Released on this day in 2006. “Stadium Arcadium” is the 9th studio album from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album produced 5 singles: “Dani California,” “Tell Me Baby,” “Snow (Hey Oh),” “Desecration Smile” and “Hump de Bump,” along with the 1st ever fanmade music video for the song “Charlie.” In the US, the album became the band’s 1st #1album. Anthony Kiedis has stated that Stadium Arcadium was originally meant to be a trilogy of albums released 6 months apart, but it was eventually condensed into a double CD, with the vinyl release a 4 disc set. The album is also the group’s last to feature guitarist John Frusciante, until his return a few years ago. This is an excellent album top to bottom. To have it on vinyl is awesome. To me this release is the “swan song” for the band. Without Frusciante, they will never meet my standards. Recently announced that he’s back in the band but it’s to be seen if they’ll record again. The album received 7 Grammy Award nominations in 2007. According to Kiedis The band originally wanted to create an “old-fashioned Meet the Beatles-like record,” and to keep the number of songs down to about 12, to make “a small, digestible piece of art.” They ended up writing 38 new songs, with Rick Rubin producing all tracks. Side note; Billy Preston guests on the clavinet for the song, “Warlocks.” Storm Thorgerson, known for providing album artwork for bands including Pink Floyd, T. Rex, Audioslave, and many others, was asked to create the cover art. He provided at least 3 possible covers for the album, but his ideas were rejected and the simple cover you see was used instead. Thorgerson publicly denounced the chosen artwork, saying, “It was trite, dull and derivative completely unlike the music, which was colorful, eclectic, imaginative, positive, and endlessly inventive.” #redhotchilipeppers #stadiumarcadium #rhcp

Great picture of @giorgiomoroder from last nights @grammymuseum panel on the @brooklynsudano documentary about her mother @officialdonnasummer - they showed some amazing clips and even talked in depth about Donna's first #1 single #macarthurpark 45 years ago which was the first time an artist had the #1album and single simultaneously. I was going to ask about the beautiful #suite that is the 4th side of #liveandmore but it seemed too small of a question after the interview and clip about the song itself. But for me it was my entry point to Donna, Giorgio and disco music in general. 45 years ago I was 18 and invited to go to a disco for the first time with friends from work. They made it pretty clear they didn't a kid hanging around them but that we would meet on the dance floor at midnight to dance as a group to MacArthur Park. The only Donna Summer record in my house at that time was my sister's 7" version of MP she used for her drill team routine. I really liked it (and the flip side, a live version of "Once Upon a Time") but it seemed odd to me that we would all get together for a 4 minute song and how did they know it would be played at midnight. As I sat on the balcony watching all the dancers seem to move in some kind of symmetry I wondered how I could ever do such a thing. I felt so self-conscious. Then the music stopped and the floor went pitch black. I heard a slow piano tune begin and, although it wasn't the MacArthur Park I knew, my watch said midnight so I knew it was time. By the time I got onto the dance floor people were slow dancing and I couldn't imagine how I would join in. And just as I found my group in the middle of the floor that amazing voice began to wail "oh noooo" and the beat dropped and the lights began swirl and I was literally taken by the music and I began to move with abandon much to the amusement of my co-workers but by that time I didn't care. "I will take my life into my hands and I will use it" The next day a friend played me the record and I fell in love with Donna. I went to buy her other records and found them all to be concept albums with album-side suites telling stories of love, life, the past and future.
