Last night, the SisterOfMyHeart and PsychologistOfThePeople, Dr. Dawn Crosson, held the 90s Night of Elegance Annual Fundraiser for the Central PA Center for Trauma and Healing (CCTH). CCTH is a program of the Harrisburg Area Learning Academy (HALA). Dr. Crosson leads these programs to ensure the needs of the underserved in our community are met. As she states in the video clip, DrDawn eschews the white patriarchal "I'm OK, you're not OK" approach to treatment. Instead, she chooses to be judgement-free, which fosters a sense of safety and of being heard with those she serves. I invited friends to join me at the gala this year, and we had big fun! Thanx to @gina_finley, @thatbonnergirl @prod2bme @granmom54, Dereasha, Sheila, and the always classy, always gracious Miss Sonja for making the evening even better than I could imagine! We were educated by trauma survivors who shared their harrowing experiences with us, as well as how they were supported by CCTH. One shared that Dawn advised their motto was You Didn't Ask For Trauma, Why Should You Have To Pay For It? There were good eats including prime rib, 90s music that kept the dancefloor full, laughter, catching-up--the usual good, clean, country fun! And it wasn't EZ getting to the venue due to a prom being held at the same time, OMG the traffic on UDR and EPD was SRO, and the parking lot was a hot mess! But we stuck with it, we were not quitters! Thanx to the nice man that procured for me what seemed to be the last available space in the rear parking lot! Pics of our table, me with the hostess, me with the LadyInRed, Babe, and HerMommy, the lovely Miss Sonja, a group shot of the NCBW Coalition Sisters present, and me shaking my a$$! Thanx Gladiola, for sneaking that in on me! Thanx VickiVale, for all of your perfect pics, you always do a bang-up job!đŸ“·đŸ“ž #MentalHealthServices #Trauma #TraumaServices #TraumaTherapist #BlackMentalHealth #BlackMentalHealthMatters #GetYouSomeTherapy #YouNeedIt #WeAllDo #JudgementFreeZone #TraumaSurvivors #Healing #BlackPsychologists

Today, as I stand on the threshold of receiving my Doctor of Psychology, (PsyD) degree, I can’t help but be overwhelmed by the journey that brought me here. Growing up in an environment where higher education, especially doctorate degrees, seemed like distant dreams, this moment is a testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief in the power of education. I remember the doubters, the moments of self-doubt, and the challenges that seemed insurmountable. But through it all, there was a flicker of hope, a spark of ambition that refused to be extinguished. With each obstacle, I grew stronger, more determined to defy the odds stacked against me. Today isn’t just about receiving a degree; it’s about breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and proving that where you start doesn’t dictate where you end up. It’s a celebration of every late-night study session, every sacrifice made, and every ounce of perseverance poured into this journey. To my professors, friends, and family who believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself, thank you. Your unwavering support and encouragement fueled my determination and kept me moving forward, even when the path seemed daunting. As I embark on the next chapter of my life, armed with knowledge, experience, and a heart full of gratitude, I carry with me the responsibility to pay it forward, to inspire others to reach for their dreams, no matter how audacious they may seem. Today, I proudly stand as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of education. This degree isn’t just mine; it’s a victory for every person who dared to dream beyond their circumstances. Here’s to new beginnings, endless possibilities, and the belief that with perseverance and passion, anything is possible. đŸŽ“đŸ’« #DreamsComeTrue #FirstGenGraduate #PsyD #DoctorateDegree #Doctorate #Psychology #SchoolPsychology #BlackLiveMatter #BlackPsychologists #BlackAndEducated Photographer: @ayothomas

Our approach to Black mental health is inspired by this legacy, offering a sanctuary for healing that honors the strength and wisdom of our forebears. I am proud to say that my knowledge lineage traces back to the Association of Black Psychologists @nationalabpsi an organization that champions the mental well-being of the Black community. Their work reminds us that understanding and healing cannot be one-size-fits-all and that our identities deeply influence our mental health journeys. đŸŒ± For anyone looking to support or learn more about Black mental health, I highly recommend diving into the resources provided by the Association of Black Psychologists (especially read articles in the Journal of Black Psychology) and the Loveland Foundation @thelovelandfoundation and Boris L. Henson Foundation @blhensonfoundation . They are treasure troves of knowledge, offering support and guidance tailored to the unique experiences of the Black community. Let’s embrace and uplift these vital voices. Together, we grow stronger and healthier. They got me once or twice. But nope! I like good experiences, but I can be kinda cheap. I’d rather eat noodles or a salad and spend that $50 treating myself to a nice meal on a day I feel like getting out. I am too cheap for stuff that isn’t an “experience” of some kind. I also make my own to-go coffee 99% of the time. But I do go to Fluid Coffee or Starbucks and work/people watch. I get a cup of regular drip coffee with SF syrup and cream and relax. For regular coffee both places you can get a free refill! I take that to go. Balling on a budget! #centerblackjoy #blackmentalhealth #blackpsychologists

In the Autumn of 2023, I had the privilege of being interviewed by Ian Florence for the British Psychological Society “Psychologist Magazine”. I celebrate the diversity of Lifespan Psychology, and the fact that we are a team from all over the world.  To me, there is no one way of thinking or practising psychology, as convincing as CBT was for years! I like to learn from different people, cultures, translations of language, faiths and communities. I like to sit with different viewpoints, challenge my thinking and empathise with people from different walks of life. The important thing is to be culturally informed and open to these conversations. Supervision, ongoing CPD, and your own therapy are key here. In addition, it is critical that you do not deny the client’s lived experience. You start from there. To deny lived experience is to marginalise. This is the approach I use to support teams to work cross-culturally. Book a session with our team of Award-Winning Mental Health Practitioners. Divine Feminine. Within African spiritual and cultural traditions, the concept of divine femininity highlights the power, strength, wisdom, and nurturing aspects linked to female deities or archetypes like goddesses, ancestral spirits, and mythological figures, each embodying distinct attributes and roles. The divine feminine is esteemed for being a source of life, fertility, creativity, and protection. Often portrayed as a mother, healer, warrior, and guide, she symbolizes the interconnection of life and the natural world. This Woman’s History Month we intentionally uplift the works of the women of the Association of Black Psychologists, Inc. whose service to the Association continues to be a labor of love. WE LOVE YOU, SAWUBONA, and UBUNTU to all of the women named and unnamed whose light, life, and love has sustained and advanced the Association in multitude ways. Please join the DC Association of Black Psychologists’ campaign #WomenofABPsi2024 as we continue to highlight the work the women of our Association are doing within and outside of the organization. My friend and gifted psychotherapist Yvette Bailey, MSW, LCSW, who I met through my GF Majessa, threw a #DayParty today, dubbed "Winter Self-Care Old School 35 And Up Day Party." It was awesome! She started at 3:00, went on 'til 8:00. The DJđŸŽ¶ was great, played music from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Old school dances were done, including me doing #TheBump coming down the #SoulTrainLine! We did #LineDances, one that I had to learn on the dancefloor.đŸ•ș🏿Yvette spoke of the importance of doing what we like in order to keep our mental and emotional selves in check, and sometimes that is as simple as dancing, and singing along with the song.đŸŽ€ We did all of that! Congrats Yvette, on your three year anniversary as founder and CEO of #EmpoweredVisionaries!!🎉 I am proud of you, what an accomplishment! Yvette can be reached at [email protected], @empowered_visionaries and at 717-350-9193. To my GFs who purchased tix and were unable to attend--Deshawn, Vicki, Pam, Gladiola, Sharia--this isn't the last event Yvette will be hosting, we'll see you at the next one! I finally made the leap and did something I have wanted to do for almost two years!!!! I had my fake nails removed and used a dip kit I bought to do dip powder nails. I HATE getting my nails done. Pedicures are nice, but when I get my nails done it takes forever, they nick me with the drill, and it just feels like a chore! I said way back when I bought the kit that I was going to stop getting my nails done and use that money to get a massage every 4-6 weeks instead. But, I kept putting it off and being annoyed every time I had to go to the shop. I had them removed a couple times, but I would be “too busy” to learn to do them and just give up. But it has been on my mind a lot lately and suddenly, I kept losing a nail or two every single week. Like, I would get one repaired and look down and another one is broken two hours later. Fresh nails! Even Claudia said, “what’s up with your nails?” I think God was telling me to do what I really want. I want relaxing, joyful experiences in my life, not stressful ones. I have been praying for God to blow my mind and so many wonderful things have been happening. But, I have to be obedient to gentle nudges. It may seem like a small thing, but it is another step toward living fully in my soft life era. I am sooooo happy! They turned out cute and super strong. They are supposed to last for about two weeks. I hope so! #centerblackjoy #mentalhealthmatters #selfcare #blackpsychologists

This month the Psychology Club is celebrating black psychologists. Today’s featured psychologist is Mamie Phipps Clark! Mamie Phipps Clark (Born in 1917) was a social psychologist who graduated from both Howard University and Columbia University. Her research presented irrefutable evidence that segregation directly harmed the well-being of black children which continued into their adult lives. Clark’s research played a key role in the Brown v Board of Education decision which ended segregation in schools.
