Takuya Yamashita Stack of DM-chan 2 2024 281×412×150mm Oil woodcut on Kent paper, bolt The character named "DM-chan" was original designed by manga artist Onta Niwako, and was inspired by the messenger god Hermes from Greek. "DM-chan" was the personification of the medium of information transmission itself. In the midst of the personal struggles that is my separation with ex-partner, I came across the theme of "melancholia" explored by many printmakers, including Albrecht Dürer. Contrary to popular belief, the melancholic sentiment expressed by these printmakers was not entirely negative, but reflected a thoughtful attitude that explored hope in the midst of anxiety. Inspired by this theme, I decided to use DM-chan as my alter ego to express my own experiences. The title of the new series is "Daily Melancholia" that twist initials of " DM-chan". The character's design evolved from the messenger god Hermes to a melancholic angel created by printmakers of the past. By printmaking "DM-chan" over and over , I aim to express ruminating thoughts and symbolize the hope that shines through the melancholy. Our new book covers are now available! The fabric comes from two villages in the northern region of Rajasthan, India: Saganer and Bagru. They are made using traditional hand-block printing techniques, and the sewing of the book covers is done by retired aunties from a neighborhood in Suzhou, historical city east of Shanghai. These book covers are closely related to the 51 Personae Project, as the creator (who connects the fabric from these two Indian villages with the retired aunties from Suzhou) Bao Yan was one of the Personae in the 2016-2017 Shanghai Biennale 51 Personae Project. He resigned from his job in the retail sector of daily consumer goods in 2012 and came to India without knowing anyone to explore local handicrafts, bringing them back to China and introduce them to the Chinese here. Over a decade later, he still operates as a team of one or two people, together with his Sri Lankan partner, promoting a small-scale Silk Road independent movement of handicrafts...With no design background of any kind, he occasionally also design patterns like this one, the tiger comes from a traditional Indian toy. We currently have up to 16 styles of book covers with different patterns, and mostly traditional patterns. Book covers are like clothes for books, and our three heights of 23cm, 21cm, and 19cm basically cover the heights of most common books. Aka Hiro (Red Hiro), relief print on paper, 1994. This little single-color relief print was made in my second year living in Japan, when I was still studying the detailed business of multi-color woodblock printmaking. During my studies I made a few single color prints like this, sometimes in black with hand coloring, a larger number of kappazuri stencil prints, and mixed media works mixing lithography with stencil. In the midst of the personal struggles that is my separation with ex-partner, I came across the theme of "melancholia" explored by many printmakers, including Albrecht Dürer. Contrary to popular belief, the melancholic sentiment expressed by these printmakers was not entirely negative, but reflected a thoughtful attitude that explored hope in the midst of anxiety. Inspired by this theme, I decided to use DM-chan as my alter ego to express my own experiences. The title of the new series is "Daily Melancholia" that twist initials of " DM-chan". The character's design evolved from the messenger god Hermes to a melancholic angel created by printmakers of the past. By printmaking "DM-chan" over and over , I aim to express ruminating thoughts and symbolize the hope that shines through the melancholy. In this work, a large number of DM-chan were printed on woodblock, stacked on top of each other, and bolted together. 👩🏻🦳 「DMちゃんの束3」 2024 281×412×150mm 油性木版、ボルト 本キャラクター「DMちゃん」は、SNSのダイレクトメッセージ（DM）にちなんで名付けられました。原画は漫画家の温田庭子へ発注しています。当初「DMちゃん」は情報伝達のメディアそのものを擬人化したキャラクターとして、ギリシャ神話の伝令神・ヘルメスをベースにデザインされていました。 私は最愛の人との別れによって、ネガティブな考えが反芻して止まない辛い時間を過ごします。そんな折に「メランコリア」というテーマに出会いました。このテーマはアルブレヒト・デューラーをはじめ、多くの版画家によって探求されてきました。そして先達が表現してきたメランコリックな感情は決してネガティブ一辺倒ではなく、長い時間の中で不安を抱きながらも希望の光を見出そうとする思慮深い姿勢を反映するものでした。 このテーマに感化された私は、自らの経験を表現するためにDMちゃんをオルターエゴとして扱いはじめます。新しいシリーズのタイトルはDMちゃんのイニシャルをもじり、「Daily Melanchollia」としました。キャラクターデザインは伝令神・ヘルメスから、過去の版画家によって創作されたメランコリックな天使へとリデザインされています。 不安げな表情を浮かべるDMちゃんを木版によって大量に刷り上げる行為は、反芻する思考を表現するとともに、長く続く鬱々とした日々に差し込む一筋の光を表現するものです。 画像の作品は、DMちゃんを木版画で大量に刷り上げた後、積み重ねて、透明のボルトで固定しました。 #takuyayamashita #woodcut #woodcut #woodcutprint #woodblockprint #printmaking #prints #comtemporaryart #performanceart #sculpture #山下拓也 #木版画 #版画 #現代美術 #彫刻

Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji 36+2 / 36 The second one of the extended series is number 36+2. The “Honjo Takegawa timberyard“. Honjo, in the prefecture of Saitama is located in the Tokyo metropolitan area, but on their north western outskirts. In Edo times Japan it was a rural area, where lumberjacks where harvesting timber and preparing the wood for construction work. The print shows a lumberjack, cutting planks of timber. In the background there is a small village, probably Honjo, resting on a river with Mt. Fuji positioned behind a row of Bamboo. Some of these prints can be visited in @metmuseum and the @britishmuseum today.
