If she's still in the cage, just open it (directly over the frames) and let her out. Removing the queen cage is important- if you don't get it out, the bees will build comb up over and around it, and make a huge mess. Zwar muss man einmal alle Königinnen einfangen (hat aber dann auch die Chance, alle zu markieren), aber ansonsten eine super Methode, um die Völker im Sommer varroafrei zu bekommen und gleichzeitig braune Altwaben auszutauschen. It’s not even officially winter and I’m already thinking about spring! April is the month when beekeepers pick up their packages and/or “nucs” (nucleus colonies) from their local suppliers. Pictured is a package of bees. Bees are measured by weight and the most popular size is 3 lbs (approximately 10,000 bees). Packages of bees are typically made with a wood frame, top and bottom and wire screen sides. It is important for the bees to have ventilation. The wooden lid holds a tin can feeder filled with sugar syrup for the bees to eat while in transit. Within the package, there is a wood or plastic queen cage (second photo). This holds the queen safely separated from the workers while they get accustomed to her scent. There are holes plugged with corks in both ends of the queen cage. One side opens directly to the queen while the other opens to a candy plug. Once the package is installed in the hive, the worker bees will eat away at the candy plug to release the queen. ::The Queen is Out!:: Queen Freddie has been successfully freed from her cage by the adoring hive Mercury. The workers are bringing in pollen (a sure sign that baby bees are on the way), and everyone is calm and focused. In the first picture you'll see the cage that Freddie came in, along with the first cage I ever received a queen bee from back in 2010. You can see things have changed in 14 years! Kendra catching queens like a pro! 🤓🐝 The right balance of cage placement, patience, and careful closure...she got this extra queen ready for transport! To prepare for winter, we combined a small swarm with a young hive. The workers from the swarm were shook into a new super with newspaper between the box and the hive below. After 2-3 days, the bees will eat through the paper and combine with the young hive. Since the young hive already had a healthy queen, the swarm's queen was moved to a hive in NLR that wasn't producing as well. Spot the white cage tucked between the brood frames of the hive? This little cage contains a queen bee and several of her caretakers. We purchased this queen to add to a colony that was queenless. After swarming, it appeared this hive had not been successful in rearing a queen who was laying. In hopes to save the colony and prevent losses later in the season, we intervened and added a queen back into the hive. By being in the cage, the queen bee is protected from the new colony until they become adjusted to her pheromone. There is a candy plug sealing her in the cage and the bees will chew through the plug allowing her to free herself. We attempted a queen placing method we learned at a bee school by @charliebeeco. A hard lesson we learned is to make sure the cage is fully enclosed. There were more bees inside the cage than what we left with. That top corner flush with the frame wood looks to be where they got in. Some of the foundation doesnt reach all the way across, so they probably came in from behind through a hole. Shame on the beekeepers for not paying attention! We are at the point now where we are going to let them requeen themselves. If they are spicy later on, we will try again. Also, first time I ever got a bee in my suit! She came up through the zipper where my velcro wasn't completely closed. Queen Citrine has made her hive debut. Hopefully she outlasts her predecessor! Those girls were not happy with me during inspection. I pulled a very full brood frame from the happy hive and switched it out with a brood frame from the sick hive before I placed the queen in. Because of that, I decided to introduce a queen protected by a cage into the hive. In the second video you can see that the queen was accepted by the hive a few days after. In fact, the sound and behavior of the bees are totally different, they seem calmer. The result of our queen fiasco: a nuc! We're experimenting and seeing if three frames of bees and a mated queen can make it though winter. To do so, we're using our favorite method of over-wintering small hives (swipe 👉🏼). We removed the outer empty frames and replaced them with cut-to-size insulation. This will: 🔥 keep the hive warmer ⬇️ reduce the amount of energy bees have to use 🍯 make sure they can't venture far from their food 💪🏼decrease the area bees need to protect
Forget politics. We've had mystery, murder, and scandal right in our own hive! Here's how things went down after removing the emergency queen cells (read yesterday's post for more background!): 🗓️ OCT 21: After much deliberation, we decided to install a new queen. We haven't had drones for months and wanted a mated queen going into winter. 🗓️ OCT 24: Queen had not been released. Poked a hole in the wax to encourage the bees to release her. 🗓️ OCT 27: Queen had still not been released and hole in wax had been closed by bees. Poked new hole and inadvertently let out the queen. Heard piping. Queen was balled. A few moments later, saw the mated queen wandering around the frame. Success! 🎃 OCT 31: Found the queen in the hive. But wait! It's a virgin queen. Mated queen is nowhere to be found. Ah! 🗓️ NOV 1: Decided to get another mated queen. Looked through the hive to find and remove the virgin queen. Found her and... OMG she mated overnight!!! We now had two mated queens for this once queenless hive. A lot to digest there. We'll share the outcome tomorrow, but we're curious - - what would you have done?

As I was checking frame by frame I started noticing tons of capped honey, and alot of pollen which is great but I was missing 4 key things eggs, larvae, brood and....The Queen!😭😩🐝 I knew she was gone when I lifted the second frame out. My heart sunk and I thought well I'm out this year. Then I noticed 2 capped queen cells😳🙌So I closed it all up, said a little prayer 🙏and hoped for the best. A few weeks go by and I went out to see if I saw anything hopeful. Annnnnnd nothing. The cells were even gone!🤦♀️Knowing I didn't want to give up this year I searched for beekeepers that still had Queens available. I found someone and they shipped overnight🙌 sooooo the day before yesterday I got her and I went right out and installed the box into my hive. Closed it all up and now I put my faith in her and the hive that everything works out! Whewwww! 2021 has been very buzzzy as far as the beekeeping is concerned 😏 currently in a situation with a queen less hive and an extremely grumpy hive which we think has a drone queen which is not good news (beekeeper recovering from mass attack yesterday). So a couple of weeks ago Hive 1 seemed to be missing a very important lady, their queen bee. No eggs to be found, and on another hive check still no eggs and no larvae, they were building up honey stores (which means a lot of them had no brood to take care of so they make food instead) and they seemed a little more ornery then usual. There was also no sign of them trying to make a new queen, so I made the decision to order a queen for them because no babies means the hive will slowly die out. I ordered from @mannlakeltd and she arrived in this queen cage a few days later with some attendants to keep her happy. I immediately placed it in between two frames and crossed my fingers that they would accept her. It’s been five days and when I went back in I found the cage empty, which means they chewed the candy plug at the end to let her out. I’m taking this as a good sign and going to leave them be for a while. She’ll need to take a mating flight and begin egg laying, so again, fingers crossed. I’ve always liked the saying “If you ask 6 beekeepers the same question you’ll get 10 different answers.” Beekeeping is a constant learning experience and at the end of the day you have to do what you feel is best for your bees. In good news though I was able to add another super to hive 3 today. 🎉 Thanks again to everyone who comes out on Saturday mornings to the Meyer Oak Grove Farmers Market to buy my products, and to friends and family for buying them as well. The queen cage. Both ends will have corks but only 1 of the 2 will have a sugar seal (candy/fondant). Why the seal? 2 reasons: 1)Feeding the queen and her attendants during travel. 2) As a medium to introduce and release the queen to the colony (the workers chew at the seal to get to her). There’s a whole finesse to introducing a new queen to a colony, but in short, you keep her in this cage for 3-5 days so the hive gets accustomed to her pheromones. Surprise surprise, though. Not all queens are accepted even after the waiting period. Queen take 2. One of the backyard hives has been queenless for 2 months. I tried a few times to get them to make their own but they failed to do so. I also tried introducing a mated queen last month and they apparently didn’t accept her. My neighbor had an extra one he offered to me so decided to try again though I had my doubts. I checked on them the other day and she was found walking around on the frames which is a very good sign that they like her and will keep her. One of the many packages we installed last week is very obviously queen right! Packages of bees are simply ventilated boxes containing 3 lbs of honey bees and a mated queen, isolated in a cage inside the box. There are three reasons a queen is caged in a package: 1. She is prevented from laying eggs, as she has nowhere to lay them in an otherwise empty box. 2. Her worker bees are able to acclimate to her pheromones before she roams freely—even bees have an introduction etiquette! 3. The cage protects the queen during transit.
