Alle platen zijn inmiddels de deur uit. Ze gaan dan eerst naar een lithograaf die de illustraties digitaliseert. En dan wordt het boek opgemaakt bij @uitgeverijlemniscaat. Zo benieuwd! Tijdens de hele warme zomerdagen in juni zat ik dus nog volop in sneeuw en ijs illustraties. Of het verkoeling gaf? Nee, dat niet maar wel werd de heimwee naar het poolgebied weer aangewakkerd. W.I.P... chipping away at this new woodcut idea this morning/ afternoon while listening to @tristan_sherwood_printmaker and Nat @theinsectarium printmakers chat. Do head over and give it a watch, I always learn plenty new. That’s the great thing about the creative community on Instagram always willing to share and help. As for this block, well after sharing this wintery sketch at the weekend I wasn’t sure later that day if it was really working. I put it to one side for a day, before starting. I am still not completely certain about aspects of it but have decided to trust the process and just go for it. I am waiting on some new sample ink swatches from Hawthorn printmakers who are kindly sending some too me to see them on paper before I buy. I have a pretty good idea of the colour palette for this and they have an excellent range of earth like colours and greys for this scene. Thought I would get a head start on the carving anyway before the inks arrive. It’s going to be a two block print with the underlying layer mostly white for the snow (which I have already carved on the reverse of this block) and I will look to print on a natural tan like colour paper, most likely kitakata, to allow the snow and the blue grey colours to really stand out. W.I.P... going slightly mad carving tiny branches! 😅 I think this is the smallest woodcut I have carved to date and not sure why I thought this particular composition was a good idea. 😂 I shall see how it looks though, this one is almost ready for a first proof print. My woodcut printing addiction continues apace, and I’m discovering how technical it is to get the ink thickness right! Too thick (picture disappears), too thin (its mottled like this one), blobby (due to hairs, bits of wood in the ink etc)... I’ve had all the problems in a single half hour 🤣.
