For sale, a beautiful 18th century quilted petticoat. The skirt is made from lightweight silk which shines a very subtle blue / green tone. It has an extremely fine inner layer of wool and a course linen lining. The quilting is entirely hand sewn, the motifs around the hem look to depict clover shaped leaves. The skirt would have originally been pleated to linen ties however a silk waistband has been added In the 19th century and the skirt has been unpleated and instead gathered to the waistband which fastens with hooks and bars. There are some marks and small stains to the silk as well as some fraying around the hem but generally the silk is in very sturdy condition considering how fine it is. A very beautiful piece of 18th century textile and a perfect for displaying under a gown. Please dm for details. #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturycostume #18thcenturydress #18thcenturypetticoat #1770sfashion #georgiandress #georgianstyle #antiquetextiles #antiquecostume #antiquequilt #antiqueembroidery #quiltedpetticoat #antiquepetticoat #petticoat #antiqueskirt #robealafrancaise #robealanglaise #1700sdress #18thcenturyquilt

Alright, here's a piece from my portfolio, an attempt at designing a book cover for Voltaire's Candide. I myself enjoy the book quite much (despite of it's flaws). Designing the characters from it was so much fun. I also packed this full of small references, but I don't know if I'll have the time to make a post explaining them, so if you're curious about them, you can hit me up in dms. Characters: Top Left: Cacambo, Candide's valet Bottom Left: Professor Pangloss, educator of Candide Middle: Candide, protagonist Top Right: Younger Baron of Thunder-ten-Tronckh, brother of Cunégonde Bottom Right: Cunégonde, Candide's love interest (despite being alluded to being cousins, ew) (Also, Anette P. is not my real name, if you're wondering) #voltaire #voltairecandide #candide #candideouloptimisme #18thcentury #rococo #rococostyle #rococofashion #18thcenturyfashion #historicalfashion #myart #thisisanewtagforartists #smallcreator #smallcreatorstogether #hobbyartist #characterdesign #character #fanart #idontknowwhattotag #idontknow

It's finally here! I have been getting SO MANY back in stock requests for this dress, and the wait is finally over 🎉 Actually, we've never had this dress in stock before, so to say it's back in stock is sort of misleading. Previously, we offered this dress exclusively in silk chiffon, but we wanted to bring it back as a more affordable option. This fabric is polyester, but the touch and feel of this fabric is still so lightweight and soft, you won't know the difference! This is our Lilac Chiffon Chemise, and it will be available as a limited edition item until it sells out! #historicalfashion #historicalcostuming #18thcenturyfashion #renaissancefestival #renaissancefaire #cottagecore #cottagecoreaesthetic #cottagecorestyle #fairytale #fairycore

Big hair don't care 💇 Swipe for more images ➡ Big hair was a big deal in late eighteenth-century Europe. Marie Antoinette of France led the way with towering hairstyles decorated with flowers, jewels, and on one memorable occasion, miniature ships! ⛵ Despite what many people think, women rarely wore wigs. Instead, their very skilled and very well paid hairdressers worked with the woman's natural hair, using powder, padding and horse hair to create these incredible hair sculptures. These extravagant powdered hairstyles were a major status symbol, requiring hours of work and in-demand hairdressers who could command huge salaries. French hairdressers or 'friseurs' were seen as the best of the best. Queen Charlotte even brought her French hairdresser with her when she moved to England in 1761 to marry George III. What do you think of these styles? Jeremiah Meyer. Sarah Siddons (1755-1831), c. 1783. Watercolour on ivory. Oval: 9.0 cm high. Photo: Kunstmuseum der Stadt Winterthur, Inv. K308, thanks to @miniaturenkmw This wonderful portrait was probably painted when Meyer spent a few days in Bath in 1783, where he met up with his friends William Hayley, William Long, a Mr Arnold and the actor John Hendersen. In addition to several dinners, cultural events were also on the programme. One of these was a visit to the Old Orchard Street Theatre to see the famous actress Sarah Siddons in the role of ‘Jane Shore’. William Hayley found Sarah Siddons so outstanding that it can not be describe by words. Meyer was also deeply impressed and presumably painted this very beautiful portrait of the excellent actress. Meyer portrayed his sitter with a large veil around her hair, which almost gives the actress the dramatic expression of her profession. However, the face is painted much more softly than is usually the case with other paintings of Sarah Siddons. The execution of the clothing is also marvellous. A white ribbon decorated the decollete and forms a beautiful contrast to the dress, which is otherwise painted in antique pink. Meyer has obviously kept the colours subtle; occasionally the portrait looks like a coloured drawing. The painted hand with which the sitter supports her head is rather rare. Meyer's sketchbooks contain several studies for precisely this position. Anatomically perhaps not entirely successful, but this gesture nevertheless lends the actress a noble expression. Otherwise, Meyer's painting technique is excellently recognisable for this period. The reverse shows a sihouette of the actress framed with blue enamel, made by John Miers (1756-1821). #sarahsiddons #jeremiahmeyer #portraitminiature #joshuareynolds #portraitminiatures #miniatureportrait #miniatureportraits #18thcenturyportrait #18thcenturypainting #portraitpaintings #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturystyle #18thcentury #18thcenturyart #rococo #rococostyle #rococoart #rococco #roccoco #portrait #portraiture #jewellerylover #18thcenturyjewellery #watercolorpainting #georgianportrait #georgianportraitminiature #georgianportrait

For textile lovers: . Chintz (from the Hindi ‘chint’ meaning ‘variegated’) was originally produced in the Dutch settlements on the Coromandel coast of India in early 18th century. Eastern patterns were adapted to suit European fashion and exported by the Dutch East India Company. Subsequently new printing techniques were developed in Europe allowing the original designs to be reproduced, putting an end to imports from India. In Amsterdam alone there were eighty printers of chintz in 1750! . This wonderful blouse was created around 1810 and is displayed at the Rijksmuseum. . . . . @rijksmuseum #antiquetextiles #chintz #heritagetextiles #textiles #patterndesign #surfacedesign #18thcenturyfashion #dutchhistory #rijksmuseum #19thcenturyfashion

On a recent visit to @strawbhillhouse I spotted some 18th century fashion, as they had these fabulous pockets on display! 🍓 Pockets would have been tied round the waist over the rump. They were the 18” century equivalent of a handbag and could be reached through long slits in the petticoats and skirts of the dress. Made from linen, wool or cotton and sometimes embroidered, they needed to be robust as they would be used to hold small personal items such as money, jewellery, and a pincushion. Bodices where commonly held together with pins. The pockets on this model are embroidered with a design based on the Strawberry Hill balustrade 🍓🎀 . . . . . . #strawberryhillhouse #fashionhistory #18thcenturyfashion #fashion #historicalfashion #18thcentury

Thank you to friends and followers for all the comments to my last post, about the mini-sackback gown workshop I taught in Edinburgh. This workshop was “continued professional development” for @nationaltrustforscotland staff and volunteers, to get everyone ready for the “Ramsay & Edinburgh Fashion” exhibition opening at @nts_georgianhouse in June. I thought I’d just give you a quick run down of how this workshop was structured. Everyone was paired up with a buddy, to make one of the half scale gowns between them. I prepared everything in advance, with the fabrics all cut out and in some cases pinned together ready for stitching. With my own set of pieces to demonstrate and teach, I prepared everything for 6 little gowns including stomachers but not including petticoats. Day 1: Seaming up (pinned) sleeves, assembling and stitching the stomacher, seaming up the centre back of the bodice lining, felling down the small dart in the front bodice pieces. Day 2: Pleating the backs of the gowns, laying in the back lining piece and stitching it all together, building the bodice fronts including simplified versions of folded robings. Day 3: We only had the morning for sewing. Knowing that no one would get their gowns completely finished today, I did a continuous demonstration of everything still to be done, with everyone taking notes and/or taking photos and videos. This included: setting and stitching the side seams, pleating the skirts at the hips and setting in the sleeves. No one needed to know *everything* but everyone needed exposure to the full range of stitches and seaming techniques. various stages of construction. When we make the full size gown (on one of the volunteers as a model), everyone needs to feel confident that they will recognise what is put into their hands to sew, even if they need to ask a few questions to remember exactly what they’re meant to do with it! As I think you can see, I love teaching 18th century gown making! . 📷Leia Caldwell and myself . #18thCenturyFashion #HistoricalDressmaking #EveryInchHandStitched #LongSackGown #Workshop #Museum #Training #LearnThroughReconstruction #RecreativePractice #Timesmith
