March is Women’s History Month, and the Connecticut Trolley Museum proudly celebrates women’s history year-round. Meet Kim Foscolos! She is a Certified Motorman for the Museum. She said, “It’s pretty cool when people are surprised I operate trolleys!” Volunteers are the lifeblood of our Museum, and Kim has volunteered to operate trolleys since her training five years ago. “Being part of the Connecticut Trolley Museum, and preserving trolley history, makes me very proud,” she said. Woot Woot! Connecticut Water Company has made a $2,500 contribution to the Museum to support its ongoing energy efficiency program. This follows a contribution from Cigna Healthcare that was made in 2022 and one from Berkshire Bank in 2023 for re-lamping the Museum’s buildings and installing a new heating and cooling system in the office area. More changes will be made in 2024 all aimed at reducing the Museum’s energy consumption while reducing costs. We are so excited to announce Springfield Electric Railway 16 is back in service after a year-long overhaul which includes- all the auxiliary electrical wire was replaced, a new roof, new bushings, new leaf springs and repairs to the trucks. None of this could have happened without the support from Mass Bay Railroad Enthusiasts & Amherst Railway Society. We are so grateful for the support! Additionally, a big thanks goes out to the staff and volunteers who worked on this car. In 1926, the Connecticut Trolley Museum’s beautiful No. 16 car was built by the Wason Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Mass. for the Springfield Terminal Railway of Springfield, VT. Springfield in Vermont is a manufacturing town that sits on the west bank of the Connecticut River, where car no. 16 carried passengers in Vermont and New Hampshire until the 1950s. In 1956, five years after the dissolution of the Springfield Terminal Railway, she arrived in East Windsor, CT, joining our beautiful fleet. She has lived New England history for almost a century, encompassing all four Connecticut River U.S. states. Experience moving history this Saturday! Friday Facts‼️ No. 65 is the Connecticut Trolley Museum’s first trolley car! Built in 1906 by the Wason Manufacturing Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts, she ran for the Consolidated Railway, renamed the Connecticut Company, in Norwich and Putnam, CT from 1907 until 1925, when she moved to the Hartford Division. Exhibiting Connecticut Company yellow, she dependably carried passengers between Franklin Avenue in Hartford’s South End and Windsor. May 4, 1941 saw her last passenger run; a tour through Hartford and Wethersfield. Her 1941 acquisition by the Connecticut Electric Railway Association, and arrival in East Windsor, launched our beloved Museum. No. 65 has carried Connecticut passengers for 117 years! 📍 Winterfest and the Tunnel of Lights @ Connecticut Trolley Museum - 58 North Rd - East Windsor, CT My family and I recently took a drive up to the Connecticut Trolley Museum to experience their “Winterfest and the Tunnel of Lights”. The museum is run by the Connecticut Electric Railway Association which was founded in October 1940. It is the nation’s oldest incorporated organization dedicated to the preservation of the trolley era. The museum operates a 1.5 mile heritage railroad on an original portion of the Hartford and Springfield Street Railway Company’s Rockville Branch. The museum hosts a variety of events throughout the year that are themed around dinosaurs, Easter, Halloween and Christmas. 2023 marks the museum’s 45th year hosting Winterfest. The museum and property are decorated inside and outside with over 15,000 lights. Guests have a choice of riding closed trolley cars or an open air ‘electric sleigh’ down the tunnel of lights for approximately 25 minutes. We chose the latter option, but be sure to bring plenty of layers and blankets as it can get very cold. Afterwards we headed into the Visitor Center where we saw multiple model train layouts and vintage trolleys decorated with holiday lights. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” was playing on an endless loop in the theater room while children were writing letters to Santa. Cookies, hot chocolate, and other light refreshments are available to purchase. Guests also have the option to take family photos with Santa Claus himself! Changing Times for Connecticut Transit Connecticut Co. trolley 1326 (Osgood Bradley, 1910) and Connecticut Railway & Lighting Co. bus no. 504 (GMC, 1965) are seen staged for photos at the Connecticut Trolley Museum in East Windsor, CT. The CR&L was formed in 1901 to manage the streetcar lines of the Connecticut Light and Power Co., and the CR&L lines were leased to the ConnCo from 1906-1936. East Windsor, CT. This old bridge currently connects an old farm to a used car lot. It’s possible that this bridge was part of the old trolley system in Connecticut. Located just down the road from the CT Trolley Museum. Shut down@in 1926 this line travelled east to west from Warehouse Point to Ellington (see map in post). More than likely this is just a small farm bridge but the location is right to be part of the trolley system. Winterfest On Saturday, January 21, 2023, the Connecticut Trolley Museum hosted hosted a night photo shoot featuring their collection of equipment. The museum and some of the equipment was still somewhat decorated from their "Winterfest" events, which added a nice touch to the scenes. In an impromptu shot while the event was getting underway, we see three streetcars in the museum's Kelly Barn, the warm glow of lights seeming very inviting on the rather cold night!
