3rd in the series: the black & yellow companions. I love black. And with black, I love a dash of yellow. The #travelersnotebook was crafted by @joes.venture and I can’t remember where I got the other two yellow notebooks (one is from Cairo, the other from Toronto). I use one as a by-my-night-stand random thoughts collector, and the other as my work companion for detailed to-dos. I need hyper detailed step-by-step guidance in life otherwise I get lost. The #tnpassport is my everyday-everything planner. In this picture, back in December, I was pairing it with that yellow “no strangers please” pin that I got from our annual professional conference. There were a series of pins thrown in a “for free” basket, sort of lingering artefacts of the aftermath of social distancing dos and donts. It strikes me that, since this was a conference for anthropologists, there could be a “no strangers please” pin. I like the irony of that: that even if our job is actually to study strangers we might deep down be deeply intimidated by them! ~ Back in Jan, I proudly set up a series of pictures as my new year lineup was coming together. 2nd in a series of 3: the 365 B6 Stalogy in black. 2022 had been my first year really back into *notebooking* and I had been so good at daily notes in my #mddiary (see previous post) that I became ambitious and got an additional #hobonochi with the goal to journal everyday. At first it was love at first sight: the paper, the black and discreet gold & brass touches, just about everything was addictive in this book, and so I wrote everyday. But here is the thing about The Mediocre: ain’t such thing as everyday for all-the-time. At some point, for some reason I lost the momentum. I felt less and less likely to reopen the Hobonichi because every missing page would judge any page I would now set out to write. By the end of 2023, sadly, I had about completely abandoned the beloved Hobonichi. When 2024 came around I learned from that lesson and moved into a #stalogyb6, set it up with the same discreet dashes of brass, just as a little black suit paired with a wrist watch, ready to go. I have used Stalogys for a long time, and always loved them, they are my go to when in doubt. I wanted a B6 because a A6 would feel too constraining but a A5 too imperial. I love that it is pre-dated enough for me to use it as a journal, but with room to write pretty much whenever I want, how little or how much I want. Maybe it will last 6 months, maybe it will last 2 years, but this more open-ended and less demanding approach to journaling is what works for me. ~ Back in Jan, I proudly set up a series of pictures as my new year lineup was coming together. One of the most novel aspects of the 1948 constitution was Article 37, which entitled working women the right to equal pay with their male counterparts. I've been working away on job applications and book proposal forms it's felt a bit like everyday I get up and sit at my desk, go to bed, and try again the next day. 23.04.2024 ⭐️ End of a (Boston) Era ⭐️ It has been a VERY busy few weeks! The week that I defended my dissertation I also attended two final round job interviews - the outcome of which I am very happy to announce. I signed a new job contract yesterday and so I guess it’s official: After living in Boston for 6 years I am very proud to say that I will be beginning as a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Colby College in the fall!! I will be specializing in American literature of the 20th and 21st century, particularly AFAM!!! I’m very excited to get back in the classroom - teaching has always been my favorite part of this job and I’m so looking forward to teaching my own classes and sharing my enthusiasm with a new set of students. It all feels a little surreal now - there’s been a lot of change in a short amount of time! But I’m really glad that I have a job I’m looking forward to starting lined up at this point in the process. Who would have thought that one day I would have “professor” in my job title!!!??? Can you even believe it!!! I’ll be sharing more about my job market experiences later this week but just wanted to share the good news today ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Is health attainable during a PhD?🤍…It’s debatable 🤍Mental toll Up to 75% of graduate students report feeling stressed, 50% feel overwhelmed, and 40% feel exhausted (1). Competition, support for students of diverse backgrounds, & mentor-mentee relationships are purported to be important contributors. Despite publications & awards, many students find that negative experiences hold more weight in academia. Embracing a growth mindset, engaging with fellow students, & establishing work-life boundaries may help protect mental health. 🤍Physical toll Time & financial resources often play a substantial role in one’s physical health. Finding time to exercise, grocery shop, & cook is challenging. Further, gym memberships & healthy foods can be costly. Depending on one’s insurance, seeing doctors for health concerns may not be financially feasible. Yet, our bodies can change tremendously during graduate study. Small efforts, like daily walks & simple cooking, can realistically help to support one’s health. 🤍Spiritual toll Spirituality is defined as being concerned with the human soul as opposed to material things. For some, this may include a relationship with a higher power. Prior research suggests that the academy encourages a separation of the head from the heart (2). Though people of diverse cultures are welcomed into academia, such an ethos encourages leaving the spiritual aspects of one’s culture behind. Taking time for the spirit each day may support identity formation, meaning-making, & health. Share with your friends, colleagues, & mentors🤍
Sometimes it takes an outside perspective… 👀 Have you introduced new systems to your team, only for them to immediately fall back into old patterns? 👀 Have you tried using a new leadership style, to no avail? 👀 Does it feel like you’ve communicated key ideas to your team, only to be ignored? 👉 Chances are your team isn’t deliberately disregarding you or your guidance. Oftentimes it takes an outsider to snap your team into focus. 🤔👩💼 🗣 The same exact idea that you’ve been trying to communicate to your team for months may click for them immediately when it’s delivered from an outside perspective.💡 It’s not an indictment of you or your leadership—it’s simple psychology. 🗣 An outsider can see what insiders cannot, like clear breakdowns in communication, generational divides, and unhealthy patterns. ✏️🚺 Women’s Writing Retreat! 🚺✏️ This week I had the privilege of co-facilitating a writing week at the gorgeous School of the Arts Library at University of Liverpool 😍 📝 What is a writing retreat? 📝 A structured day of writing for a group of people. We set out writing goals for the day, and commit to avoid distractions (email 👀) and focus. Our day was structured as ⭐️10.00 - welcome and goal setting ⭐️10.30 - focused writing ⭐️12.00 - lunchtime discussion ⭐️12.45 - focused writing ⭐️2.15 - break ⭐️2.30 - focused writing ⭐️3.30 - reflections and close ✏️ Why do academics need a writing retreat?! ✏️ Despite writing being very much part of the “day job” it is often hard to prioritise around constant teaching/admin/email demands. Blocking out a whole distraction free day (off email! 🤩) feels so luxurious, and being surrounded by other people writing away builds a sense of collective accountability to maintain focus 👀 🚺 Why women only? 🚺 This was organised through the women@Liverpool network, which is a staff network for those who feel comfortable in woman-centred spaces. A friend asked me, "So, you just count the rabies?" Referring to our contact tracing work. Essentially, yes. But it's a bit more complex. For example, if there is a suspected rabies death, we conduct an investigation and interview the family to decide whether rabies was, in fact, the cause of death or were there other possibilities. 🔺️Was the person bitten by a dog or other animal? This helps us track where the rabies is coming from 🔺️Did the person seek medical care? If so, what kind? Where? This helps us understand people's awareness and behavior when bitten 🔺️Did the person get vaccinated? Were vaccines available? This helps us inform the ministry of health officials about best practices for supplying vaccines 🔺️What was the cost of vaccines? This helps us understand if and how costs, transport, time are barriers to seeking care 🔺️Were other people bitten/exposed? In many cases, we find other bite victims and can inform/guide them to get vaccinated and wound care 🔺️Where did the biting animal come from?
