This semester has been a test of my artistic confidence, stirring doubts about my abilities and the recognition I hope to achieve. I’ve found myself wondering if I’ll ever be regarded with the same admiration as my grandfather, whose artistic legacy is widely celebrated in my family. My grandfather laid the artistic groundwork for our family, learning the craft of piñata making and honing his writing skills through workshops, ultimately publishing a book of short stories. His influence on my father’s values and principles was profound, shaping the artistic ethos passed down to me. Despite never being able to meet him I see reflections of his dreams in my own artistic journey. My grandfather’s influence on my dad was profound; his life lessons and moral guidance left a lasting impact. My dad instilled in us the importance of distinguishing between simply doing what’s right and being a genuinely good person. I wish I could convey to him how much alike we are and how I am fulfilling his hopes of becoming an artist. Sadly, I no longer have the opportunity to share these sentiments with him; stopped seeing him four years ago. Despite our tumultuous beginning, I still have my mom by my side. As a single mother, she had to be firm with us, which sometimes made me fear becoming like her. Initially, I only saw her as an angry figure who wouldn’t compromise. However, she has since transformed into my best friend, and I am proud to be her daughter. Witnessing her willingness to change and improve our relationship is truly inspiring, I finally have the relationship I always wanted from her; though it saddens me that she didn’t experience the same support from her own mother. My bond with my grandmother was always strong; as a child, I sought refuge in her presence, feeling safe and secure. She was the one person my mother couldn’t argue with. Despite facing hardships in her own upbringing, she raised her children to be self-sufficient in the best way she knew how. It wasn’t until the arrival of grandchildren that she softened, though still selectively. As I grew older, I recognized how fortunate I was to have her support.

A school of fish, ready to be strung up into colourful mobiles. I used to make these papier-mâché fishon a regular basis when I was on the craft fair circuit in the UK. Now I focus almost exclusively on mapmaking, but occasionally I make a new batch of fish as a bit of therapy. I love the process of choosing colours and patterns that work well together. IMPROMPTURLUTUTU Sculpture en cartons, tubes, grillage, papier mâché, peinture acrylique, texte et mapping Avril 2024, projet de résidence de 3 semaines à @la_fileuse_reims Création d'une mythologie instrumentale, inspirations entre Boris Vian et Rémy Bricka, et dans les oreilles, les albums de Lucky Chops, Sophie Alour, Hiromi ou les podcasts de binge audio. Le turlututu chantait sou-ba, plus bas que bas. Professionnel du bavardage et de la fanfaronnade, il faisait trembler les pavés par ses airs graves, bétons bien bas. En contrepoint, sa voix de tête, fluette, piccolant une vinasse blanche pointée, en deux-deux, pulsation à la blanche, buvait les paroles du sujet et les imitait en canon. Le souffle court, fugue, mais est retenu et enrichi par une harmonie du pavillon qui s'ouvrait comme un papillon, wings swingant, sans envolée lyrique pour autant, ce n’est pas un chanteur d’opéra. Mais peu importe, ça lui embouchune sans faire touger l'autre. Plongé.e dans au chœur de sa peau cuivrée, on pouvait entendre le murmure des pistons, complètement marteaux, tandis que son cœur tambourinait dans sa cage thoracique sur un rythme de boogie, et les baguettes balayant la bagatelle, se demandant to be or not to be-bop : elles ont fini par plier bagage, contre-basse et toute attente, contretemps et pétrie, contre-maître et Dieu. En effet, le turlututu se prenait un peu pour un dieu avec sa si belle anche qui clouait le bec aux plus beaux oiseaux, commençant à perdre pédales et pieds sur sa planche à claquette, sur laquelle il polkait la percussion, ça faisait jazzer. Alors qu’il avait la tête dans une partition trop alambiquée, une fausse note l’a perdu dans le sens de la mesure : il n’avait plus la forme, ternaire et tempo paumé, l’arrosoir à notes s’est retrouvé portées trempées, solfège effrayé, papier mâché et ingurgité. Figé pour l’éternité, l’orchestre sur pattes a patiné. Depuis, des lierres de nuances s’y déposent et grimpent au gré de ses vagues à l’âme, impromptues et cadence rompue. 1 à 4 - en plein jour 5 - le texte tout en nuances 6 - extrait du mapping 7 - test de mapping vers minuit 8 à 10 - en pleine nuit #papiermache #acrylic #mapping
