Het voormalige raadhuis van Medemblik, gebouwd in 1939 naar ontwerp van A.J. Kropholler. Hij ontwierp ook het raadhuis van Waalwijk en Wateringen, die ook zo’n enorme trapgevel hebben. Het gebouw staat alweer enige tijd leeg, nadat het gemeentebestuur bij de herindeling naar het voormalige DSB-kantoor in Wognum vertrok. Er zijn plannen voor appartementen maar ontwikkelaar en gemeente liggen overhoop. Double dike house - this freestanding ensemble of two different but complementary houses marks the entrance over the dike onto the elevated semipublic deck. Quite literally, the stepped gable and stepped window composition reference the stairs over the dike. The blue house counters this rigour with its coulour and a slightly wiggling array of windowopenings and marks the corner with a big window in the side facade. These two houses are visible from the main shopping area which led us to express this entrance position architecturally. Spuifront is a collaboration between us, @architectuurmaken and @roosrosarchitecten. We took on the challenge to design a playful mix of six very different family homes and a 8 unit apartment building on key positions in the ensemble. The project is built by @bamwonen for @am_gebiedsontwikkeling.

If I enter a herenhuis here in the Netherlands, I’d be 99% sure there’s no hot water in the WC (in the sink). Even if I know there have been fresh renovations. Nowadays it can be easily referred to the sustainability trend, but globally this is one of the leftovers of Dutch Calvinism - the long history of humble life in harsh conditions and appreciating little things. PS: I have no Calvinist background, but experienced pretty harsh winters back home, in Ukraine. And one of the sweetest memories from childhood is coming back home from cold and putting hands under slightly warm water over the sink. Today was our last day in England, and as we're taking the night ferry, we casually made our way to Harwich via Sandwich (first 5 photos; more to follow. The church collapsed in the 1600's and was rebuilt by Dutch and Flemish refugees, which explains the onion shaped dome I will show on my next post, and the typically Dutch 'klokgevel' to the right side), and along the coast. Which gave us the lovely surprise of Kingsgate. At first we only saw the gap in the white cliffs, but when we parked and I walked down there, I saw the beautiful sight that is Kingsgate Castle just across from the gap. The Isaacs-Hendricks House at 77 Bedford Street was built between 1799 and 1800. It is one of the oldest surviving structures in Manhattan. The free-standing brick and clapboard Federal-style with Dutch gambrel roof, was built by Joshua Isaacs and then his son-in-law Harmon Hendricks, two colonial Sephardic Jews. The current roofline was raised after Evelyn Vaughn following the family selling the property in 1923. Yes, the home was held by the same family from 1800 until 1923! The original front porch was removed when Bedford Street was widened in 1930. In 1938 the site was converted from a single-family home into apartments. 50 years later, in 1989, it was returned to single-family status by the new owner, Jacqueline Thion de la Chum. Also, the exposed brick on the Commerce Street side are the backs of fireplaces and not covered-over windows. Join us on Friday at 1 p.m. for our Greenwich Village walking tour. De architect Alexander #Kropholler maakte een aantal in stijl gelijkende stadhuizen, waaronder deze in #Medemblik. Het gebouw uit 1940 is niet meer in gebruik als #gemeentehuis sinds fusies met buurtgemeenten. Krophollers gebouwen in Waalwijk, Wateringen en Noordwijkerhout hebben net als deze donkerrode bakstenen gevels, een bordestrap en een trapgevel. Bijzonder toch dat de #architectuur verwijst naar een zeventiende-eeuws grachtenpand, terwijl het #raadhuis in de ‘moderne tijd’ is gebouwd. Leuk zijn de schepen op het #bordes, van beeldhouwer John Raedecker. Die maakte ook de drie meter hoge leeuw op de topgevel. Jammer dat ‘t nu niet van binnen te bekijken was. A series of farmsteads from the Netherlands Open Air Museum ranging in date from the early 16th century to the early 19th century. All of these buildings once stood in the Dutch countryside and were moved and reassembled here after 1912 to preserve them. I was struck to see the simplicity in which farm workers lived in rural Holland as recently as the early 20th century with interiors of c.1900 reminding me of those painted during the Dutch Golden Age nearly 300 years earlier. My favourite house was the blue one which dates from the early 1700s and whose occupants shared the house with their cattle. This is the biggest brick building in the Netherlands: The Third Administration Building – better known as the Inktpot (inkwell) – in Utrecht, built 1918 to 1921 for the national Dutch railway company Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) by engineer and architect George Willem van Heukelom. The current owner is the rail infrastructure company ProRail. Dutch Houses: In February I visited Maastricht for the first time. I had a lot the bitterballen, which is one of my fav Dutch snacks. I walked passed many old houses, and on several streets there were these small tiny one-window houses! I managed to capture photos of 6 houses with one-window wide. So, this is the first one of the six. I wonder what's the floor plan like. I know the staircases would be narrow and steep. A short distance north of Arnhem sits Huis Zypendaal, built between 1762-64 as a country retreat for the politician Gerhard Brantsen (1735-1809) and his family and designed by local architect Hendrik Viervant (1718-75). Brantsen was from a prominent local family, both grandfathers had served as mayors of Arnhem and he was also twice mayor himself. He was later one of the signatories of the treaty that ended the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War in 1784 and after the Batavian Revolution in 1795 sat on the state council between 1801-05. His descendants continued living here until 1926. During the Second World War the house was used as a hospital by the German army.
