We celebrated the world sparrow day a few days ago. Sparrows were ubiquitous when I was growing up. They are very active small seed eaters and are very resilient. That is only to a certain extent. We have gone beyond that extent and hence lost them in the urban landscape. Their numbers seem to be dwindling even in the rural areas. World Sparrow Day is celebrated every year on March 20th. These humble birds were once common almost everywhere. Unfortunately, in recent times, their population has suddenly declined over 75%. This rapid decline has not been completely understood - it is most likely due to a complicated combination of multiple reasons including decline in urban gardens which plays a critical role by providing small invertebrates to feed young chicks. इस विश्व गौरैया दिवस के अवसर पर बच्चों के बीच बिभिन्न गतिविधियों और क्रियाकलापों के मदद से जैव विविधता संरक्षण के प्रति और वर्तमान में जलवायु परिवर्तन, भू तापन और प्रजातियों के विलुप्ति जैसे गंभीर समस्याओं से अवगत कराने को हमने प्राथमिकता दी और भविष्य में आने वाले चुनौतियों से लड़ने हेतु इस पीढ़ी को जागरूक और तैयार करने की आवश्यकता भी है। गौरैया एक छोटी चिड़िया है जो अपने आदतों के कारण इंसानी आबादी के नज़दीक देखी जाती है लेकिन हाल के कुछ वर्षों में इंसानी रहन-सहन में बदलाव के चलते इनके संख्या प्रभावित हुई है और इनके घरोंदे अब कम देखे जाते हैं। घरों की बनावट में बदलाव, खेतों कीटनाशक दवाओं का अत्यधिक प्रयोग और पेड़ो की अंधाधुंध कटाई के साथ अन्य कई कारण हैं जो सिर्फ़ गौरैया को नही अन्य पक्षियों को भी ख़त्म होने को बाध्य कर रहा है। सामान्य सी दिखने वाली इस पक्षी का यह हाल है जिस से हम वाकिफ़ तो हैं और जागरूकता फैलाने के लिए एक दिवस के तौर पर मना लेते हैं! लेकिन गिनेचुने बचे गिद्ध, गोडावण और खरमोर के बारे में हम कितना सोच पाते हैं इस पर संसय होता है! आज जरूरत है कि बच्चों और समुदाय में स्थानीय जैव विविधता और उनके ऊपर खतरों जैसे आवास का ह्रास, आवास का विखंडन, शिकार, खेतों में रसायनों का अत्यधिक प्रयोग और पराली का जलाना आदि को लेकर पर्यावरणविद और वन्यजीव संरक्षक लगातार अभियान चलाकर जागरूकता फैलाए और उस से भी ज्यादा जरूरी है सरकारी विभाग संबंधित अपने योजनाओं को जमीनी स्तर पर लागू करे। जैव विविधता संतुलित होगी तो हम भी स्वस्थ रहेंगे। #sparrowday #worldsparrowday #habitatstrust #wildbipsabihar #birdsofindia #indianbirds #birdsofbihar #saveourspecies #birds

House Sparrow numbers have dropped with 50% since 1980. To have a healthy population a group of at least 10 individuals is needed. House Sparrows are very social creatures that do everything together. They are very home based and won’t wonder around much. So if you have House Sparrows in your garden, here are 7 tips to help them. 1. Provide nest boxes. They used to make nests underneath roof tiles or other hollow areas of buildings. Modern constructions lack these crucial nest sites. Hang several nest boxes together on a facade with the opening facing North-East. 2. Have a water bowl or little pond in the garden for them to drink and take a bath. 3. They also love taking dust baths to remove parasites. A sandbox or a place where you can remove some tiles is ideal. 4. They feed on seeds, grains, and flower seedheads during the Winter months. In Summer insects also play a crucial role in their diet. Plant endemic plants and flowers in the garden and don’t clean them up in Autumn. 5. House Sparrows love thick bushes or trees. These are safe places to hide from cats and sparrowhawks or look around for insects. Dense climbing plants are equally well loved. 6. Do not use any poison in your garden. Roundups (glycerophosphate) or poison against snails will not only remove weeds and snails, but it will also have a serious decline in birds, and it might even kill them. Also, hedgehogs, who love eating snails, might become a victim. It’s crazy that the EU just allowed the use of glycerophosphate again for the next 10 years, while it’s been proven to cause cancer and mess with our hormones! 7. Don’t clean up the leaves in your garden until the end of winter. Or sweep them together to a messy area in the garden. Birds love to look around for bugs in these rough patches. House Sparrow field studies made at a nearby farm. As always I had to learn the characteristic shapes and character of this species through field sketching. Starting with the head to try and capture their typical expressions. Afterward I try to capture the entire bird in graphite. Only when I’m happy with my line-work I’ll start adding colour. On March 22, Columbia College of Science and Commerce commemorated World Poetry Day, International Happiness Day, and World Sparrow Day with a series of events. In the first half, an Inter Group Poetry Competition was conducted in which many participants from various colleges of the group participated and recited their poems drawing emotions of love, integration, happiness, etc. In the latter half of the program, International Happiness Day and World Sparrow Day were celebrated. In this event, students presented self-made documentaries and hung food boxes for sparrows across the campus. As guests, Prof. Dr. S.K. Moulik (Principal CIET), Dr. A.K. Dubey (Principal CC), and Dr. Prakash Rao ( Associate Professor CIP) were present. Mr. Bharat Sahu, a very well-recognised poetry writer was also invited as a special guest. The winners of the Inter-Group Poetry Competition were awarded by the honorable guests. My new boxed set of 24 original digital prints, including the blue and grey image with birds shown here, was launched at the Fair by @eamesfineart and I’ll be back at their stand tomorrow afternoon (Friday) from 2 till 4, to talk about the work and to say hello to any of you lovely people who I hope might come along! Yesterday was annual World Storytelling Day and also marked the birth of Roman poet Ovid (43BCE - 17/18CE), famous for re-envisioning c.250 classical Greco-Roman myths: his “Metamorphoses” (8CE). On 20 March 2017, the Indian rivers Yamuna and Ganges were declared “living entities” by court in Uttarakhand – a decision swiftly overturned. Living rivers are a familiar Ovidian concept running through Metamorphoses, as are human transformations into birds and yesterday was also World Sparrow Day. Sparrow numbers are in serious decline especially in cities. I rarely see any in my London garden nowadays, which is really sad.
