When my husband walks into the studio as I am working, and says “oh boy” I know I am on the right track ! It’s hard to express how I feel working with all this marine debris plastic. I have a relationship with it that has changed my buying habits. But it goes beyond that. I pick this plastic from the same beaches where I am watching “suction” feeding gray whales scoop up sand looking for food. The same beaches where rockfish thrive on the pinnacles, where sealions birth on the rookery, where flocks of migratory birds rest. I know we’re all full of plastic. I’ve seen the water column samples, I have read the necropsy reports, I have read articles that say you and I carry about a credit card sized amount within us. It’s impossible to avoid plastic. I get it. As a consumer I can choose alternatives to plastics, and I can somewhat choose where it goes after its life cycle. Lots to think about this complex relationship between myself and plastic. Hallo #blas … böse ist, wer … der #blas ist nämlich die nachdem Tauchvorgang ausgeatmete Atemluft von #walen .. und wer hat es heute live gesehen? Richtig, ich! Wie sind heute um halb sechs aufgestanden. Macht man im Urlaub halt so. Wir mussten zur Fähre. Wir verbringen die nächsten Tagen auf #vancouverisland … und dazu muss man die Fähre nehmen. Und die fährt früh … Stimmung im@Keller, Auto beladen ab um Terminal, um da 1,5 Stunden zu warten. Macht man halt so im Urlaub. Die Fähre ist wie ein Mini-Kreuzfahrtschiff. Es gibt ein Shop, kannst was trinke und essen kaufen und es gibt eine Kinderbeschäftigung mit vielen lauten Kinder. Und das für zwei Stunden Überfahrt. Wir verbringen die meiste Zeit auf dem obersten Deck. Die Sonne scheint, der Ozean ist Glatt wie ein Babypopo und auf einmal da, schau, die Fontäne, oder wie wir alte Seeräuber sagen, der Blas! Und der Rücken dazu! Ein Wal der kurz auftaucht um Luft zu holen! Wunderbar! Da seit dem Blas habe ich nachgelesen … und danach 15 Minuten gekichert. Wir müssen die Insel durchqueren, unser Endziel heißt #ucluelet, eine Kleinstadt an der der Küste. Die Insel besteht aus Bäumen und Seen. Also besteht die Fahrt aus: Baum, Baum, See, Baum, See, Baum, Baum .. oh na guck, ein Baum… in #ucluelet holen wir als Erstes #bärenspray … quasi Pfefferspray, nur ist die Verpackung viel Größer. Ich hoffe nur der Bär gibt mir 5 Minuten Zeit die Anleitung zu lesen, bevor er angreift. An der Kasse steht auf einem Schild: wenn sie unter 40 aussehen und Tabakwaren oder Waffen kaufen fragen wir sie nach ihrem Ausweis .. mich fragt niemand in der nächsten 1,5 Stunden bin ich beleidigt. danach gehen wir kurz wandern … und na schau Baum, Baum, Baum, Reh, Baum … warte was! Zwei Rehe … stehen da und gucken genau so blöd wie wir. Bei denen war wohl grade Baum, Baum, Mensch, Baum … und die schauen. Wie schauen zurück. Ich ziehe mein Handy … und denke dabei, wie witzig es wäre, wenn die das auch machen würden … aber nö, die starren nur und kauen, seelenruhig. Deren Glück, dass ich kein Jäger bin. Wenn es so weitergeht, wird das was mit dem Bären. Bislang Robbe, Reh und Wal … läuft, gleich habe ich BINGO…
Yesterday we visited Ucluelet on Vancouver Island and came across a small store that sells a variety of natural food as well as books. They sell both new and used books (last picture are used books), which seems to be a regular occurrence in Canada (at least in British Columbia so far). Such a cute place!
