| Die dunkle Seite des Mondes | Sozialisiert wurde ich im Westen Deutschlands. Meine Mutter & Oma stammen aus (West)Berlin. Sie erzählten mir oft wie es damals war. Berliner Mauer, Klassenkampf, ein Volk - das nicht mehr eines war. Der Osten von Berlin, dass war für sie wie die dunkle Seite des Mondes: geheimnisvoll, unerreichbar, düster. Nun bin ich seit Jahren stolzer Dresdner - doch das nahe Berlin war mir immer fremd geblieben. Zu groß, zu laut, zu viele Menschen. Doch Liebe kennt keine Grenzen - auch nicht jene, die sich im Kopf befinden. Und so fahre ich mittlerweile jedes zweite Wochenende nach Ost-Berlin. Friedrichshain, Treptow, Kaulsdorf... ...Und Ich muss sagen, es gibt kaum etwas aufregenderes, als "die dunkle Seite des Mondes" zu erkunden & Sonntags wieder mit meiner Rakete (Namens DB-Regio) im Dresdner Raumhafen zu landen. The ADN Pförtnerhaus in its original location in East Germany. “The guardhouse (Pförtnerhaus in German) once served to protect the staff parking lot of ADN (Allgemeiner Deustcher Nachrichtendienst) the only approved news agency of the German Democratic Republic, between 1971 and 1992. Berlin artist Christof Zwiener reached it from destruction and transformed it into a mobile residence for invited artists. Tramways in Pyongyang support parts of the city, which does not reach metro and trolley buses. Two brilliant books for a study on a divided Germany. . - Cloud and Wallfish by @annenesbet - we start by meeting Noah who is picked up from school by his parents and immediately taken to the airport to East Germany for six months. He's told on the way he has another name and birthday. He befriends Claudia who lives in the flat below, and through their friendship we learn about what life could be like living in East Germany. At the end of each chapter Anne Nesbet gives a little bit of background info and history to explain what's going on within the leaderships of Germany and it's neighbours. We all loved this book - the kids would try and figure out the story aloud and talk about what was unfair and different. Definitely recommend. . - The Boy Behind the Wall, Maximilian Jones. Admittedly I haven't actually read this book with the kids yet, though I have read it myself a few months ago. I think it's great and I'm looking forward to reading it with them. It's about a boy living with his American family in West Germany who manages to communicate with another boy, son of a government official who lives in East Germany. They write secret letters and talk of escape. There is also a second book, but I liked this one best. Yes, I know - nothing special. Just a construction site on Unter den Linden in Berlin. For me though, it is something much more. Here used to be the Polish embassy in GDR. My late grandfather was a journalist, and a diplomat and he was always very active in terms of Polish and German relations. He really did a lot in that matter. Thus, because of his involvement and knowledge, when communism ended in Poland and when the Berlin Wall was about to be taken down, my grandad was sent to GDR to help to close this chapter of history. He was the last Polish ambassador in GDR.
