In June 1956, the Skyway opened in Disneyland as two attractions: Skyway to Tomorrowland and the Skyway to Fantasyland When originally opened, the Skyway had round buckets transporting guests over the park. These buckets only had space for two guests, limiting capacity for this prominent attraction Disney Legend Bob Gurr was asked to design new buckets with four seats instead of two, doubling the capacity. Gurr’s innovative design used lightweight ABS plastic with a steel frame, eliminated the center post and had important safety features In 1965, the new rectangular buckets replaced the original round buckets. Have you ever wondered how those whimsical Art Deco reliefs are made? ✈️As part of our program at the Disney restored Grand Central Air Terminal we will have the privilege of hearing directly from Jeff Greene, founder of @evergreene_arch_arts His company worked on high profile projects like Radio City Music Hall and more recently, the Hollywood Egyptian Theatre. John Berley, the restoration architect got so smitten with this project, he started studying aviation history of the period! Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from these two adaptive reuse heroes! If you can dream it, you can scheme it. Dad had been talking about doing the Waltland tour for YEARS. After much scheming, my sister & I managed to surprise him with the trip of a lifetime. Last Saturday I met Disney Legend, Bob Gurr and let me tell you, it was a moment I’ll never forget to the day I die. This 92 year old legend, could remember, in-detail every moment of his 27 years with Disney and years after with other studios like it was yesterday. His most notable achievements (in my opinion) being the head designer & engineer on the first monorail in America (which was installed in Disneyland). The second achievement being the creator of the “omnimover” ride system that is used in theme parks all around the globe! This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Disney Legend Bob Gurr. ❤️ Disney Imagineer and Legend @bobgurrofficial is the only remaining original Imagineer hired by Walt Disney with the task to open, design, and engineer Disneyland in 1954. Bob has created rides and attractions like the Matterhorn, the Monorail, and the Autotopia cars! We’ve all experienced his work in some capacity at the parks making his legacy so special. This experience meant so much to the little girl in me who always dreamed of becoming an imagineer. Getting to hear first hand how Bob talked about the company, Walt himself, and his time in Disney was oh so inspiring. Thank you for all the magic you’ve made and continue to make with special events like these for your fans who admire your work and you. 2/10/2024 will forever hold a special place in my heart.✨ I never in my life would have imagined meeting you, but I am forever thankful for hearing your story and our little interaction. Last night was a dream come true!! I got to meet Disney Legend @bobgurrofficial and listen to him talk Walt, Cars, Animatronics, and Life Lessons!! Growing up I made it my mission to know all there was to know about this Magical place I had once gone to called Walt Disney World. I was fascinated by the Imagineers who created the fully immersive and meticulously detailed worlds that I had longed to visit again. I watched documentaries, read books, planned fake vacations 😅 I wanted to know all that I could about the historic group of creatives that made it all possible. And of course none of it would be possible without Walt and the team of dreamers and doers at WED Enterprises. Bob Gurr has done so much for Disney Parks History and many of his creations are still running strong in the parks today! I have wanted to meet him for so long. Yesterday that dream came true! ✨ The last photo is a sticker I had on my back windshield from the moment I got my first car to the moment I had to let that car go. This was the only sticker I deemed worthy of putting on my car. If I could tell teenage me that she was going to meet and talk with Bob Gurr, inventor of the Doom Buggy, I’m not sure she’d believe me 😂 This is your sign to make those bucket lists and vision boards because dreams really do come true!! It was such an incredible experience to hear stories of Walt’s process with his teams, Bob’s experience with Disney & Universal parks and films, and his thoughts on the park attractions since his departure (he LOVES Cosmic Rewind!)
