SATURATION III by BROCKHAMPTON ▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎ BLIGATORY Rating: 80.3/100 Team Score: 78.3/100 Community Score: 82.3/100 (50 Votes) ▪︎▪︎▪︎ The first two thirds of the SATURATION trilogy dropped during the end periods of spring and summer respectively, which for many aren’t far apart. A lot of people class June as part of summer anyway, as its solstice starts then. So to cap the trilogy off on the brink of winter instead of autumn goes to show that SATURATION III not only feels different in context, but was made differently, too. ‘BOOGIE’ and ‘SISTER’ are the only high-velocity tracks on this one - everything is fairly tame and tempered, with the occasional upbeat chorus (‘ZIPPER’) or thrilling hook (‘STUPID’). The beats whir and flow, rather than leap and punch. I must speak on BROCKHAMPTON for a moment… This group did a lot for me over the last two years or so. I am saddened by their conclusion to split as a collective unit, although I’m sure it is for the best. Now we will see their solo careers blossom. I remember listening to these guys for the first time back in 2020. I had just moved in to my own apartment when I began to work my way through the Saturation trilogy. I was moved by the raw authenticity, the emotional pull, the sheer energy these guys displayed as a group. Early 2021 I was transitioning into “iridescence” and “ginger” right before “roadrunner: new light, new machine” was released. Finishing up my studies at Simpson College, getting into a relationship at the time, changes were happening so suddenly. I always felt like their music was teleporting me to somewhere I had never been. Their music elevated my growth at that particular time. I was getting closer to who I truly was as a result. It was my last year at Simpson, chasing a Sports Communications degree. One of the last classes I took was my second semester doing work for the Simpsonian. I wrote an article for BH and their upcoming album - https://thesimpsonian.com/31565/opinion/why-we-needed-a-new-brockhampton-album-to-jolt-us-awake-in-2021/ Because of one of my passions; speaking about music, I realized as I was writing the article, it didn’t feel like an assignment to me. It felt natural, like the words I held in my head flowed to the typing of my fingers on the keyboard with ease. This group had a creative hustle like I had never seen before. It’s no surprise their music impacted so many people, including myself. I find that in deep contemplation while writing this that pure nostalgia has captured my imagination. My life has improved by hearing BH’s music. Thank you for giving us a show we couldn’t stop watching for the last 5 years.
