Took my youngest out today for a dig. It's done nothing but rain here for days so the first glimpse of blue and I was itching to get him out in the fresh air. We followed a stream upto an old dump finding lots in and around the water then had a little dig once we reached the dump. He wanted to take home everything he found and even dug out his first marble which is his fav and he wished school was open so he could "show and tell" it to all his friends ♡ On my previous post I explained most of my finds were accidental, so inspired by everyone on here, this was the first time we went out prepared and intent on digging. Other than the marble we didn't find a single complete thing but every piece and object was real life treasure to him. Bottle stoppers! Not sure why but I love finding these. The blue one is a Hoe's Sauce stopper and is my fav it's so vibrant! A little research and I found it's a Manchester company which makes it local to us! The white one is a Garton sauce stopper. These days you will know it as HP sauce. I did a little digging online and rumours are Garton got his original recipe from Hoe's Sauce! I love that there's a connection between my finds. Even though it is still known as Gartons HP he didn't actually make any money from it as he was in debt and had to sell not long after registering the name. Some may say karma? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤔 Both could be around 100 years old and found when exploring an old victorian tip / dump. The rougher looking incomplete stopper was found on the road right outside my house. My son dug this out from what we believe to be an old tip around 5 years ago. It's been sat in a cupboard full of mud and not been looked at since until I found it today & cleaned it up. It's J&G Meakin SOL apparantly, though I can't find this pattern anywhere! A google search of the stamp dates it between 1912-1968. Looks 60s to me but the pattern has worn off in places. Is it possible it was a hand painted addition on a plain mug? I have no idea about pottery and a complete amatuer but I am curious. It's very large & has a sort of square handle. I love that it's still in tact and it now has pride of place on my shelves. We were doing our bit by helping to clean up the local area today by teaming up with @garvaldbakers @garvaldtoolsworkshop @garvaldgorgiekitchen and some volunteers from the McDonald's down on Gorgie road. First saw this way out in the mud & thinking it was plastic, ignored it. Too much effort to get to it, even wearing the Mudders. Next visit, I was way out on the mud & decided to investigate. Realised it wasn't a plastic bucket or pot but a big stoneware pot. It looked v manky but intact so into the finds bucket it went. It's taken a while to clean up but now it's ready for its next purpose. This has got to be one of the most interesting things that I have found at a historical bottle dump. It is an Alexandra baby feeding bottle by S Maw, Son & Sons, London, England. Unfortunately the top part is broken, but it was just too good to leave behind. It would have originally contained a stopper with rubber tubing that led to a rubber teat. These bottles ended up with the unfortunate nickname of 'the murder bottle'. This was because the design allowed dangerous levels of bacteria to build up in the parts that were difficult to wash, leading to the deaths of many infants. The Victorians did not yet understand about bacteria, but once scientific discoveries progressed safer baby bottle designs were introduced. Various bits found at the Victorian/Edwardian dump. These are the first long neck Bovril bottles that I have found! They date between 1897 to 1913. One of the aqua bottle stoppers is embossed with E. Breffit & co Limited, Castleford & London. Sorting out some recent bottles. I now have a cute family of 1930s Gordon's gin bottles! I absolutely love the tall, patterned art deco bottle. I am assuming it contained soda or fruit juice but I can't find out any info on it! The Amber glass Certo bottles with upside-down measurements is a nice find, and the Wellcome Chemical Works bottle probably contained carbolic acid. 🌈Taste The Rainbow!🌈 This is another one of my ‘incomplete’ finds, however, it is pretty easy to determine what this packet originally contained! 🍬 ——————————————————————————————— 🗺Location: Local woodland walk in 2021 🌲 ➡️Best Before Date: Unknown, however, after researching other Skittles packets from over the years, the design used in 1989/1990 matches this one exactly 🔎 🎂Age: 31 years old 🌟Condition: Only a small fragment of the packet remains, with a lot of fading occurring to the overall colour/design.
