The true Kingsmead spirit of giving without expecting reward was evident on Saturday, 6 April when Roedean, St David’s Marist Inanda, De La Salle Holy Cross and Kingsmead College travelled to the St David’s Marist Alexander Campus for Inter School Volunteering. We were warmly welcomed by Father Madondo, who shared the importance of young people volunteering and thanked the students for their time and spending their Saturday morning in the service of others. Students were divided into three groups. The first group joined the gogos from the Old Age Home and prepared vegetables – generously donated by a parent from De La Salle Holy Cross – for soup. The second group planted flowers – much to the delight of the residents of the Old Age Home. The third group began work on a mural that will adorn the wall outside of the Alex Campus. The groups rotated throughout the course of the morning. It was beautiful to see how the various groups built on the artwork of the previous groups. At the end of the morning, students joined the residents of the Old Age Home for a spirited game of Bingo! Nyasha Musimwa from De La Salle Holy Cross commented, “It's inspiring to see young people coming together from different schools to make a positive impact in their community. Events like these not only benefit those who receive assistance but also instil valuable lessons of compassion, teamwork, and social responsibility in the volunteers themselves. It seems like I have a LOT Of conversation with parents of girls who fit a similar profile. They struggle to regulate significantly at home. They’re starting to lag behind the other girls in their class socially. And their grades aren’t what their parents know they could be. At least one parent is intuitively wondering about attention hurdles, but has gone to a teacher who has said she’s really doing fine in school. And sometimes she’s doing better than fine. Girls with ADHD and other academic challenges often go unrecognized in an academic setting. Boys are noticed quickly due to their impulsivity and lack of focus. Because of what we’ve talked about before with girls wanting to please, girls use every bit of their energy to focus during the school day—to please the teacher and not stand out in a negative way. But, the grades eventually start to slip. She begins to miss social cues and the other girls notice and leave her out. She gravitates toward the boys who are “easier” to play with. And her confidence begins to take a toll. In today’s video, I talk more about what I’m seeing with girls and attention hurdles. If you have ever wondered if your daughter might lean toward ADHD, watch the video. To further complicate matters, anxiety and ADHD can look identical symptomatically. But, how we handle from an educational standpoint and even a parenting standpoint is entirely different. I often recommend that parents start with testing, if you’re wondering which your child might be dealing with. In fact, I believe it can help every child. It basically allows us to look inside the hood from a very very black and white standpoint in terms of their learning and emotions to see exactly what might be going on. And if there are academic hurdles, have your kids see an educational consultant. We’ve had a fantastic one on the podcast by the name of Kimberly Carraway (episodes 145 and 146). Those episodes can certainly help. But just know, whatever your child or family might be facing, there is always help. And hope. Your pediatrician and/or school would have a list of referrals for both testing and support. Cheering you on! ❤️

In this age of crippling and rampant perfectionism, pervasive anxiety, and all-encompassing entitlement, kids need to know that they will fail, learn to take responsibility for those failures and both ask for and offer forgiveness. You’ve heard us say it a million times. Kids learn more from observation than information. They are watching—even when they don’t look like it. Try to bring up one time you made a mistake this week in front of your kids…laughing at yourself in the process. Talk about your responsibility in that mistake and how you feel about it. Let’s layer in feelings to the facts. And talk about how you either asked for forgiveness or do so in front of them. For example, “I can’t believe I made a joke today that hurt my friend at work’s feelings. As soon as I realized it, I went to him and told him how sorry I was. I told him that his friendship matters a lot to me and asked for his forgiveness,” kind of thing. A cycle check in is always a beautiful embodied practice that helps us arrive in the here and now. Big stories start with little chapters ✨ When you see your littles on a huge theatre stage, no words can even describe it 🥹 I mean that literally because I’ve been sat here for an hour with no words but the whole experience running through my head on repeat. I still remember that first time we went to Asha’s school play a couple of years ago, one foot on stage and she burst into tears, she remained at the back of the stage clung to a teacher in tears. I never wanted to be that mum that pressured her kids into anything, or force them down a path they’re not comfortable with, all I’ve ever wanted from the moment they were able, is to find something they truly love and find themselves through. I still feel awful I ever thought it but my exact thought that moment we left that school play was “what was the point of even going, all we did was watch our child cry at the back of the stage.” After hours of sitting with that thought I soon enough realised it’s all about the time & effort put into getting to that point of taking those steps into the spot light, the hours, days, weeks of practice, managing the emotions/feelings it brings on performing in front of others, there’s just so much that goes on in the preparation for it that even if they don’t do a thing on stage they did all of that beforehand and gave it a shot, that is all that matters.
