Our harvest has come to a screaming halt..it's time to treat the hives for Varroa Destuctor! If we don't treat twice a year, we lose our hives, the horrid mite will decimate the bees. 💨🦀VARROA VAPE🦀💨 What have you been doing today beekeeper Bev? Oxalic sublimation. Weather watching I vaped some of mine & beekeeper Jane’s hives last Sunday. Day 5 today I went back to check the varroa drop. Reassurance they are still alive you can see the crumble from where they’ve uncapped their stores. You can also see where the bees are clustered from the drop AND see the drop of phoretic varroa mites. Some concerns to keep an eye on. Buzzingham stores when they were closed up for winter were stacked on the left of the hive & the cluster is on the right. There were some stores there amongst the brood they went into winter with. For my non beek friends - Bees are quite frugal & will only uncap the stores if they really need it. My concern is they’ve eaten the main treasury & are now on the leftovers. If they haven’t uncapped the main treasury they may not in this cold snap make it back across to the other side & will be at risk of isolation starvation. They do have a bag of fondant on the crown board so do have food above where they are. Jane’s board suggests the cluster is much smaller with quite a varroa drop for the size. Gave them another vape today & will check the drop on Wednesday, a further 5 days. Treating in the cold weather should guarantee that there’s no brood for the varroa to feed off & hide & multiply under the sealed brood & ultimately give the girls a good strong hold to survive the rest of winter & come into spring strong. Can see a little wet in my board. I angled the hive so any condensation went to one side. Will change this angle on reflection I think I’ll change the angle on Wednesday just in case there’s too much near the treasury & they won’t cluster there. So much unknown in the hive this time of the year, one can only hypothesize from other observations. Pero sin duda la más frecuente es la varroa que afecta a todas las colmenas sin excepción causando estragos. . Es un ácaro (como una mini-garrapata) que se adhiere a su cuerpo y se alimenta de ellas, ya desde antes de nacer (se reproduce en la celda de cría), acabando con su salud; consume sus reservas corporales, las debilita, transmite virus y les impide desarrollar su trabajo y funciones. Tanto es así que las colmenas no pueden sobrevivir sin tratamiento y el apicultor está obligado a tratar frente a este parásito una vez al año, lo que en muchos casos está siendo insuficiente. . Lo que veis en la foto es un papel impregnado en vaselina y colocado en el fondo sanitario (en el suelo) de una colmena el día en el que le coloqué el tratamiento. Todos los puntitos granates (algunos incluso apelotonados) son ácaros varroa que caen por efecto del tratamiento y quedan pegados en la vaselina. . Esto es sólo 24 horas después de colocar el tratamiento. Seguirán cayendo a buen ritmo durante el tiempo (semanas) que permanece en la colmena. . Elk jaar worden onze bijen tussen Kerstmis en Nieuwjaar (en ook de paar dagen erna) behandeld tegen de Varroamijt. Dit doen we door een oxaalzuuroplossing over de bijentros te druppelen. Dit organische zuur, dat van nature ook in het bijennest voorkomt (in een lagere concentratie weliswaar) zorgt ervoor dat de mijten afsterven. Op deze manier trachten we de Varroapopulatie in toom te houden zodat de nieuwe larfjes in optimale omstandigheden kunnen groeien en verpoppen tot de nieuwe werksterbijen voor de komende lente! 🐝🐝🐝 (Waarom de handdoek rond de druppelfles? Eine der besten Neuentdeckungen für uns in 2023: Königinnen käfigen mit dem Scalvinikäfig 24 Tage vor der Honigernte im Sommer, direkt im Anschluss einmalige Träufelung mit Varromed. Zwar muss man einmal alle Königinnen einfangen (hat aber dann auch die Chance, alle zu markieren), aber ansonsten eine super Methode, um die Völker im Sommer varroafrei zu bekommen und gleichzeitig braune Altwaben auszutauschen. Wir hatten bei 19 gekäfigten Königinnen keinerlei Verluste und auch keine späteren Umweiselungen. Die Damen haben munter weitergelegt in ihrem kleinen Knast und direkt Gas gegeben, als sie wieder befreit wurden. It’s that time of year, when our bees are broodless (they have no larvae or brood -baby bees ready to hatch) we treat them for varroa mite, we choose to use apibioxal, it is oxalic acid, which is a natural acid. The varroa mite is a parasite that can live off the bees, but it can overrun a hive with can lead to disease in the hive. BESTANDSBUCH Heute habe ich mich nochmal schnell zum Jahresende an das Bestandsbuch für die Varroabehandlung gewagt. Imker sind seit 2022 verpflichtet alle Behandlungen gegen die Varroamilbe und die verwendeten Mittel genau zu dokumentieren. Dafür reicht ein einfacher Zettel, wie ich ihn mir von @bienenundnatur besorgt habe 📝. Das Veterinäramt hat bei einer Kontrolle das Recht sich das Bestandsbuch zeigen zu lassen und ein Fehlen der Dokumentation kann mit Bußgeldern geahndet werden 😬💶. Auch das gehört zur Imkerei - Bürokratie. Also schnell alles dokumentieren. Einige Völker haben es leider nicht geschafft. Bei der Winterbehandlung musste ich feststellen, dass einige Bienenstöcke leer sind. Schuld hat der zu hohe Varroadruck im Herbst. Aufgrund der warmen Witterung und blühender Begrünungen wurden die Bienen lange motiviert zu brüten, damit hat sich die Varroa auch weitervermehren können. Man sieht, die phoretischen Varroen stecken oft zwischen den Hinterleibssegmenten auf der Bauchseite. Leider liegt die Ausfallsquote zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt schon deutlich über den Winterverlusten im vorigen Winter!! Bitter, da heißt es abwarten und hoffen. Wie sieht es bei euren Bienen aus? [🇦🇹|🇩🇪👇🏽]Today was the perfect day for the winter treatment against the varroa mite. +7°C, so the bees are neither flying nor sitting too tightly in the winter cluster; neither storm nor rain; it has been cold long enough for them to have no more brood, but at the same time they are not yet brooding (brood will not start until after the winter solstice on December 21 at the earliest). No sooner said than done! I vaporize oxalic acid - the bees tolerate it well, but not the mites. I need about 40 seconds per colony once the device is up to operating temperature. Of course, I protect myself with a suitable breathing mask. In about a week or so, I then insert the Varroa trays to check whether any dead Varroa are still falling down and whether I need to treat them (which I am not assuming at the moment). Dezember). Gesagt, getan! Ich verdampfe Oxalsäure - das vertragen die Bienen gut, die Milben jedoch nicht. Pro Volk brauche ich etwa 40 Sekunden, sobald das Gerät einmal auf Betriebstemperatur ist. Mich selbst schütze ich dabei natürlich mit einer passenden Atemmaske. In etwa einer Woche oder so, lege ich dann die Varroatassen ein, um zu kontrollieren, ob noch tote Varroen hinunter fallen und ich gegebenenfalls nachbehandeln muss (wovon ich jetzt aber einmal nicht ausgehe). We've been working on getting the girls ready for winter this weekend ahead of the drops in temps starting tonight. They've got hopefully enough honey to last them through the winter and we swapped out a few frames that were basically empty for frames full of honey that we held back from Extraction season in the freezer. In case that isn't enough we also added a layer of sugar as emergency food for them. We also added quilt boxes to the tops of the hives to help with condensation and moisture in the hives as well as add a little bit of insulation to keep them warm. Since the inside of the hives are warm compared to outside, it's super important to keep condensation under control in your hive. Condensation means moisture and if it collects on the top of your hive then rains back down on your bees, wet bees will likely equal dead bees. Hoping these quilt boxes help with this. The last thing we did was an oxalic acid treatment on them to treat for Varroa mites. Imagine a tick the size of a dinner plate on you between your shoulder blades. Like ticks, these mites can open the door to lots of health issues for your bees and sick bees are going to have a tougher time making it through the winter. Now that we've put these ladies to bed for the winter, it'll be time to focus on the upcoming holidays (and birthdays!) for now before we start on the to-do list to get ready for spring in the beeyard again. So grateful for all the things we learned this first year beekeeping and excited to get back out there again and learn more from these fascinating little bugs next year!

It was already accepted and legal in Europe, and had been for quite awhile, so we started with it and have used it in various forms ever since. I have used Apivar in winter a couple times for convenience sake. But after I heard Dr.Jennifer Berry say that mites cannot become immune to OAV anymore than we can become immune to being hit with a hammer! I continue. My winterover rates are excellent and as a hobbyist, I use what works. I treat my horses for worms. I treat my dogs for fleas. An organic way to remove varroa mites from your hive: remove drone brood. As drones need 24 days to hatch as opposed to worker bees that need 18-22, mites like to lay their eggs in cells with drone eggs so their larvae have more time to feed. ZU SCHÖN UM WAHR ZU SEIN Heute stand die Kontrolle der Bienenvölker nach der ersten Varroabehandlung mit Ameisensäure an. Am Flugloch beider Völker war mächtig Betrieb. Ein gutes Zeichen 🙂. Als wir dann die Windeln beider Völker auf den Varroafall untersuchen wollten, fiel uns auf, dass eine einzige Varroamilbe auf der Windel von Volk 2 lag. Nur eine einzige Milbe 🤔. Sofort gingen die Spekulationen los: gab es kaum Varroamilben oder haben sich Ameisen darüber hergemacht? Die Ameisensäure war in beiden Völkern komplett verdampft ☠🕷. Den Völkern selbst ging es gut. Stifte, Brut in allen Stadien und aktive Bienen. Wir haben uns jetzt erstmal dafür entschieden etwas zu warten und nach einer Woche die Windel erneut zu kontrollieren, um gegebenenfalls eine zweite Behandlung zu starten 🧪💨. Connected to the battery the vaporizer will start to warm up and vape the mite treatment through the box. This treatment will attack the mites that are with the brood in the capped cells mostly.
