We are delighted to welcome new vendors Isle La Motte Vineyard to the Wednesday Market this season! @isle_lamotte_vineyard Vermont's Isle La Motte Vineyard is in the northern part of the Champlain Island chain at 85 Shrine Road in Isle La Motte. Just under two acres of vines, with charming gardens and landscaping, it is a destination location for wine enthusiasts. They sell Marquette red and rosé wines, as well as standalone and blended white wines with La Crescent and Frontenac blanc grapes. These grapes are engineered for these northern climes. When I saw that Kendra Knapik from Ellison Estate Vineyard in VT was going to be at RAW, the natural wine fair in Bushwick yesterday, I reached out to her to tell her Id stop by to say hello. Then this tv appearance gig in Philly yesterday morning came up, but I was like, I can do both...because I can, and I did. I was great to catch up a bit and taste her wines. I love what she and her husband Rob not only envisioned but are accomplishing on a blessed piece of land on Grand Isle, with their flocks of young kids and sheep in the mix too. If you wonder what delicious things can be made from hybrid grapes, all you had to do was stop by the table she was at and taste through her portfolio (with great labels) and the offerings of her VT tablemates, Deirdre Heekin of @lagaragista and Camilla Carrillo of @_la_montanuela, to understand. Happily. I told Kendra I was happy to see her...and meant it. Her vision and energy are happy things to see. #thecompasscbf 2023 stop number 122 with Hillis’ Sugarbush Farm & Vineyard. . On our return trip from Quebec we decided to drive through the Champlain Islands and sure enough there were a few wineries and breweries along our route. We decided on Hillis’ Sugarbush Farm & Vineyard and fortunately Jim and Judy were available even though the winery was closed. The winery was established in 1987 with the main farm located near Lake Champlain in Colchester and a smaller vineyard (Butler Island Vineyard) on Butler Island -- located in the inland sea of northern Lake Champlain. They grow LaCrescent, Swenson White, Marquette, Vidal Blanc, Marchel Foch, and Traminette and the vineyards proximity to Lake Champlain extends the growing season. . Jim first started making wine as a child helping his father make Dandelion wine. Then distilling spirits and producing maple syrup. In fact Hillis’ Sugarbush Farm processes both wine and maple syrup making the establishment the only tasting room that is also a sugarhouse. The sap flows from the large collection tank to the evaporator where the sap is boiled and thus thickened through evaporation. . Since we still had eight hours of driving ahead of us I purchased a bottle of their Marquette Reserve ($25) knowing that this is the premier red wine out of Vermont. Great day of viticulture course from @uvmpss with Terry Bradshaw included a tour of @ellisonestatevineyard so finished the day with their Little Experiment number 1 (a Vermont Louise Swenson wine) paired nicely with @stonypondfarm Missing Link cheese and @montiverdivt La coppa salumi- had time to work on checking out some soil profiles and testing water infiltration/percolation for my future vineyard site - southern sloping field (7% average grade) mix of Farmington-Stockbridge rocky loams and Stockbridge and Nellie stony loams - after a couple days of extreme rain events soil is already fairly saturated- plus a bonus, some of the barn swallows have clutches - #vermontwine #vtwine

A visit to @foambrewers in #BurlingtonVT is an exploration in taste and fermentation. Beer nerds flock to the Lake Street taproom (with an expansive view of Lake Champlain) for an ever-changing roster of monster IPAs, wet-hopped brews, fruit-packed sours, and mixed-culture, barrel-aged beers from House of Fermentology, many containing ingredients grown by nearby farmers...it's an artful process that creates distinctive and original American wild ales. Foam's own tiny vineyard produces wine under the label Natural Hack. "Beautiful Inside My Mind" is a raw, sparkling red wine fermented spontaneously featuring 100% Marquette, farmed and fermented in Vermont. "A Visit To Me" is their single varietal sparkling wine made with only organic wild Maine blueberries. In the fall of 2021, wild organic blueberries from Burke Hill Farm were crushed and fermented in oak with house mixed culture. Following a long cold fermentation the berries were pressed and the wine was barreled up in fresh toasted oak to age for the next 6-months. The latest venture is Taunik, transcendent cannabis elixirs... all sparkling and sweetened with honey, including "Fine Frequency" yerba mate with lemon; "Call of Peaks" green tea, lime and peppermint; and pretty pink "Melody Maker" with black tea and sumac. Grapes have been grown in New Mexico since before the United States was formed. Indeed, New Mexico has a very long history of grape growing with the first vines being planted by Spanish Missionaries in the 1600s for use in Catholic ceremonies. Jesuit priests brought grapes to the state from Italy in the 1800s. In 1943, the Rio Grande flooded many of the state's already-struggling vineyards, essentially forcing New Mexican winemaking into dormancy for decades to come. The Gruet family, looking to expand operations beyond their holdings in Champagne, discovered that New Mexico was a remarkably good substitute. Domaine Saint Vincent Method Champenoise is their entry-level bottling that's surprisingly close to the real deal. Displaying a fine mousse and bright fruit notes, the Domaine Saint-Vincent Brut is balanced by a subtle nutty, yeasty note. Sorry for the silence over here friends! I wish I could say we were taking a post harvest rest, but it’s been more like a post harvest whirlwind. The last 2 weeks especially have been nonstop, but also incredibly inspiring and a really important 2 weeks for VT wine. The inspiration started with @vitinord, an international cold climate grape conference that we hosted in Burlington. 2.5 years of planning was worth it! Winegrowers from all around the globe congregated to discuss emerging wine regions, global warming, & all things cold climate grape & wine related! I had the opportunity to sit on a panel with @iapetuswine & @kalchewineco with @lagaragista at the helm, to talk about natural wine and hybrids. I think everyone left full, connected, & energized. A couple days later, we packed up more wine to pour for one of our favorite annual events, Cosmic Wines put on by @dedaluswine @hulalakeside. This event is always a party! It was so great to connect with our VT wine community again, many familiar faces & new customers, & winemakers & distributors from around the globe @cantinafurlani @josepastorselections! The following day, we headed to the first Vermont Wine Festival put on by @schmetterlingwineshop at the beautiful Holley Hall in Bristol. This well planned more intimate event gave us the opportunity to once again network with local and regional producers. There were 3 fantastic panels on mentorship, climate change, & I loved speaking to community with @kalchewineco & @unfinedunfiltered. Yesterday, I headed down to New Hampshire to speak with @nokvino on natural wines and their future in our emerging wine region at the New England Fruit and Vegetable conference. Concurrently, Rob, @lsquared29 & Tom heroically got the rest of our bird netting up before the storm! (Yes, it was still out thanks to a flat loaded tractor tire that didn’t get fixed until right before VitiNord 🤣)… It’s been so nonstop, I failed to document much by way of 📸the last 2 weeks 🤦🏼‍♀️, but I dug up a handful, & the first photo is complements of @lagaragista at @ellisonestatevineyard when we welcomed over 130 people to our vineyard for the first part of the @vitinord tour!

Vin Santo is a style of Italian dessert wine. Although the style of making wine from dried grapes has been around almost as long as wine has been made, there are many theories on how the particular name Vin Santo or "holy wine" came to be associated with this style of wine in Italy. The most likely origin was wine's historic use in the Catholic Mass, where sweet wine was often preferred. Another claim is that when the island of Santorini was ruled by Venice, packages sent from the island were labelled "Santo" to denote their origin, while their contents were labelled "Vin"; thus, the term "Vin Santo" was born. Our new Vin Santo, from Cantine Guidi 1929 in Tuscany, would beautifully adorn any Christmas table this year. It has notes of dried apricot and figs with caramel, hazelnut and almond nuances. It is perfectly sweet and is well-balanced on the palate with acidity (which holds well while drinking). Look for an aftertaste of honey and barley candy. This is to be enjoyed with aged cheeses, dry pastries, or with fresh cream gelato. It can be enjoyed while smoking a cigar or during a moment of meditation while watching the snow fall.
