Since 2020 The Walt Disney Company has done all they can to convince/strong arm the Oriental Land Company ((OLC)owners of Tokyo Disney Resort) to remove Splash Mountain from their park. From taking away merchandise licence, song rights and now as in 2024 Tiana’s Bayou Adventures are about to open on both coasts the pressure is mounting once again. Splash Mountain in WDW was once surveyed as the most popular ride in the world, but the best version of that ride was undeniably by all, found in Tokyo Disneyland. Unlike the parks in the USA, OLC actually take pride in their parks and maintain them to the highest level. Splash Mountain in Tokyo is like going on an as new ride each day. It is the most popular ride in Tokyo DLR, and as such you can see why the OLC are a bit hesitant to re-skin a ride to a property that doesn’t resonate with its locals, and well, let’s face it… was the death knell for 2D animation. Rumour has it that The Walt Disney Company have offered to PAY for the ENTIRE retrofit if OLC agree. I have reserved my opinion on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure until I ride it myself, but from reports of what those working on the ride and of what the ride itself contains, OLC are doing the world a favour. Of all things, I am against carbon copy attractions in each park, it’s lazy, penny pinching and lacks imagination. It also throws away the very point of having different parks if each are all eventually going to just have the same same. On that front alone, I’m hoping OLC stick to their guns and keep this, now, international treasure of a ride operating for those who miss their laughing place and wish to make pilgrimage. October again! It seems like a good time to share a few more fun things from my work on last year’s Muppets Haunted Mansion. I did the 3D modeling and printing of Miss Piggy’s “Madame Pigota” crystal ball stand for the film. It’s a faithful recreation of the version in the ride, but I made a little tweak to the original design to make it read a little clearer on camera. It has four legs instead of three to appear a bit more substantial from all angles. It’s widely reported that Disney modified a prop ship from the film “Flight of the Navigator” then used it as decor for a Tomorrowland snack stand. D-23 has reported this to be true and the ship was previously on the Backlot Tour at Disney-MGM Studios. However we’ve seen Disney quote misinformation before, there are obvious differences between the two and people who claim to have worked on it say it’s false. Frankly we don’t have the receipts to know for sure. What do YOU think?
A very pleasant surprise to run into my former Disney colleague a couple weeks ago — the amazing Vicky Todd — who casually mentioned, “I have something for you.” It was my 2nd Disney Inventor Award (for work on US Patents) — and from nearly 10 years ago!! Needless to say, it is an honor to receive this award, but I am even more touched that she had kept it for me all this time! 🥹 While it has been a hot minute since I’ve officially been an Imagineer, the spirit has never left me and it still feels like family. There are so many insanely talented folks and Inventors there who have achieved numerous patents. I am proud to say that the couple I have worked on have made it all the way to various Disneyland theme parks! After all, the Guest Experience is the reason for why we do what we do. This particular one made its way to Pandora - The World of Avatar (Florida), and is also a great example of Music-Tech, as well as how we can leverage technology to create an emotional experience. (More on that later!) 🎶🤓👾 For now, I’d like to give a shout out to my fellow Inventors on this patent: Jamie Robertson and Jonathan Becker. The Grandfather Clocks in each of the Haunted Mansion attractions are a little different. The one in Muppets Haunted Mansion is based on the Disneyland version (because it’s my favorite), and it was a fun challenge to recreate as closely as possible. I blocked it out in Fusion360 to get all the geometric shapes and proportions, and sculpted the detail in Zbrush. I bet you thought I was all out of Muppets Haunted Mansion posts! Surprise! I sculpted the mirror in Room 999 using Zbrush for Production Designer darcyeprevost. Careful observers will notice this mirror draws heavily on the design of the Hitchhiking Ghost mirrors from the ride (last photo). This, like the gate plaque, was milled in foam and painted by visionscenerycorp_. The Cinderella Castle! 🏰 Walt Disney World's Cinderella Castle is modeled after real castles from around the world and features bright pink and blue colors. The castle took 18 months to build and did you know it is entirely made of concrete, steel, and fiberglass? How much do you know about forced perspective? Forced perspective is a technique Disney uses to make structures look taller than they are in reality. Each story of a structure is built progressively smaller so that the stories appear farther away, making the building seem taller. The Cinderella Castle was built using this technique and it was my topic for a Math IA. The Cinderella Castle utilizes a geometric sequence to implement its forced perspective technique. Each story decreases by a ratio of 0.901. You can see this technique at work on the second slide. The third and fourth slides show the same, a decrease in the height of each story. The fifth slide shows what would happen if the castle were extended to infinity stories. You can see that the graph is a limit as x approaches 30. This means that if the castle were extended to infinity stories, it could only be 3.19 meters taller than it is in reality. Sometimes, the best-laid plans don’t work out—even for Walt Disney. The Ford Wonder Rotunda was among the most-visited attractions at the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair (second only to the GM Futurama II exhibit). With that success, Walt assumed his relationship with Ford would continue at Disneyland Park after the fair. Before the fair closed, Walt and his team flew up to Dearborn and made a pitch to Ford executives for a Ford attraction as part of the New Tomorrowland project set to open at Disneyland in 1967. They threw everything they could at chairman and CEO Henry Ford II—stunning concept art, an intricate model (shipped to Michigan at Walt’s expense), even a bouncy song penned by Richard and Robert Sherman (“Get the Feel of the Wheel of a Ford”). Unfortunately, all the razzle-dazzle fell flat. “Henry Ford II was not only unresponsive, he was seemingly dismissive of the value of all that Disney talent potentially available to endorse his company’s product,” Disney Legend Marty Sklar remembered. “Mr. Ford hardly seemed to be paying attention.” Rejected by Ford despite all the effort made and concessions proposed, Walt flew back to California disappointed and angry—and he expressed that anger accordingly on the flight. “That is the stupidest man I ever met!” Walt told Marty. But Walt didn’t walk away from the Ford show empty handed. After the fair closed, the dinosaurs from the Ford attraction were shipped to Disneyland and placed along the Disneyland Railroad. The Primeval World diorama opened in 1966 and still exists today. Fun fact: the Primeval World show building also doubled as the Disneyland administration building. For years, park executives had begged Walt for a proper office space. The Ford Wonder Rotunda was among the most-visited attractions at the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair (second only to the GM Futurama II exhibit). With that success, Walt assumed his relationship with Ford would continue at Disneyland Park after the fair. Before the fair closed, Walt and his team flew up to Dearborn and made a pitch to Ford executives for a Ford attraction as part of the New Tomorrowland project set to open at Disneyland in 1967. They threw everything they could at chairman and CEO Henry Ford II—stunning concept art, an intricate model (shipped to Michigan at Walt’s expense), even a bouncy song penned by Richard and Robert Sherman (“Get the Feel of the Wheel of a Ford”). Unfortunately, all the razzle-dazzle fell flat. “Henry Ford II was not only unresponsive, he was seemingly dismissive of the value of all that Disney talent potentially available to endorse his company’s product,” Disney Legend Marty Sklar remembered. “Mr. Ford hardly seemed to be paying attention.” Rejected by Ford despite all the effort made and concessions proposed, Walt flew back to California disappointed and angry—and he expressed that anger accordingly on the flight. “That is the stupidest man I ever met!” Walt told Marty. But Walt didn’t walk away from the Ford show empty handed. After the fair closed, the dinosaurs from the Ford attraction were shipped to Disneyland and placed along the Disneyland Railroad. The Primeval World diorama opened in 1966 and still exists today. Fun fact: the Primeval World show building also doubled as the Disneyland administration building. For years, park executives had begged Walt for a proper office space.
