{ CONCUPISCENTIA - Rococo Decadence } ⚜ Sister Alexia ; Holy pleasure ⚜ ( I apologize if this offends anybody, I'm merely stating history ) From the dark ages to the baroque era, religion was always a big part of everyday's life, when it comes to art, it was after all one of the main inspirations and the church was the primary patron. However, the call to faith was not always one of choice. Elite families in the early modern period, would consign a younger sibling to a monastery (called Forced monachization). This was generally done for economic purposes in order to keep the family estate intact for the primary heir. The "victims" were sometimes secondborns or boys unfit for military and girls getting an education while waiting for marriage. The idea of a girl being forced into monastic life, has since been a trope in nunsploitation art (many 1980s movies also) .The question of forced vocations has been debated at length by historians. There is a profusion of writings on the subject and not much in the reality of requests for annulment of vows. For the 18th century there are no less than a hundred novels and essays relating the misfortunes of young girls forced to enter the monastery. There are quite a few stories of scandals happening in convents troughout Europe, with some even becoming secrets brothels.. Since these individuals were forced into this life, their faith logially was not "their main focus" . Leading to a lot of corrupted monks and nuns. Starting with young novices, in the sweet ages of adolescence, becaming curious of their own bodies or the ones of their convent sisters, very ornate Dildos have been found in old convents. The more you try and resist nature's urges, the stronger they get. “Celibacy is not natural to men or to women; all bodily needs require their legitimate satisfaction, and celibacy is a disregard of natural law.” — Annie Besant. { CONCUPISCENTIA - Rococo Decadence } ⚜ Lady Grace Quill; NovelReading Fever ⚜ Today's age is all about trends and going viral on social media, and it is sometimes scary how fast a trend or a meme can become the center of attention. This in result can create panic in the rest of the society not following it or understanding it. Another trait of this digital age is the decline of people reading books, but did you know that in the 18th century, prominent persons were actually worried about the opposite problem..People reading excessively..Allow me to explain the setting: It is the age of enlightenment. Once considered a privilege only for the upper class, education was now gradually provided to “rich and poor alike”. The literacy rate in Europe grew significantly from the 17th to the 18th century, most likely due, at least in part, to religious influence, since most of the schools and colleges were organized by religious organizations. The Bible being printed in more languages motivated religions to increase the literacy rate. As printing itself became cheaper, books became more available to the masses, alongside of religious, science or philosophy books, there were of course also mythology and fables books, but something that was quite in rise during the early 18th century was the " fictional realism novel", stories happening in the contemporary.. and this new style quickly became a "problem". A dangerous disease appeared to afflict the young and all classes of people, some diagnosed it as reading addiction and others as reading fever or reading mania. All over Europe reports circulated about the outbreak of what was described as an epidemic of reading. The behaviours associated with this supposedly insidious contagion were sensation-seeking, morally dissolute and promiscuous behaviour. In the comments, I will post an extract text from the period. #blackbaroque #portrait #elisabethvigeelebrun #vigeelebrun #18thcentury #18thcenturycostume #18thcenturyinspired #18thcenturyart #painter #costumedesigner #18thcenturystyle #historicalcostume #likeapainting

The diaphanous reflection of Claire Fraser's ghost in an antique mirror hidden behind an old historical wall of the manor of Lallibroch reminds the fragments of a romance and adventure time travel in a 18th century tale. Flowers will be dryed and the mirror be faded, the antique books pages will turn to a pale yellow and the perfume will evaporate but the romantic spirit of this ethereal moment will be preserved in an old coffer whom only one unique finely crafted key will open. #outlanderinspired #outlanderobsessed #antiqueaesthetic #romanticaesthetic

Some frou-frou,  ruffles and gathers on the petticoat and the skirt to celebrate the spring sun rays we finally had today. I didn't wear these 18th century stays since a long time and found they could match with the pleated skirt I sewed in a romantic Toile de Jouy last year. It's a part of a complete historical outfit. #corsetmaking #historicalcorset #historicalundergarments #historicalsewing #historicalclothing

✨Discover the allure of Pearl Skin ✨ 🌸 The coquette aesthetic is taking over, and with it comes a new trend in complexion: Pearl Skin. Embraced for its diffused pearl pigments that softly blur and refract light, Pearl Skin gives your face a decadent and refined glow inspired by the precious gem. 🚀 Unlike other glowy skin trends, Pearl Skin doesn't aim for a wet shine but rather a radiant finish that beautifully contours the face without any glare or hot spots. It's a whole new level of luxury in luminosity, as described by Terry Barber, M·A·C Creative Director of Makeup Artistry. 🥰 Accompanied by shimmer eye makeup and frosty lips, Pearl Skin is intentionally decadent and playful, reclaiming a classically pretty look for the female gaze. With its regal and ornate allure reminiscent of 18th-century portraits, Pearl Skin exudes a gorgeous plumpness and luminosity that's undeniably coquettish. #PearlSkin #CoquetteAesthetic #RadiantComplexion #GlowySkin #MakeupTrend #BeautyTrend #MakeupArtistry #DecadentGlow #LuxuriousLuminosity #ShimmerMakeup #FrostyLips #ClassicallyPretty #RegalBeauty #OrnateSkin #18thCenturyInspired #BeautyInspiration #MakeupGoals #GlamourousLook #RadiantBeauty #MakeupLover #BeautyTips #FlawlessFinish #PrettyInPearl

I’ve been doing less sewing these days and have been spending more of my time designing for fabric. I’m now selling my designs on Spoonflower where I have a number of designs inspired by the rococo era including the one shown here. When I created this pattern I was specifically thinking about the #robealafrancaise and wanted to design a floral stripe that would look amazing on the “watteau” pleated back. Out of all the designs I have created, this is definitely my favorite! If you aren’t familiar with Spoonflower they have many different fabrics that the designs can be printed on. I would recommend the Petal Signature Cotton or the Organic Cotton Sateen if you were planning on making a robe à la française but please note the Signature cotton is a narrower width so you will probably require more fabric. I’ve been a bit hesitant about sharing my fabric designs on this account as it’s very different from showing the gowns I have created. But I do know there are a lot of makers who follow me here and may be interested in seeing my fabric designs. Please let me know if you would like to see more and if so I will continue to share designs that are historically inspired. If you are interested in purchasing any of my designs, please follow the links in my bio. #18thCenturyInspired #robealafrancaise #historicalcostumer #historicalcostuming #rococofabric #onlinefabrics #spoonflower #spoonflowerfabric #surfacepatterndesign #canadiandesigner #patterndesign #patternlove #patternartist #patterncommunity #printandpattern #spoonflowerartist #spoonflowerhome #spoonflowerdesigner #fabricdesigners #textiledesign #fabricshopping

{ CONCUPISCENTIA - Rococo Decadence } ⚜ Lady Adamante - Pourvu qu'elles soient douces ⚜ Today, other than just another historical fact, I would like to talk about something a bit more personal. I have been interested in Baroque and Rococo themes since I started learning about it in artshool classes, and through art I got more into the history, with every year wanting to learn more, and the more I learned, the more it started influencing my photography styles(insert galaxy brain meme). But if I try to dig deeper on what could have been the initial sparks in my brain for the love of this period, one could be of course watching Pirates of the Caribbean as a teenager, but maybe.... even earlier ...something I saw on tv, two videoclips/shortfilms of french singer Mylène Farmer, "Libertine" and "Pourvu qu'elles soient douces". The first was about courtesans and the second happening during the seven years' war (1756–1763). I might not have realised at the time, but these two videos planted the seeds of what I am today. Soo here is a picture slightly inspired by these clips, of a courtesan indecently wearing my soldier uniform, holding my flintlock rifle ( both selfmade and better visible when I'm wearing them XD ). "In the barracks late at night, I see a daring sight, A courtesan waiting in soldier's guise, The uniform clings to her curves with a daring delight, As she grips a flintlock rifle, close to her thighs. Her eyes a fire, her smile a sin, She beckons with a wicked grin, The scent of danger in the air, A dance of passion, a dangerous affair." { CONCUPISCENTIA - Rococo Decadence } ⚜ Countess Amethyste de Perignon; Sparkles and macarons ⚜ What is still today a typical representation of luxury and pleasure ? Well of course the combination of champagne & macarons ! The bubbles bringing freshness and lightness to this sugary little cake . We usually think of macarons as a meringue-based, "sandwiched" cookie filled with a ganache or jam. There is even a Ladurée shop inside the castle of Versailles selling them! But this kind appeared during the 19thcentury. Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” depicts her enjoying Macarons but the ones in the movie are an anachronism and will only be created in 1930. Before getting "sandwitched", this little cake made from almonds, sugar and egg whites, Seemingly appeared in Italy during the 13th century named "Amaretti" and quickly spread all over Europe during the Renaissance. The most famous types of macarons eaten by nobility would be either : the macarons d'Amiens or the macarons de Joyeuse (used in my picture), however the most "royal" macaron, the Court of Marie-Antoinette would eat would be the macaron de Saint-Émilion, as it was first offered to King Louis XIV for his Wedding, starting a tradition. Champagne, discovered by mistake. The region of Champagne was plagued by very cold winters. Temperatures reaching a freezing level, would halt the fermentation process. When the temperatures warmed up again in summer, a secondary fermentation occured inside the bottle causing carbon dioxide bubbles to form in the wine, creating the fizzy texture. Although considered faulty by local winemakers, the sparkling wine that survived was seen as a bit of a fun novelty and became more popular amongst French royalty in the late 17th century. This eventually led to the creation of the Champagne houses we know and love today. { CONCUPISCENTIA - Rococo Decadence } Finally back to some Rococo Courtesans and classy Ladies! Let's take advantage of this to share some historical anecdotes. ⚜ Baroness Aglaia Salvetti; Sugar, spice and everything nice⚜ If there is one symbol of decadence typical to the Early modern period, it's the obsession for the exotic things, it was after all the great time of navigation and discovery, long travels to far away lands, bringing back all kind of rare treasures, and then shown to court as a display of wealth. One of these "ultimate symbol of wealth" was the Pineapple/Ananas. Today of course, we can simply go to the groceries store and buy one. But back then, one pineapple could cost as much as 5000-7000CHF of today's money..Imagine certain wealthy citizens having to make difficult decisions between purchasing ‘a pineapple or a new carriage’ . Pineapples first came to Europe in the 16th century, brought by Christopher Columbus, but were impossible to cultivate in colder countries ( until the invention of special hothouses heated with horse manure) and also very difficult to transport from the colonies without spoiling, therefore due to their rarity, they became insanely popular and a status symbol that only the most wealthy could afford. It is important to note, the general lack of sweetness in the diet of the population at that time. Cane sugar was expensive, other fruits were seasonal and the regular populace would rarely have tasted anything so sweet. Because of its expense, it was placed in the centre of a table display as the crowning adornment of the feast. On many occasions, because the owner would wish to use the pineapple to its full value, it would be kept for as long as possible and only eaten when it had completely perished. { CONCUPISCENTIA - Rococo Decadence } Finally back to some Rococo Courtesans and classy Ladies! Let's take advantage of this to share some historical anecdotes. ⚜ Baroness Carmelia Volpe, manipulation and love letters ⚜ Aah the soft sound of a letter written with a quill. Thoughts and feelings carefully translated from the mind onto paper. In a day and age when you can send a text, a phonecall or an email, taking the time to write a letter is a labor of love. Drops of ink and drops of tears mixing in with the words. Post Roads and Post-Boys: In the 18th century, letters were carried by horse, by carriage or by messenger, depending the distance. However it was common for spies and troublemakers to intercept or bribe these carriers, to read or even forge fake informations. So people started to encrypt letters, or create particular folds. Letters of courtship, or a letter to a secret lover, describing a place to meet? Or even a letter explaining court Gossips ? A worried parent or a jealous nobleowoman would hire spies to find out information or trying to manipulate/blackmail. Pierre Choderlos de Laclos wrote the Dangerous Liaisons as a perfect exemple of this. “...should I draw you the picture of my Heart, it would be what I hope you still would Love; tho it containd nothing New; the early possession you obtained there; and the absolute power you have ever mantaind over it; leaves not the smallest space unoccupied” —Abigail to John Adams, December 23rd 1782 As I don't have more space on this post, in the comment I'm gonna write a beautiful poem from a 17th century poet named Aphra Behn, who talks about Desire. Her words were often reused in later loveletters. { CONCUPISCENTIA - Rococo Decadence } Finally back to some Rococo Courtesans and classy Ladies! Let's take advantage of this to share some historical anecdotes. ⚜ Mademoiselle Frézier, Lady of Strawberries ⚜ - Sonnet to the Strawberry by Helen Maria Williams (1759-1827) "The Strawberry blooms upon its lowly bed, Plant of my native soil! — the Lime may fling More potent fragrance on the zephyr's wing, The milky Cocoa richer juices shed, The white Guava lovelier blossoms spread. But not, like thee, to fond remembrance bring The vanished hours of life's enchanting spring; Short calendar of joys for ever fled! Thou bid'st the scenes of childhood rise to view, The wild wood-path which fancy loves to trace; Where, veil'd in leaves, thy fruit of rosy hue Lurk'd on its pliant stem with modest grace. But ah! when thought would later years renew, Alas, successive sorrows crowd the space! " Shaped and red like a heart, the strawberry has long been a symbol of love pleasure. In 18th century's France, women's nipples were called "fraises", which led to the expression “aller aux fraises” (going to the strawberries) as a synonym for flirting /searching a place to make love. One symbolic interpretation is also promiscuity, because of the multiple seeds (it's also the only fruit with seeds on the outside). Wild strawberries were eaten since prehistoric times, but the strawberries we eat today are the result of a Frenchman named (coincidentaly) Amédée-François Frézier, who was sent by King Louis XIV on a reconnaissance mission to Chile. One day he found a berry that looked similar to one he knew from Europe, but way larger. Frézier packed up some of these plants back to France where they were planted among other species. The crossing of this one with another species from the new world, resulted in a hybrid that would eventually become the strawberry we know today. 'Se le cose stanno così, mi scuserete ma approfitterò di questa vostra passeggiata per andare a scrivere una lettera. Vi raggiungerò tra un quarto d'ora.' Diede un lieve bacio alla moglie e si allontanò." Honouring Roots in Regency Elegance: Meet Maruvhanga She wasn't a duchess, but she ruled our village with a quiet strength. My grandmother, Maruvhanga, rose before the sun to gather firewood and hunt for hidden treasures in the forest floor - mushrooms bursting with an earthy flavor (mushrooms). This 18th-century-inspired dress isn't just about lace and leg of mutton sleeves. It's a reimagining, a way to see Maruvhanga in a different light, her spirit woven into the delicate fabric. Each fold whispers of her resilience, and her unwavering kindness. ✨ She may not have walked grand halls, but her heart held the grace of any noblewoman. This dress is a tribute to her, a reminder that true strength and beauty come in all forms, even amidst sun-kissed fields and whispering winds. Do you have an ancestor whose story deserves a modern twist? Share their spirit in the comments! #HistoryReimagined #AfricanHeritage #HonoringGrandmothers #18thCenturyInspired #MoreThanADress #StrengthInSpirit #storytellingthroughfashion

I was at a market all weekend and while it was fun, I am so exhausted right now. But after a market is before a market and I'm already eorking on new items! Say hello to Maja, she doesn't get so much attention from us lately as devil is just so sick. #egl #kawaiiaesthetic #outfitdetails #japanfashion #instacat #redcat #eglcommunity #kawaiifashion #pastelpinkstyle #pastelstyle #romantic #rococoinspired #18thcenturyinspired #eglstyle

#fromthrifttothrill #thriftfind #upcycled #upcycledclothing #diycostume #habit18emesiecle #habit18eme #ilovevelvet #velours A year ago, i started planning a trip to France to visit , #chenonceau, #azaylerideau . I follow a bunch of amazing seamstresses and historical reenacters and decided it would be my dream come true to dress 18th century to visit my favorite chateaux. But I had only hand sewn a few hems in my life so i figured I'd help myself by semi-sewing the jacket. 😉😄 I fell in love with this $5 thrifted slate blue cotton velvet jacket and decided to transform it into an #18thcenturyinspired jacket. I'm still working on a petty coat, a bergere hat, and 18thcentury shoes...stay tuned.

View of the back of the 18th century corset. All the bonings really provide a good support to breast and bust. But that being said I'm not sure women from now will feel comfortable wearing this kind of historical undergarment if it came back into fashion. #historicalsewing #corsetmaking #historicalcorset #americanduchesspatterns #americanduchess #historicalsewing #18thcenturyinspired #18thcenturycostume #18thcentury #18thcenturydress #18thcenturyfashion #handmadecostume #historicalcostuming #historicalclothing #1800sfashion #historicaldress #historybounding #antiqueaesthetic #historicalcostumemaker #periodcostume

It took time... Time to slowdown Time to find my way again Time to think about life. Breath is coming back slowly And with it the wish to sew again. Opening my coffer of costumes My 18th century boned corset Gave me the wish of coming back here again. #americanduchess #18thcenturycostume #18thcenturycorset #historicalunderwear #bonedcorset #18thcenturyinspired #historicalsewing
