4/17/24: American White Pelicans at Lock and Dam 21. The large group of White Pelicans were sunning themselves on the Missouri side of Lock and Dam 21. I can’t be sure, but it appears as if the smaller group, just off the face of the dam, are in the midst of a feeding frenzy. American White Pelicans live on the coasts of the U.S. as well as lakes and rivers throughout the interior of the country. They are annual migrants in Illinois, usually arriving in May and staying until September and October. Their autumn migration takes them to wintering grounds as far west as northern California and as far south as the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. They are strong fliers, alternating flapping and gliding, soaring on thermals like hawks during migration at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. They migrate in “V” formation, soaring to great heights. In Illinois, White Pelicans have been observed migrating in flocks that number in the hundreds to thousands. 4/17/24: You know it’s windy when there’s whitecaps on the Mississippi. I took a semi-short break from working in the yard to look for some White Pelicans, and came away with a bit more than that. Between Lock and Dam 21 and Bob Bangert Park, there were White Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, Blue-winged Teal, Mallards, Bald Eagles, Turkey Vultures, and Canadian Geese. Prima vlinderweer dit weekend. De wind waaide ze zo voor de lens. Vandaag eindelijk even tijd om wat de doen aan tellingen, maar ze zaten natuurlijk vooral in de luwte. The sunspots, each larger than the earth, are 92.96 million miles or one AU (149,597,870,700 meters) away. 3/11/24: Bell 407 Air Evac Lifeteam 38/ MU 4 from Kirksville, MO. Just over three years ago, Air Evac Lifeteam 38 in Kirksville transitioned to MU 4 and integrated into the University of Missouri Air Medical Services Program. For a while this afternoon, Lifeteam 38 from Kirkland, MO and Lifeteam 5 from Quincy, IL were both flying the skies over Quincy. It was the closest thing I’ve had to an air show in some time. 😏 Air Evac Lifeteam is the leading provider of emergent air medical transportation services, operating more than 150 helicopter air ambulance bases across 18 states. 3/7/24: Historic St. Rose of Lima is significant both for its architecture and as an important north side landmark, a mixture of architectural styles best described as Venetian Gothic Revival. St. Rose was dedicated In 1912, and closed in 2005 during a local Catholic downsizing. Most of its contents, other than the original pews and historic 1912 Wicks organ, were moved to another church or sold. St. Rose of Lima has the largest collection of stained glass within the Springfield diocese. St. Rose was designated a historic landmark in 2000, which helped save the stained glass from being sold off. In 2007, after petitions from local Catholics, Bishop George J. Lucas gave permission to re-open the church for the Traditional Latin Mass. Thousands of volunteer hours went into preparing the church, rectory and church hall, as well as having the stained glass professionally cleaned and refurbished. 3/7/24: Historic St. Rose of Lima is significant both for its architecture and as an important north side landmark, a mixture of architectural styles best described as Venetian Gothic Revival. St. Rose was dedicated In 1912, and closed in 2005 during a local Catholic downsizing. Most of its contents, other than the original pews and historic 1912 Wicks organ, were moved to another church or sold. St. Rose of Lima has the largest collection of stained glass within the Springfield diocese. St. Rose was designated a historic landmark in 2000, which helped save the stained glass from being sold off. In 2007, after petitions from local Catholics, Bishop George J. Lucas gave permission to re-open the church for the Traditional Latin Mass. Thousands of volunteer hours went into preparing the church, rectory and church hall, as well as having the stained glass professionally cleaned and refurbished. 3/2/24: High 60’s today, 79 (!!) on Sunday, and 68 with thunderstorms on Monday. It was time to break out the hose and water everything like Grandpa Ferguson used to, in sections, while sitting on a folding metal chair. Also set out and filled up a couple birdbaths, which our feathered friends much appreciated. There was quite a commotion for a while and, of course, I didn’t have a camera as I was in the midst of watering roses, butterfly bushes, tulips, hyacinth, etc. Still a bit of activity, including a tree squirrel who was surprised by my appearance. BTW, when we put up our privacy fence last Fall, the workers had to cut down the neighbors hedge. It was okay with him as it was an overgrown mess, but it was home to a good number of the sparrows out back.
