The succession of 'obas' of Benin exerted powerful control over all affairs of the Edo kingdom and between them commissioned hundreds of commemorative plaques. By the early 17th century, plaques were higher in relief, and the figures look straight out at the viewer. They are usually rendered in social perspective, meaning that the more important people appear larger than the lesser individuals. In this example from c.1600, a court priest is shown severing the head of an animal, a sacrifice for the obas royal ancestors. You are warmly invited to the opening of our newest group exhibition “Gléhoué – Home of the earth” on Saturday May 25th starting at 3:30 PM. “Gléhoué – Home of the earth” is the first exhibition in a new series exploring the diversity of African contemporary art. This series seeks to show a glimpse of the vast diversity in contemporary art from Africa by visiting artists in various countries or regions of the continent, starting with four artists from Benin. Marcel Kpoho (1988) creates his own black universe populated by sculptures from recycled tyre slices. In this exhibition we present a series of his masks, some relating to his contemporary interpretation of indigenous deities. Tchif Tchiakpe (1973) is a master colourist, who is internationally well-recognized for his abstract works. In this exhibition he shows his new figurative abstract painting style. Elise Takoudagba (1978) makes colorful, detailed ceramics about the traditional Vodoun religion, including egungun masked figures. Rafiy Okefolahan (1979) shows colorful expressionist paintings, populated with faces, symbols and signs. This pendant mask was created in the early sixteenth century for an Oba named Esigie, in honor of his mother Idia. The face has softly modeled, naturalistic features, with graceful curves that echo the oval shape of the head. Four carved scarification marks, a number associated with females, indicate her gender.The hollow back, holes around the perimeter, and stopper composed of several tendrils of hair at the summit suggest that the mask functioned as an amulet, filled with special and powerful materials that protected the wearer. . It’s taking a bit longer than expected but as the say goes, good things take time. That being said, we can’t wait to receive our precious cargo, containing the interstellar sculptures by critically acclaimed visual artist, Charly D’Almeida. D’Almeida, whose practice is based in Cotonou, Benin, is an artist concerned with the notions of modern world in peril, yet one that could still be salvaged. In his work, D’Almeida aspires to transfigure the human experience through a creative process that involves molding, forging and amalgamating various scraped metal parts and recycled materials. By way of repurposing, recomposing and reconstituting these fragments of our humanity, the artist pioneers a visual narrative that is all together bold, intricate and thought provoking. Toundé AHOUANGNIMON effectue sur 3 ans (2020-2023) une formation en Design graphique à Africa Design School qui lui permet de penser l’identité graphique visuelle de particuliers ou d’entreprise puis de la réaliser. Cela lui permet aussi d’exercer dans la communication d’entreprise. En 2023, il effectuera une alternance à l’Hôtel MAISON ROUGE où, en plus de travailler sur les supports visuels et faire du Community Management sur la page Instagram du Boutique Hôtel, il parcourait régulièrement les oeuvres présentes. Cette immersion dans ce lieu lui a permis de comprendre les techniques professionnelles utilisées. Toundé en plus d’avoir accompagné des personnes dans le bien-être, le développement de soi en France et à Cotonou s’est rendu compte que son parcours atypique pouvait aussi lui ouvrir des portes dans le monde de l’art. Semi basketteur professionnel en France et aux États-Unis (2014–2017), il a depuis 2013 été au contact de thérapeutes divers, ce qui a forgé son identité. D’origine béninoise, Stanley KPOKPOYA est un artiste pluridimensionnel. Il s’initie de façon autodidacte et avec le coeur, à l’art plastique. Titulaire d’un BST (Basic Safety Training), Stanley KPOKPOYA a mené une carrière de marin au sein du plus grand bateau hôpital, MERCY SHIP où il évolue aux titres d’Assistant au Service Matériel et ravitaillement, professeur bénévole de cours de peinture, superviseur aux activités techniques et bien d’autres. Cette expérience lui a valu une belle ouverture sur le monde et sur différentes cultures, ce qui a nourri sa créativité et sa passion pour la peinture et la photographie qui représente un second talent avéré. Initiated by King Agonglo the 8th - one of the greatest patrons of artisanship in the history of ancient Dahomey, today’s Benin - the ateliers of Agonglovo - meaning in Fon language "weaved by the hand at the palace of King Agonglo" - became renowned throughout West Africa for their unparalleled weaving technique, and for ultimately revolutionizing the structural components of the traditional weaving table. During his reign (1789-1797), King Agonglo helped nurture some of the best skilled artisans the empire has ever seen. Today, the very descendants of these master weavers continue to perpetuate this legacy inside the same ateliers, located in the at the heart of the royal palace, a monument now inscribed by UNESCO on the list of Humanity’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Archeology of Time In his creative practice, the Beninese sculptor Epaphras Toïhen formulates an aesthetic that echoes not only to primordial archetypes such as purity and intemporality but confronts us with the notions of finality, the passing of time and memory preservation and the role of humanity in relations to nature and the cosmos. Toïhen carves exclusively from sustainably sourced stumps of Teak trees, that have never been cut by the hands icc de men. The sacred wood of these naturally fallen trees gradually became buried under Earth’s mantle. Like an archeologist, Epaphras Toïhen excavates these precious kernels, which he believes are nature’s most sacred archives, a database log of sorts, recording countless forgotten human stories. One benefit of visiting an art museum multiple times is you wander through galleries you may have missed on a one-time visit. I few weeks ago, I found these incredible Benin bronzes at the MFA Boston. They depict war scenes, ceremonial gestures, and musicians of the Benin Empire in the 1500s. Benin traded pepper, cloth, and enslaved people with Portugal, Netherlands, England, and France for bronze, firearms, and coral. They also created ivory pieces for Renaissance Europe.
