This past weekend I led a group of Au Pairs through the Harlem Renaissance in DC tour as part of their education about that Era and those Washingtonians who controbuted to it. From jazz greats to Howard professors, DC played a huge part in what was also called the "New Negro Movement" coined by Howard professor Alain Locke. This is a day late, but in honor of Labor Day I wanted to share a story about DC's first labor march undertaken in 1894 by a group of unemployed people known as "Coxey's Army." There had been an economic crash in 1893 that had a particularly sharp impact since the industrial revolution had introduced for the first time consistent, non-seasonal, non-farm-based employment for a great percentage of the country. As the market crashed, Industrialists started laying off people in droves. Jacob Coxey, an Ohioan businessman, developed a Bill for Congress called the "Good Roads Bill," which outlined a plan in which the U.S. government would use infrastructure funds to pay unemployed workers to improve local roads. To promote this Bill and convince Congress to act, Coxey led a group of unemployed workers in a march from Masillon, Ohio, to Washington, DC. After over a month of marching, in which the group swelled from a few dozen to a few thousand, they arrived in DC with plans to march on the Capitol building on May 1st of 1894. Capitol police responded to their arrival on the Hill with clubs and arrests, with Coxey and his co-organizer Carl Browne being arrested on the spot. The Bill went nowhere. Ironically enough, 50 years later in 1944, Jacob Coxey was invited to the Capitol Steps to finally read his petition. This was ten years after the New Deal was already enacted, which embodied many of the same ideals that drove the first Labor March on Washington. We were lucky weather-wise for the French Connections tour this afternoon. Thanks to my guests for coming out and listening to me wax on about Lafayette, L'Enfant and Monnet, whose plaque we ended in front of at the Willard Intercontinental. Jean Monnet worked out of the Willard during WWIi, helping to coordinate aid to France with FDR.
