A very special treat this wine Wednesday with two bottles from @lagaragista, a farm and winery located in Vermont, USA. Winemakers Deirdre Heekin and Caleb Barber grow alpine wine, as well as ciders and co fermentations, alongside other vegetables, fruits and flowers to serve themselves and their wine bar/ bottle shop. Guided by regenerative, permaculture, and biodynamic practises they plant cold hardy hybrid grape vines, and cross pollinations between European and indigenous grapes that grow well in the northeastern USA. I had the pleasure of trying both the Ci Confonde white and the La Crescent Vine Jancu recently @ducksoupsoho The Ci Confonde (meaning it confuses or confounds us in Italian), is a pét-nat with delicate bubbles and a beautiful aroma of summer meadows with field flowers, ripe pears and a hint of honey. This follows through to the palette with a hint of apricot and something more savoury to create a really lovely wine. The La Crescent Vine Jancu is a skin contact wine that pays homage to a very special vineyard on Mount Etna named Vinujancu and also refers to an old style white wine that was always fermented on skins. Made from a hybrid La Crescent grape this orange wine has a beautiful wildness about it, with hints of mint and clove complementing the strawberry, plum and citrus peel undertones. A real treat! Thanks @dwregg for introducing me to these delicious wines and fascinating producer. In anticipation of the Champlain Islands Farmers Market Summer season starting May 18th, we will be sharing spotlights of our amazing vendors! Our first featured vendor is Snow Farm Vineyard and Fox Hill Maple @snowfarmwine They have had a wonderful spring at the vineyard as pruning finishes up in the next couple of weeks. They had an absolute blast hosting Eclipse celebrations throughout the weekend of April 6,7 & 8. The taps are all pulled in the sugarbush and they are cleaning up from a wonderful sugaring season. The Vineyard tasting room and farm store are open through April Fridays 12-5, Saturdays and Sundays 11-5. This is not an easy post to write- so we’ll be brief and direct. . We opened this beautiful little space in July of 2022 and we shall close it in April of 2024. . A 90% loss to frost in 2023, a slow crappy snowless winter- and we are facing a long year of unknown business and very little of our wine to get us through. . @laudro_ poured her heart into decorating this cozy Hygge-filled space. @bobwhobuildsthings put in the stunning bar and benches. We will miss being here. . YET, with every closed door, another opens and we are (insanely and blindly optimistically) planting more vines everywhere we can, collaborating on new projects with amazing people (hey @goldendogfarmvt !!) and wildly, chaotically dancing into the future. . He studied piano performance and music theory at the Crane School of Music, and composing and arranging at Berklee College of Music, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2006. He moved to Vermont in 2016 after periods of living in Boston and Chicago. Jamie Masefield & Doug Perkins: Listening Room Session, this Friday night in the loft. Doors at 7pm, Show begins at 7:30pm, 2 sets of music. About 30 tickets still available before it’s sold out. Jamie Masefield followed in his grandfather’s footsteps, (who played bass for Tommy Dorsey) as a fellow groovemaster, but Jamie used the tenor banjo instead. He plied these skills and chord-voicings to found and lead the Jazz Mandolin Project which toured the US, while recording six albums, including one released by Blue Note Records. He played with such luminaries as Frank Vignola and Peter Apfelbaum in his group. Spanning the length and breadth of Vermont, Doug Perkins’ musical efforts have ranged from backing the Green Mountain Cloggers to playing Hillbilly jazz at Mead Chapel with Vassar Clements to playing a half-dozen of JS Bach’s sonatas for solo violin at the statehouse in Montpelier (on guitar of course.)
