Friday, October 6th we attended the Carolwood Society Unmeeting at Disney Springs. It was a fun panel including the voice actor of Mickey Mouse, Bret Iwan! We finished up the day with a stop at Hollywood Studios for dinner at Roundup Rodeo BBQ. The decor was awesome and the food was yummy and comes in an abundance! The Los Angeles Live Steamers has been around since 1956. A group of railroad enthusiasts started this museum in Griffith Park to educate the public about railroad history. Live steam displays can be seen throughout the grounds. In my home video from October 2000, a steam powered can crusher was flattening aluminum cans getting them ready for recycling. The organization offers free train rides on Sundays and a donation is appreciated. The miniature trains run on 7.5 inch (190.5 mm) gauge track, and they are big enough to have passengers ride on them. Over 1.5 miles of track traverse the whole property. For many years on Martin Luther King Jr. Day I threw a party and ran my model Lilly Belle steam train. The G-scale Lilly Belle was produced by the Hartland Locomotive Works in 2000 and was sold at the Disney parks. I bought mine at Epcot’s Art of Disney store. It sold for $595. This model was to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of Walt Disney’s Carolwood Pacific Railroad, which he ran at his home in Holmby Hills, California. There were 1500 made and it came with a certificate of authenticity, a display case, and a piece of track from Walt Disney’s backyard. The wooden base of the display case had a track attached to it for the train to rest on. The train can run on G-scale track and the headlight comes on and it blows smoke. The model is a 1:24 scale replica of Walt’s Lilly Belle engine and tender. Today I am posting a 2004 home video actually from my home, running the Lilly Belle. I have not run it in over 10 years. . Meet Olomana, a locomotive built in 1883 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA and put into service in Hawaii on a sugar cane plantation. In the 1940’s Olomana was acquired by legendary Disney animator, Ward Kimball and was restored and put into service on his “Grizzly Flats” backyard railroad where it was occasionally operated by Walt Disney. On July 19, 1999 Walt’s Barn in Griffith Park was dedicated by Diane Disney Miller. Fans of Walt Disney know that he loved trains, and the railroad held a fond place in his heart because of his memories growing up. Before Disneyland, Walt had his own personal railroad at his estate in Holmby Hills, California: the Carolwood Pacific Railroad (CPRR). Walt’s train was 1/8th scale and ran around his 5 acre residence. The name came from Walt’s street, Carolwood Drive. It had 2,615 feet of track and 11 switches. The CPRR operated from 1950 to 1953. Amongst the tracks sat Walt’s red barn where he would work on his railroad. It contained many woodworking and machine tools, some built by Walt himself. In late 1998 plans were made to relocate the barn from the Holmby Hills estate to the Los Angeles Live Steamers facility in Griffith Park. Walt was a charter member of the club, and the Disney family thought this would be a good location to preserve his train legacy. In July 1999 Walt’s Barn officially opened. . While visiting Walt’s Barn I got to see Margaret Kerry, the original model for Tinker Bell in the 1953 film Peter Pan. I also got to talk with the founder of the Carolwood Society, Michael Broggie, who is the author of Walt Disney’s Railroad Story, which he signed for me. .
