ABC HALIFAX Designed by William R. Glen (ABC’s in-house architect) and opening in 1938, The Regal Cinema (as it was known then) opened on 19 September 1938 with Otto Kruger in “Housemaster” & Jane Withers in “Checkers”. The Regal Cinema was a particularly fine 1,938-seat cinema, with 1,250 seats in the stalls and 688 in the balcony. A shallow stage was provided and four dressing rooms. The proscenium was wide and surrounded by an elaborate plaster fretwork concealing ventilation ducts. On either side were niches containing tall slender figurines which were not dis-similar to the ‘Oscar’ statues. The cinema was tripled in 1976 (having been renamed ABC in 1961) and reopened on 12 September with 670 in screen 1, the original circle using the original unaltered screen, and 200 and 173 seats in screens 2 & 3 situated under the balcony. Renamed Cannon and then back to ABC the cinema closed suddenly in 2002 having been bought for use as a nightclub. It was designated a Grade II Listed building in 2000. This has ensured that all elements of the original (it had survived basically intact) are to be preserved. English Heritage described it as ‘Long curved stone exterior. A handsome surviving classical auditorium. One of the best of the few surviving original ABC auditoria’. However the construction of the nightclub, using the stalls area only, will effectively conceal all trace of the original design. I love going to movie theatres and this is my absolute happy place without any doubt – the Theater Tuschinski in Amsterdam. This mind-blowing piece of art was designed by Hijman Louis de Jong for Abraham Icek Tuschinski, who already had several cinemas in Rotterdam. Jaap Gidding and Pieter den Beste were responsible for the unbelievably beautiful interior. The construction lasted from 1919 to 1921 and the majestic new venue was finally opened on October 28, 1921. Tuschinski, his wife, other family members and his employees were deported to Auschwitz in 1942 and killed by the Nazis. The architect Hijman Louis de Jong was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. ODEON, HALIFAX The Halifax Odeon opened on 27th June 1938 with Errol Flynn in “The Perfect Speciman”. Designed by the architect George Coles it cost £59,727 to build. It had 1,344 stalls seats and 714 in the balcony giving a total of 2,058. A most unusual façade remains intact with three concave bays covered with buff faience tiles above the entrance each containing a convex window. The tall Art Deco style tower formerly had the Odeon lettering illuminated by neon. The cinema was not originally intended for the Odeon circuit, but was a subject to a takeover during construction, explaining the differences from the typical ‘Odeon’ style. The cinema had a wide proscenium and a stylish interior with decoration dominated by two large bas-relief female figures on the splay walls either side of the screen (now removed). Lighting was entirely indirect. The Odeon closed on 18th October 1975 with Robin Askwith in “Confessions of a Pop Performer”. Cine Italia | Escobar | Buenos Aires | Argentina 📝Construido en 1889, el Teatro Seminari rápidamente se convirtió en el centro neurálgico de la vida social escobarense: fue sede de la primera entidad mutualista del pueblo y también acogió a los recordados Cine Victoria, Cine y Teatro Italia y, en la década del 80, al Cine Gran Escobar. En 1998 la Comuna consiguió la cesión del inmueble, lo refaccionó y en junio de ese año lo reinauguró como teatro con el nombre de Tomás Seminari, en homenaje al recordado actor y vecino fallecido en 2015. 🎬Luego de años de abandono y ante el peligro de derrumbe, la gestión del intendente Ariel Sujarchuk encaró una remodelación integral. La obra, realizada en conjunto entre la Municipalidad y la empresa Consultatio, le devolvió al teatro el esplendor de su construcción original, mantuvo los lineamientos de funcionalidad y diseño, y recuperó los materiales y la estética de la época, como los pisos de pinotea, arañas, sanitarios, butacas y molduras. 👌Se removieron intervenciones anteriores y se realizaron duplicados de piezas irrecuperables o faltantes del original. Se modernizaron los sanitarios, el sistema de refrigeración, las salidas de emergencia, y se hizo a nueva toda la instalación eléctrica, respetando las tecnologías y elementos de seguridad reglamentarios. Se intervinieron la fachada, el techo, el hall de acceso, el escenario, la boletería, los camarines, la sala de usos múltiples y el exterior, además de las oficinas anexas al hall. Tuschinski cinema Amsterdam, 1921 Nog altijd de mooiste bioscoopzaal van Nederland. Ik fotografeerde Tuschinksi in 2012 voor Pathé. In 2024 zal ik er opnieuw gaan fotograferen. Theater Tuschinski werd gebouwd in verschillende stijlen: Amsterdamse School, jugendstil en art deco. In 1923 opende Abraham Tuschinski zijn meest luxe Rotterdamse bioscoop: het Grand Theatre. Tijdens het bombardement op Rotterdam op 14 mei 1940 verloor Abraham al zijn Rotterdamse bioscopen. Tuschinski in Amsterdam kwam in Duitse handen en kreeg de naam Tivoli. Fue inaugurado el 22 de abril de 1960, durante las festividades de inauguración de la capital brasileña, y sirve desde el principio hasta hoy como la sede del Festival de Cine Brasileño en Brasilia.
