My favorite places to hike in Alabama are those somewhat forgotten or infrequently visited. Most of the time I don’t know much about them until I get there so I’m guaranteed a surprise! I would consider Perry Lakes Park to be one of those places, and a hidden gem. Years ago I visited the park after a heavy rain that caused the trail and road to the beach to flood. Both routes were impassable. I left sorely disappointed and hadn’t been back since lol. So I didn’t do a scout hike beforehand, which I rarely forego when planning a group hike. That and my previous visit had me a little nervous to say the least. When we arrived the bugs greeted us with open arms. Perry Lakes Park is little bit of a wild place that needs some love. Someone said it looked like something out of The Jungle Book. The trail was overgrown but definitely passable. The birding tower was in good condition and the views from the top—breathtaking. I could sense right away why the place is known for birding. The icing on the cake was a true beach next to the clear Cahaba River. I feel our group is getting wiser and more versatile with each hike. Hiking is an inherently unpredictable hobby but we do have some control over what we’re going to get by doing our research and planning accordingly. I would say everything about this hike was a success 💙 P.S. 2024 BONUS TRIP - ICELAND - OCT 30-NOV 5! The Northern Lights are supposed to be especially good this winter so we decided to add a bonus trip with the hopes of getting to see them. We intentionally chose our dates to ensure that we still have enough daylight to see the sights and beauty of Iceland, while also giving us then best chance at seeing the Northern Lights. They can be visible September - March, but they are most active from November to January! We are even bringing @eylenepirez to share all of her astronomy knowledge with us! A couple of soaking visits to hot springs, including the infamous Blue Lagoon, will help to keep us warm and provide some relaxation moments. Puffy jacket and warm beanies will be mandatory for this fun adventure! Registration opens at 8am PST on Monday, April 29th!

Regardless the character of the eternal city really came out during this visit. Hold onto your articles of clothing, mother nature is in a mood this week. Chilly temps, rain, snow, wind, you name it. A mountain a day, a run, and a hike are the daily grind. ~15 miles+ a day and the mountain legs have returned. A run in with a cactus on Francis shredded my elastic.. ✅ pantless mountain descent off the bucket list. A big mileage day in Sedona was spent dodging lightning and rain.. didn’t quite dodge the 2 hrs of hail. Think high speed blueberries pelting you in the face- we’re talking the gmo size variety. Despite being a city of boulders there’s a shortage of places to hide. Such serenity just being out in it though. There were ten minutes where the clouds lifted before the hail storm- i can’t begin to describe the moment of witnessing a double rainbow over Midgley Bridge. 🤠 spent our last day in California visiting the ol’ Wild West💫 A few weeks ago, I found a photo of me and my dad, naturally, I sent it to the family group chat and moved on. Then, on Sunday, just a few hours into our final drive out of San Diego, I saw an exit for “Calico Ghost Town.” I immediately took it and told Leigh we had to see it. We spent the afternoon exploring an old silver mine, panning for gold, sweating profusely and telling people about the photo we recreated. TL;DR: Take the exit, might be another 20 years before you have the chance again. #QueerTravel #WomenWhoExplore #TravelDiaries #travelgram
I spent yesterday in Mexico, the home of my great grand parents, and it was incredible and heavy. This wall begins in the ocean and continues for miles along the Mexican border. Opposite it, is an identical wall, along the US border, and in some areas, there is space between the lines, a sort of no man’s land. The space (behind me) used to be “friendship park”, where family’s on both sides of the border could gather, spend time together and relax without having to cross into the other nation. That space now is patrolled by armed vehicles, US border patrol, and more. It no longer is a space for family to reconnect but now is a reminder of the conflict between our nations. The last picture is a map of the border, on it hangs body tags of those who lost their lives while attempting to cross the border into the United States. The beige tags belong to those who have been identified and the orange tags have not. It took me entirely too long to finally visit, I didn’t want to leave, but I’m happy I was able to. I’m fortunate enough to go on a whim. Something many people, to include my relatives, could not. #QueerTravel #WomenWhoExplore #TravelDiaries #travelgram
