Nach dem Studium in Würzburg setzte er sein Studium an der Hochschule für Musik bei Rainer Böhm fort und schloss mit dem Master-Abschluss ab. Während des Lockdowns der Corona-Pandemie fand Sorgenfrei genug Zeit um zu schreiben und wurde von Böhm begleitet. Für sein Quartett konnte Sorgenfrei neben seinem ehemaligen Professor Rainer Böhm am Klavier noch die beiden wunderbaren und eigenständigen Musiker Wanja Slavin am Saxofon und Matthias Akeo Nowak mit seinem vollen und dunklen Ton am Bass gewinnen, allesamt sind deutlich älter als der Leader. Die schönen, vielfarbenen und harmonisch reizvollen Kompositionen auf seinem Debutalbum von Sorgenfrei stammen von ihm, ein Stück hat Böhm beigetragen. Sorgenfrei sagte: „Ich habe vor zwei Jahren begonnen, Stücke zu schreiben. Und als ich wusste, wie sich die Besetzung formatierte, habe ich nach und nach konkret für diesen Sound komponiert.“ Seine stimmungsvolle Musik besticht durch sorgfältige harmonische Melodien mit weiträumig akzentuierten musikalischen Exkursionen mit überraschenden Wendungen, die zwischen notierten und frei improvisierten Momenten souverän changiert. Sorgenfrei besticht durch sein filigranes, ziseliertes und feinnerviges Spiel ohne in Ausschweifungen zu verfallen. Er steuert sein Ensemble mit einem steten Drive und schafft Raum für seine Mitmusiker. Slavin spielt sein Saxofon vibrierend und ungemein lebendig und Böhm agiert am Klavier farbenreich, fließend und groovend. Ihre bestechende Energie steht in einem schönen Gleichgewicht und das Interplay des Quartetts ist dicht, organisch und hellwach. Fazit: Das lebendige Quartett von Jonas Sorgenfrei entwickelt auf ihrem ausgesprochen gelungenen und ausgereiften Debutalbum eine dynamische und unbändige Energie, die mit ihren sorgsam herausgearbeiteten und zuweilen melancholischen Melodien eine herbe Schönheit, innerer Ruhe und Kraft ausstrahlt die begeistert.
