Happy Friday! I’m so excited to be part of the cover reveal for Lonely Places by Kate Anderson! Thanks to @FluxBooks for the opportunity! This YA novel will release on October 29th, 2024. The cover was illustrated by Kelsey Oseid and cover design/layout by Kate Liestman. Q: What was the last book you read that featured hauntings? Synopsis: After a traumatic experience steals her younger sister Guthrie’s voice, sixteen-year-old Chase and her family move to an isolated fire lookout in Pando, a grove of Aspen tree clones connected by a massive underground root system. The lookout is supposed to give the family stability after years spent traveling the country in a converted school bus, but all Chase wants is to go back to the hometown they fled eight years ago. When Chase gets a job at a nearby summer camp, she learns that something happened at the lookout, something no one wants to talk about. Pando is a place where odd things happen. Worse? Pando is changing Guthrie, and Chase doesn’t know how to stop it or even if she should. Despite her resolve to protect Guthrie, Chase becomes increasingly distracted by Wilder, the lifeguard at camp who offers her a taste of normalcy and a new perspective on her skoolie family. But more time with Wilder means less time with Guthrie, and the mysterious force in the forest draws Guthrie deeper into its darkness—until she’s nowhere to be found. Chase must face her own childhood trauma and find her way into a strange and sinister world to rescue her sister before Guthrie is lost to the lonely places forever.  ID: Lonely Places (edited in) stands on a piece of beach driftwood. In the background is a rocky beach with tall pine trees and the ocean off to the left. A fog bank has crept in over the top third of the photo. End ID. #LonelyPlaces #KateAnderson #FluxBooks #YAFiction #BooksOutside #OutdoorBookstagram #CoverReveal

The cover of LONELY PLACES by @kateanderwrites has been revealed and it is ✨glorious✨! I am so genuinely obsessed with this cover design and all the little details that tie into the story! LONELY PLACES is an eerie, emotional story that explores trauma, familial bonds, and new love. It has Kate’s signature writing style, which is equal parts gorgeous and gruesome! Don’t miss it when it comes out on October 29th! Summary: After a traumatic experience steals her younger sister Guthrie’s voice, sixteen-year-old Chase and her family move to an isolated fire lookout in Pando, a grove of Aspen tree clones connected by a massive underground root system. The lookout is supposed to give the family stability after years spent traveling the country in a converted school bus, but all Chase wants is to go back to the hometown they fled eight years ago. When Chase gets a job at a nearby summer camp, she learns that something happened at the lookout, something no one wants to talk about. Chase isn’t entirely surprised: Pando is a place where odd things happen, like birds singing on a loop or bones sprouting out of the ground like wildflowers. °Cover Reveal° I am thrilled to share the cover of Lonely Places by @kateanderwrites This is releasing on 29th Oct. What a stunning cover! I love it. Kudos to: Illustrator: @kelzuki Designer: Kate Leistman Author’s note on the cover: I had a very clear vision of what I wanted for the cover of Lonely Places from the very beginning, and I was thrilled with how the illustrator Kelsey Oseid brought the aspen grove setting of Pando to life. The design team did such a fabulous job creating the title treatment, which is what I think really sets this cover apart. There's more to it than what you first see--secrets hidden in the trees, just like in Pando--and I can't wait to reveal the rest of the illustration later on! Chase isn’t entirely surprised: Pando is a place where odd things happen, like birds singing on a loop or bones sprouting out of the ground like wildflowers. QOTD : What book cover has intricate detailing that you love? Or have you heard about any place where strange things happe

Tolleymore Road Turnoff Black and white edits layered with textures in Photoshop, using differing opacity and blending modes, to emphasise the connection between past and present in this small landscape. Textures made from photos I took in Tasmania: Melancholy, Harsh, Constructed, and God’s Acre. A stand of old trees overshadowing a quiet road bend on Table Cape, in northwest Tasmania. I saw many of these trees during our road trip. I don’t know what it is - one of the fast-growing introduced conifers that were preferred for windbreaks. Many have overgrown their intended places and cast dense shadow that stops undergrowth. Some oddly mishappen giants in the landscape have begun to die back. Others have been removed, leaving huge stumps surrounded by bare land as the only evidence. Because of their size it would be an expensive and difficult undertaking to remove and replace them with more appropriate indigenous plantings. #tasmania #roadtrip #roadscape #ontheroad #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

Clouds Over Mount Roland Heading south from Sheffield, the clouds seemed to touch Mount Roland, the tall conglomerate rock monolith on the northern end of the Great Western Tiers. Originally it was named Rolland’s Repulse, after Captain John Rolland, the first official land explorer of Tasmania’s northwest, who traversed the surrounding country looking for good grazing land. Unfortunately, the original First Nations name for Mount Roland is unknown. Black and white edits layered with fine art digital textures made from photos I took in Tasmania: Chiselled, Peach-Bloom, Crystalline Vibrance, and Eau de Nile. Chiselled: made from photos of cliff walls above the Tayatea Bridge in Takayna / Tarkine to make a dark rough-hewn texture. Crystalline Vibrance: a colour saturated version of Crystalline, made from photos of peeling painted and papered walls at Highfield, layered with water and lichen-covered rocks from nearby Pinmatik / Rocky Cape, and patterned glass at Waddamana hydro-electric power station. #tasmania #roadtrip #roadscape #ontheroad #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

Road to Pinmatik / Rocky Cape Black and white edits, layered in Photoshop with textures made from photos I took in Tasmania, to emphasise the timelessness of this place, accessed by unsealed road, winding around low rocky hills through low scrub and coastal heath. Textures: Deadwood, Shedding, Crystalline Vibrance, God’s Acre, and Eau de Nile. Signs of First Nations habitation remain in protected middens and caves, and according to the park’s website, the Tasmanian Aboriginal community maintains strong cultural and spiritual connections to the place and is involved in its management. There was infrastructure for visitors, but no-one was near the Lighthouse, North Cave Track, or South Cave when we visited. Paths to the viewing platforms were tightly enclosed in vegetation. The place felt secluded although it’s not far from a small settlement and boat ramp between the towns of Wynyard and Stanleyin northwest Tasmania. #tasmania #roadtrip #roadscape #ontheroad #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

Nowhere Else A quiet road through farm country in Nowhere Else, one of several evocatively named rural localities, including Paradise and Promised Land, in northwest Tasmania. Black and white edits layered with textures made from photos I took in Tasmania: God’s Acre, Gore, Façade, Constructed, Royal, Eau de Nile, to emphasise the timeless still quality of the this small landscape, which includes several of my favourite elements: utility poles alongside a road cresting a hill, fluffy clouds beyond, fenceposts against the sky, and patches of weed flowers unsuppressed in the mown embankment. #tasmania #roadtrip #roadscape #ontheroad #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

© 2024 | M. R. Grey Yellow Dog Village, nestled in Worthington, PA, once echoed with the bustling energy of Pittsburgh Limestone Company workers. However, time has cast it into a state of desolation. Gradually declining due to the closure of the mines the last remaining residents were forced to leave due to the discovery of E. Coli contaminating the drinking water. The name “Yellow Dog” bears a weighty legacy, stemming from the residents’ reluctance to challenge the company and unionize. They traded their voices for housing and higher wages while submitting to any of the company’s demands earning them the moniker of cowardice. Today, Yellow Dog Village stands as a haunting testament to a bygone era. Visitors are granted access for a nominal fee and a signed waiver relinquishing their right to legal recourse in the event of injury. . . . . #documentinglife #photojournal #everydaylife #peopleimeet #ourstory #myphotojournal #magnumphotos #eyeshotmag #documentaryphotography #thephotosector #independentphoto #tdmmag #canonstories #canoncollective #lensculturediscovery #thepictoriallist #thefcdiary #abandonedhouse #abandonedplace #abandonedexcellence #abandonedearth #ghosttowns #ghosttownsofamerica #forgottenplaces #urbanexplore #lonelyplaces #miningtown #timepasses #naturereclaims

Toward the Coast on Woolnorth Road Black and white edits layered with textures made from photos I took in Tasmania, including Highfield because of its connection to Woolnorth / Temdudheker. Textures: Lino Cut, Gore, Pensive, Chenille Divided, Chiselled, Water Garden, and Eucalypt. Woolnorth Tours provide access to the privately-owned land on Tasmania’s northwest coast, including Kennaook / Cape Grim. On the tour we heard about the windfarm, CSIRO’s climate and pollution monitoring station, Woolnorth’s convict-built homestead compound, historic and current farm operations, Peerapper First Nations use of land and sea, and the 1828 massacre. As we approached the coast, I noticed the way the lines of the gravel road, the fences, and gently undulating land converged in the depression where the road bent; the contrast between closely cropped paddocks and scrub at the land’s edge; the open water and islands beyond. #tasmania #roadtrip #roadscape #ontheroad #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

Along Wilmot Road Black and white edits layered with textures made from photos I took in Tasmania: Eau de Nile, Rosie, Lino Cut, and Chiselled, to emphasise the frugality and perseverance of farm life. This small rural landscape, with precise furrows and empty sky, includes many of my favourite things: a patched road that disappears tantalizingly over a hill, utility poles and fence alongside, and the steep embankment covered in escaped crop flowers (weeds). Rich soils and abundant water have supported agricultural enterprises in Tasmania since colonial times, but the tumbledown sheds and farmhouses I love to photograph are signs that rural communities are struggling to survive economically. I’ve seen this in other parts of Australia as well, and I reflect on how fragile our agriculture and food supply is - to market whims and fluctuations, unsustainable farming practices, and changing climate. #tasmania #roadtrip #roadscape #ontheroad #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #australianrural #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

Great Bay Road Bruny Island Black and white edits layered in Photoshop with textures made from photos I took in Tasmania to emphasise the early morning light. Textures: Water Garden, Melancholy, Harsh, and Constructed. Bruny Island is home to the Nuenonne people, the original owners. A large community of people who identify as Aboriginal still live on the island. In Great Bay, in 1829, George Robinson, Chief Protector of Aborigines, set up a camp for Nuenonne survivors of the frontier wars, including Truganini the daughter of Mugana, the chief. The following year, the settlement was moved to Flinders Island, where most of the inhabitants died of introduced diseases. Since 1820, Bruny Island has been used for forestry, farming, tin and coal mining, oil drilling, whaling, quarantine stations, and tourism. It is a vital habitat for all 12 of Tasmania’s endemic bird species https://nre.tas.gov.au/wildlife-management/fauna-of-tasmania/birds/endemic-birds #tasmania #roadtrip #roadscape #ontheroad #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #rurallandscape #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

Backroad Black and white edits layered with fine art digital textures made from photos I took in Tasmania: Water Garden, Deadwood, Preserved, Harsh, Eau de Nile, and Hormosira Banksii. Somewhere near Stanley in Tasmania’s northwest, a backroad curves from shadow into light around the bend. Utility poles mark out the roadway into the distance. Wispy clouds catch my eye – they merge to form a blanket over the horizon. When I reviewed my photos from this road trip, I realised that this type of utility pole is not as ubiquitous as I believed. They don’t seem to be as common in cities or towns anymore. They must have been replaced with more modern delivery systems. These poles seem more often in rural areas. It occurred to me that one day these poles could disappear, like household rooftop TV antenna, or the neighbourhood building I can’t recall when I pass a new demolition site. Unexpectedly, I felt nostalgic about these poles. #tasmania #roadtrip #roadscape #ontheroad #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australiangothic #australianlandscape #ruralaustralia #nostalgia #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

Lino Cut Cliff walls above the Tayatea Bridge in Takayna / Tarkine, layered in Adobe Photoshop using differing blending modes and opacity levels to make a colourful texture. The colours created during processing reminded me of old linoleum. The lines and angles of the broken cliff face reminded me of the tool marks made when carving linoleum for printmaking. Linoleum is made from solidified linseed oil, pine resin, corkdust, sawdust, and mineral fillers such as calcium carbonate, most commonly on a burlap or canvas backing, as it has been since the 19th Century. The Tayatea Bridge crosses the Arthur River / Tunganrick, in the largely unprotected Takayna / Tarkine wilderness of the Tasmania’s northwest, which contains 60 species of rare and endangered flora and fauna, and economically important wood and minerals. #tasmania #roadtrip #lonelyplaces #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobephotoshop #fineartdigitaltexture #texture #abstractart #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography
