"Music should enrich the soul; it should teach spirituality by showing a person a portion of himself that he would not discover otherwise. It's easy to rediscover part of yourself, but through art you can be shown part of yourself you never knew existed. That's the real mission of art. The artist has to find something within himself that's universal and which he can put into terms that are communicable to other people. The magic of it is that art can communicate to a person without his realizing it... enrichment, that's the function of music." -Bill Evans 📷 Bill Evans, photograph by Roy De Carava, used for the album cover of "Conversations with Myself" 🎷 Join the @jazzphotoarchives Collective! 🔗 Support the collective through the store. .. . GLENN ZOTTOLA & CHICK COREA The Legend & I . With his untimely passing in February 2021, accolades emanated worldwide from musicians, critics and fans about multi-Grammy winner Chick Corea. What was less known then is the fact that Corea and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Glenn Zottola were not only longtime close pals, but frequently interacted musically. The Legend & I is an artistic culmination of that friendship and professional relationship. And, as might be expected from artists of this caliber, the result is spectacular. . By Nicholas F. Vagif Mustafazade in Tallin Jazz Festival, 1967 By the beginning of the early 1960s, Vagif was gaining recognition outside of Azerbaijan as a jazz musician. . Repost @jazzphotoarchives ・・・ 📷 Leon Thomas and family, 1973. Thomas has been called the "John Coltrane of jazz vocalists". According to music essayist and yodel expert Bart Plantenga, he combined scat singing, vocalese techniques from African tradition, and a unique approach to yodeling, "performing ritualistic vocals infused by spiritual quests, soul music, and Pygmy yodeling techniques."Thomas's extension of the anthropological "verbal energy"—"whenever his Pygmy-yodel-scat erupted from the opening at the top of his larynx"—returns the listener back to "Pygmy yodeling not only via ethnomusicological investigation but via ur-soul, or back-to-Africa spiritual pilgrimage", Plantenga said. According to Ben Ratliff of The New York Times, Thomas had begun his career "as a straight blues-jazz singer" with a "stout tenor voice", but by the mid-1960s, he "had begun to spend time with young jazz musicians who were looking to Africa, the East and meditation for musical material … Thomas developed his ululating singing style, which has been compared to African pygmy and American Indian singing techniques and which he later called 'soularphone.' He believed that his ancestors had given him his elastic throat articulation, he said, and henceforth always used it."Robert Christgau wrote of the significance behind Thomas's vocal abilities in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981): "He has literally expanded the musical possibilities of the human voice. He is as powerful a jazz/blues singer as Joe Williams or Joe Turner, both of whom he occasionally resembles, as inventive a scatter as Ella Fitzgerald. But that's just the beginning, for despite the generation lag, Thomas beats Turner and Williams in their mode even while singing his own, and he turns scatting from a virtuoso trick into an atavistic call from the unconscious." 🎷 Join the @jazzphotoarchives Collective! 🔗 Support the collective through the store. Jazz kissa (ジャズ喫茶), or jazu kissa, are cafés specialised in the playing & appreciation of jazz • “Kissa” comes from kissaten, the Japanese name for a local neighborhood cafe. • The Jazz kissa usually has a high-quality stereo system, dim lighting (“speak-easy” style) and serves booze and coffee • Jazz first came to Japan with Filipino musicians working on passenger ships. These musicians took work in Japanese hotels and ballrooms in port cities like Kobe and Yokohama • The first jazz cafes opened in Japan in the late 1920’s, as part of a larger curiosity for “western” culture • “coffee was the aroma and taste of the era, so jazz became the sound track of modern life” • By the end of the 1920s, due to the Japanese government’s mistrust of foreign influence, jazz was portrayed as a moral danger, and clubs were shut down • The Jazz kissa made a comeback in the 1950’s. Live jazz performances were rare in Japan, and imported records were expensive. The Jazz kissa then became the only place for many to listen to contemporary jazz • Source : Merry I. During the Civil Rights era, Jazz musicians faced immense challenges due to racial segregation and discrimination. Despite their talent and contributions to American culture, African American artists often found themselves confined to segregated venues and subjected to unequal treatment in the music industry. Limited opportunities for gigs, unequal pay, and systemic racism hindered their success, yet they persisted, using their music as a powerful tool for social commentary and resistance against oppression. Icons like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and John Coltrane courageously addressed themes of racial injustice through their compositions, amplifying the voices of the marginalized and contributing to the broader movement for civil rights and equality. #JazzHistory #CivilRightsMovement #SocialJustice 🎶✊🏿

Remembering the great Ella Fitzgerald who was born on this day in 1917. Sometimes referred to as the “First Lady of Song” and “Queen of Jazz”, she was known for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, intonation and a “horn-like” improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. As a child, Fitzgerald wanted to be a dancer, but when she panicked at an amateur contest in 1934 at New York City’s Apollo Theatre and sang in a style influenced by the jazz vocalist Connee Boswell instead, she won first prize. During her long career Fitzgerald recorded more than 100 albums of several kinds of music. In addition to winning many Grammy awards for her recordings, Fitzgerald was honored with lifetime achievement awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Here, she is performing performing “Satin Doll” live at the Antibes Juan-les-Pins Jazz Festival in 1966.

#ACCADDEOGGI 1917- Nasce Ella Fitzgerald: cantante statunitense. . . . . #laziocreativo #ellafitzgerald #legend #jazz #jazzy #singer #swing #singer #vocalist #jazz #blues #voice #sing #voice #vocals #music #musiclover #musician #musically #musicicon #jazzroyalty #jazzhistory

Thelonious Monk had a distinctive sense of style, particularly his habit of wearing a variety of stylish hats. Monk was often seen sporting a wide array of hats, ranging from fedoras to berets, which became somewhat of a trademark for him. His unique fashion sense added to his already eccentric persona, making him instantly recognizable both on and off the stage. Monk's hats became such a notable part of his image that they are often referenced in descriptions of his appearance and have even been depicted in various jazz-inspired artwork and caricatures. #Jazz #JazzMusic #JazzLovers #JazzLife #JazzArt #JazzHistory #JazzLegends #JazzIcons #JazzCulture #JazzCommunity #JazzInspiration #JazzInnovators #JazzEducation #JazzImprovisation #JazzStandards #JazzAppreciation #JazzFestival #JazzPerformance #JazzSession #JazzNight

This year, for #JazzAppreciationMonth, we asked our team to tell us what their favourite artists, albums, singles or gigs were and Dave, our Executive Producer shared a gig that really stuck in his memory… “I feel extremely lucky to have seen Wayne Krantz with Tim Lefebvre and Keith Carlock touring the Greenwich Mean album in the early 2000’s at PizzaExpress Jazz Club, in Soho London. The group had a loose, jamming approach to Krantz’s compositions and were a total monster-3-headed groove-hydra. The album had been stitched together from a years’ worth of live recordings at the 55 Bar in New York and had crazy tempo switches and sudden musical left turns. The group devised a method to recreate an improvised version of that sound live and the resulting show was visceral and exciting and an absolute master class in group improvisation and collective responsiveness. To see it up close in such a small venue just compounded the impact.” Photos from artists albums and social media accounts @waynekrantz5 #jazzappreciation #jazzappreciationmonth2024 #lancasterjazzfest #lancasterjazzfestival #lancasterjazz24 #jazz #jazzmusic #jazzhistory #jazzfestival #jazzmusician #jazzmusicians #jazzmusicfestival #jazzscene #jazzsceneuk #jazzuk #WayneKrantz #PizzaExpressJazzClub
