🐋 ‘WH’ FOR WHALE 🐋 Continuing on with looking at whales, William has been busy with lots of different activities.. We spoke for a long time about the fact that although blue whales are so big, they eat tiny plankton.. ( cue lots of questions about sponge bob 🤣.. ).. William then sorted through his flash cards that I had mixed up to see if he could find all of the cetaceans and match them to his sheet. After he had finished, we looked at the word whale.. namely the ‘wh’ sound.. and William used his chalk board to write down as many words as he could beginning with ‘wh’.. We finished off with a little bit of painting, where Williams painted some blue whales diving through the ocean layers.. 🐋 BLUE WHALE ANATOMY 🐋 Did you know that the blue whale is not just the largest living animal, but it may well be the largest animal to have ever lived! The heaviest blue whale recorded weighed 190 tonnes ~ 20 times heavier than the T-Rex!! This morning we have been learning more about this wonderful and beautiful creature.. After watching a documentary this morning together.. Henry then read all about them in his Anthology of Aquatic life book. An amazing fact about blue whales, is that despite their enormous size.. they can’t swallow anything bigger than a grapefruit! .. Home ed is a legally equal and valid choice to the school system. It is, unfortunately, impossible to ignore that many home educators do find themselves here due to failures elsewhere - we would never want to diminish those experiences, and we are sorry you went through them. 🔦 UV MINERAL HUNT 🔦 Last week, accompanied by Henry.. we headed out for the most amazing evening UV mineral hunting with @fossilsgalore !! To say the experience was amazing, is a complete understatement.. We met Palaeontologist Jamie Jordan and his fantastic team up in the car park at the top of the cliffs, and were guided down to the beach by torchlight with the rest of our group.. where we all switch off our torches and turned on our UV lights.. Watching Henry’s face light up was a picture in itself, and one that I will never forget.. After coming home with a lovely pot of finds, today William decided that he would like like to have a go at exploring them. Along with Henry’s finds, he picked up lots of belemnite fossils.. We teamed Henry’s finds up today with some more minerals that we previously bought from @fossilsgalore including some amazing ( and Williams favourite for obvious reasons ) Willemite 🤣.. It just goes to show.. Never judge a book by its cover, as sometimes its the ones that you don’t expect that can the shine the brightest 🤍

So he did it! Kept him busy for a solid 5 odd hours but, he loved it and is still playing wih it. He played with the rubber band settings to adjust the distance the arrows travel. Now that's a whole lot of education happening right there - Problem solving, engineering, forces, etc. We love Home Ed. We (mostly Pete while I chased ada) put some serious work in at the community garden this afternoon! Managed to uncover this path which was completely overgrown, collected several million blackberries which will be made into some sort of pie/cake tomorrow, filled 742 wheelbarrows with what we'd managed to cut back and just really enjoyed it! Eves got a fractured foot at the minute so couldn't really get stuck in but she still managed to pick some berries, and hack spent ages cleaning the polytunnel floors! My sunflowers had started wilting and turning colour so time to make use of them in a different way. Bird feeders. We can't leave them in our garden due to our killer cat lol. So we will put them out on our next dog walk. Torrential rain cancelled forest school yesterday so we had a day of perfecting yo-yo and juggling skills, crochet, Pokémon battles, TACO CAT GOAT CHEESE PIZZA, collecting cousin from school and making toffee apples. When we’ve not been out and about it’s mainly been dinosaur activities for the past few days. The boys are making stegosaurus from paper plates to make into birthday cards for grandpa. Dinosaur colouring, sewing, watching dinosaur shows on tv and playing too 🦕 🦖 Then the usual bits of phonics - ie sound, maths - numberbonds to 10 and a maths factor quest. A magical Home Ed day 💚💫☺️ I often still hear a lot from other parents that they couldn’t home educate, or wouldn’t want to, and whilst I totally understand that, I think a misconception around HE is that you never get a break from your kids…ever, and that it’s all on you. So whilst it’s true we are together all the time and rarely get a break in that way, we are also so often in community. We are so often with friends, sharing the load, sharing food, sharing things (Jasmine’s life jacket and body board are not ours…they were shared with us on the day) and we share responsibility for watching and supporting the kids, playing with them and generally looking out for everyone’s wellbeing (adults included!). When we’re together in community, whether for 6 hours or for 5 days, it doesn’t feel effortful. It feels entirely joyful and magical. The children entertain themselves effortlessly, playing with different children throughout the day and creating games from the world around them, exploring where they are and learning from each other. They don’t need instructions or ideas or activity suggestions, they just flow. The parents sit together and chat (or swim, in the case.) We meet our own needs by being together and our days and our kids days are mutually fulfilling and really do feel like magical adventures you do with your best friends. We are so lucky to have a thriving HEd community with so many families sharing values, interests and philosophies. I love it so much! Ps: behind the picturesque pics there was the morning prep of packing picnics, gathering swimming gear, packing towels, applying suncream, and all the usual parenting stuff and by 7pm I was done with it all 🤣🤪 but, it was totally worth it!

Castles and forest school Today was warrrrrrm up here! We had a lovely session at forest school based on the sense of smell 👃. And then on the way home we drive past a castle so we had a little chat about why castles might have been built and what special features they might have... J decided as soon as we got home he wanted to build a castle and was determined to 'dig the foundations' while I made lunch. So this is what we ended up with after talking about drawbridges, turrets, portcullis , moats and barbicans. ❤️ It's very unlikely he would've had the opportunity to follow his own interests and build this kind of thing in a school setting #welovehomeed #homeed #castles

Our trip to Legoland was so much fun! I love that Home Ed gives us the freedom to do these trips off-peak on what is just a regular school day for most of the country. It’s definitely a huge bonus! On our visit, the park had 2500 visitors which felt busy enough. On a peak day we were told there can be up to 12,000 visitors and queues of up to an hour for the best rides. 🤯🤯🤯 Instead we had 5-10 minute queues max and could have gone straight back onto most rides. I’m sure there were lots of kids there who had taken a sneaky day off school (more power to you!) but at what cost? Fines? A black mark against their name? Feeling behind in lessons? Parental conflict / guilt? Of course these sorts of trips aren’t a regular occurrence due to cost (although we also did get a massively discounted rate) but it’s the same for Museum trips, visiting London or any form of travel and even just being at the park. To the Children's Commissioner, Please stop quoting "what children want" to push your own agenda. Please spend some time actually listening to what children and their parents are saying. Please give a voice to the many children who prefer to learn outside of school. Please recognise that learning and socialisation does happen outside the classroom. Please admit that MOST home educators choose home ed because they are making their child's wellbeing and development a priority. Please acknowledge that mental health issues amongst young people were huge pre-covid and actually improved during lockdown. Please stop talking about these "lost", "hidden" home educated children when I dread to think how many children are at school AND feel that way every day. And finally, if you truly are in post to ensure the rights of children and young people, then you really really do need to open your eyes to the fact that so many more parents are now home educating because lockdown gave them the opportunity to see how utterly amazing it is!
