Located on the site of three former hotels, the Dixie Highway Hotel, also called the Plantation House Hotel in later years, was designed by prominent South Carolina architect George Lafaye and opened in December 1920. . From 1937-1947, then state senator and future U. S. Senator Strom Thurmond owned and operated the hotel! . In 1960, W. W. Moms purchased the building and renamed it the Plantation House Hotel and enlarged the building through a rear addition, which rented rooms to retired veterans. . Ran into this sweet old theater marquee in downtown Rockford Illinois. Had to stop. Not the original marquee. Building is more of an art moderne design and in old pictures the sign did as well. This marquee came later. Originally opened in 1938. I like the asymmetry of the building too. Been closed for the past 20-ish years. The old mall at Dirksen and Stevenson is getting a facelift I think. Some of the old overhangs are being ripped out. I kind of enjoy the dated look of it. Like 70s brutalist merging into 80s postmodern. This hourglass thing is the centerpiece. It’s called Capital City Shopping Center. From an aerial shot I saw from 1974, it didn’t look like this so this was probably from a facelift. I’m thinking it could be mid/late 80s maybe even early 90s (at the latest) but I really don’t know. All I know is that is mostly empty but we bought a mattress from a close out furniture place that was originally a Zayre (a discount store like Kmart or Venture).
