To advocate for women’s safety at industry conferences, the Power Beacons — a group of like-minded women in commercial real estate — has launched a new initiative that includes two key components: 1. An awareness campaign to help heighten vigilance and negate the harassment that can come with conference season. How to Spot a Weirdo — GWF Strategy Session #3🧠 Here’s a takeaway on “why being nice doesn’t count for jack..” I cringe when I hear someone qualify a persons character or intent because “they seem nice”.. and it’s so common! Here’s the thing. Everyone knows how to be nice. Including awful people. Being nice is the cheapest way to buy your trust. They say a person must see an ad at least 7 times to earn enough trust to buy. But for many it only takes some person being nice ONE time to earn the trust to put their lives in jeopardy. EX: “You look like you need help, can I carry those groceries inside for you?” “I’m heading that way too, do you want a ride?” (real examples of niceness that preceded an attack) Much more commonly, a continual show of niceness earns someone in your circle so much trust that their blatantly inappropriate actions get default written off, time and time again, by almost everyone. Because ‘he’s just so nice’! The excuses flood faster than a greased pig: “he probably doesn’t realize he’s being inappropriate” “he’s just that dumb I guess, I can’t see him having bad intentions” etc. Nice is a double edged sword. The guard-lowering effect of nice is only compounded by our own desire to be nice to others, and especially to reciprocate when others are nice to us. When women or girls are attacked, it’s almost always after someone was really really nice to them. I’m not saying that you have to be rude or paranoid, just don’t be sold on people so easily, especially when their ACTIONS diverge from the very showy niceness. In my opinion, any behavior that deviates from the norm, including being overly friendly, nice, charming, is a reason to pay more attention. My advise: - Niceness is an ability not a trait. Change ‘he IS so nice’ —> to ‘he is BEING nice’. - explicitly rebuff unwanted approaches - remind yourself that it’s not your responsibility to attribute good intent to bad behavior. Always listen to what the actions say, not the words. Shaun Hockley is 48 years old and proud father of three, Kai, Mason and Jaida and has a beautiful wife of 20 years Leah Hockley. Shaun grew up in the surf culture of Maroubra beach, became a tradesman then opened up a gym, Reborn fitness and well-being in Little Bay Sydney. The boutique style gym offered personal and group training but the main focus was boxing. At one stage Shaun had the most female amateur boxers in Sydney and hosted many events including a female only event supporting awareness of domestic violence against women. Shaun and Leah have had several amateur boxing matches and Shaun took the heavyweight masters Australian title in 2019. Shaun has hosted self defence classes for women in the gym which were a lot of fun. The women left with knowledge on how to assess a situation of potential violence as well as how to kick some ass if need be. Gun safety is absolutely paramount and those who make the decision to have guns in their lives must become responsible gun owners. There is *so* much more to owning a gun than the purchase. Additionally, I want to develop training courses removing the macho gun-culture and offer intimidation free training for individuals (and families!) who want to learn IF gun ownership is right for them. Not everyone wants to get embroiled in buying a bunch of camouflage or putting gun stickers on their cars. I believe everyone should be able to find information and training without being ridiculed or treated in a condescending manner. They also should be afforded knowledge of ways to protect themselves other than firearms. Owning a gun isn't right for everyone. I'm in the midst of the next evolution. What is not pictured the planning and thinking for a simple night out… so how many of my female friends can relate? 1) how can I get there safely, I should drive public transport or an Uber at night nah too risky 2) I shouldn’t drink alcohol, my drink may get spiked or I might lose awareness 3) it’s quite dark I better park near a light so I can see around my car 4) better select an outfit where I didn’t show too much cleavage or leg so no crude comments (which if I’m honest is the best case scenario) 5) did we select a busy restaurant where lots of people would be around in case any issues. 6) walking to and from the restaurant how am I carrying my keys and phone are they in easy access.
