It’s dandelion season again which means it’s time for homemade dandelion honey 😁 it’s a monofloral honey made with just dandelions and is completely vegan 🍯 Globally we as a society only eat around 200 available plant species (a lot less if you venture into supermarkets) out of the 300,000 edible species, that’s means we are only using 0.07% of what is available to us. We have lost our connection to nature and the world around us, we’re not benefiting from the endless amounts of plants we could be consuming. I encourage anyone to do some research, get a book and look into foraging 😁✌🏻 However, be (see what I did there ;) sure to only collect a few dandelions from different areas and only collect what you need to ensure there remains enough for pollinators and to help maintain a corridor of food for them ✌🏻🐝

Exciting! Another new solitary bee in the orchard. I believe this is a female Short-fringed mining bee. A very good pollinator due to its long hairs, which can take even more pollen from flower to flower as the bee enjoys the nectar. They have two generations so you can see them in spring and summer and have short tongues so plants like dandelions, willow, brambles, thistles, umbellifers and fruit flowers are very important to them. Mining bees need undisturbed soil to make their burrows in so the orchard is a perfect habitat. With such a wide variety of pollinators out there, it's important to learn more about some of the less common and charismatic insects that do a lot of good work! While everyone is familiar with big ol' bees like the carpenter bee pictured in the first image, a lot of other native bees get a bad rap, like this much smaller native mining bee found on a blueberry bush in picture 2. Mining bees do not make honey, and instead just eat nectar or collect pollen to feed their young; many mining bees are highly specific in which plants they choose nectar from, with some types of mining bee gathering nectar from only one species of plant! This is another great reason to plant a wide variety of natives in the garden. The insect in the third picture is a longhorn beetle found on a dogwood flower, and as adults, these beetles feed on different flower parts, including nectar, but also including pollen and sometimes the flower itself. Since they travel to many flowers over time searching for food, they can also do a great job pollinating. Finally, the insect in the last picture is a leaf-footed bug, and is a member of the True Bug order of insects, Hemiptera. These bugs have piercing mouth parts, which you can see here piercing a developing dogwood flower, to suck the juices out of plant parts. Too many bugs on one plant can cause damage, like may be seen with squash bugs on cucumber plants, but a few here and there can also provide a great service in terms of pollinating; you can see these hemipteran covered from head to toe in a fine layer of pollen already, and once it takes off searching for more food, that pollen will spread to other flowers over time! #nativeplants #nativeplantsofnorthamerica #nativeplantsofmaryland #savethebees #beetles #bugs #pollinator #pollinators
