Welcome to the first stop on my ceramics tour, Art Center West! Recently celebrating 20 years in operation, The Art Center West is a vibrant and bustling arts studio in Roswell, Georgia. It offers classes, workshops, and studio access in ceramics, a recently established blacksmith’s studio, and plans to create a woodworking program. The ceramics facilities are among the best I’ve seen in a community studio - with multiple electric, gas, salt, soda and raku firing options. The Center also has a Gallery, hosts two annual sales events, and offers year-long artist residencies that include housing, a stipend, and paid teaching opportunitities - an ideal combination for artsist looking to focus on their work while building skills and expereince managing a community studio. Its unique management and support model operates under the Department of Parks and Recreation, which provides direction and limited funding; Roswell residents also receive a generous discount on classes and workshops. Meanwhile, the Roswell Clay Collective, their volunteer ‘booster club,’ helps with daily tasks and coordinates annual events and sales. The thriving community of artists and incredible support shown by the community are a testament to the Center’s Supervisor, #AJArgentina, and the current Artist in Residence, Matt Sloan @matt.h.sloan . Different types of machinery, modern and traditional, are used to break flax. Although they have different designs and scales, they all perform the same function and produce the same result. In our case, we used a type of flax break that is traditional to northern Portugal, which is quite rare, and you will probably not have access to something similar. �For this phase, the equipment to use depends on what is available to you, wherever you are. By the end of this process, you should now have a flexible mass of fibres still enmeshed with wood shives. Are your stalks ready to be dried? As you already know, the retting process can vary significantly according to temperature, humidity, size of the water body and even the variety of flax in question. To make sure they are ready, you can take a couple of stalks and scrape them, checking if the fibres are loose and separated from the inner core of the stem. If so, it is time to remove all the bundles from the water! Before putting them to dry, you can wash the plant stalks directly in the water or afterwards. Removing slime and other impurities at this stage will result in whiter-coloured linen. What is GatewayCrafts? 🤔 GatewayCrafts, launched in 2023, is an Erasmus+ project proposed and coordinated by Saber Fazer / Ofício and which has @cru_creativehub (Portugal) and @materahub (Italy) as partners. On Saturday, we welcomed the 2024 Season at Haystack with our annual #IslandWorkshopDay! We celebrated spring by getting creative alongside new and old friends, gathering around incredible food, and immersing ourselves in the Haystack campus. This annual community-based program brings together our neighbors from Deer Isle, Stonington, and the greater Blue Hill Peninsula with all-level workshops led by incredible instructors in our studios. Rippling is done by passing the upper part of your flax plants through a coarse comb-type tool, the Ripple! To use it, take a bunch of stalks and lower them into the teeth of the ripple, and pull the stalks towards you, so that the seed pods are ripped from the stalks. Happy #MakerMonday folks! This week we are celebrating Maker Member and ceramic artist, the brilliant @marieke.ringel! Before studying Ceramic Art at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle, Germany, Marieke trained as a potter in Landshut, Bavaria. It was very important to her to learn as much as she could about clay, designing her own slips and glazes, firing techniques, and how to solve problems before her studies of Ceramic Art. Over the course of her five year Diploma, she found a way to express herself and create from the heart — making animal sculptures and exploring the relationships between humans and nonhuman animals. “Animals have always played a major role in my life," says Marieke, "They are a source of fascination and inspiration. Growing up in the countryside of south west Germany, animals have been constant companions.” Since 2015, Marieke has lived and worked in Moretonhampstead, a small town located on Dartmoor, in the south west of England. ��She generally builds her sculptures as solid structures, before hollowing them out when they are leather hard. This allows her to work the piece with more expression — she doesn’t have to worry so much about adding and substract clay in the process. She considers a piece finished when she senses a feeling, an emotion, or “something” coming across from the animals expression or gesture. This is possibly the most essential part of her work. By creating this kind of connection to her work and ultimately with the viewer, she tightens the gap between humans and nonhuman animals. She strives to create a sense of essential relatedness between mammals. För två veckor sedan hade Format Utställningskollektiv @formatuk en urtrevlig vernissage på baren @indigosthlm . Ikväll fredag kl 17-22 intar utställningskollektivet Källarbyn @kallarbyn i Gamla Stan (Stora Nygatan 31) med vernissage för utställningen ”Kallsup”. Det är studerande från Nyckelviksskolan som medverkar. Det blir en massa musik och två liveband, varav det ena är Vurpa @vurpagram (kl 18) och sedan spelar Vera Hälsar kl 19. Båda banden har nyckelvikare i sina sättningar. De tre olika kurserna går mån-ons 10-12 juni samt mån-ons 17-19 juni med Sofia Eriksson @sofiaerikssonstudio kursledare och mån-ons 24-26 juni med Sarah Hurtigkarl @hurtigkarlstudio. Du kan sedan fortsätta med egna projekt som till exempel variationer av ringar, stela armband, hängen, örhängen. I kursen får du prova på grunderna i silversmide som att löda, såga och fila. Our Galego Flax, a regional variety, completes a fascinating journey from seed to maturity in approximately 60 days. This journey may vary based on the location and weather conditions, but it's always a captivating one. Here are the 5 significant stages of its development: 1. Germination Our Galego flax seeds are keen to sprout, germinating just 4-8 days after sowing, weather permitting. 🌱 2. Leaf development and growing In just a few weeks, our fields will be a lush sea of green, with each flax plant boasting a main stem and small pointed leaves. 🍃 3. Flowering Around 25-30 days in, our flax plants put on a show with light lilac flowers that bloom in the early morning and shed their petals come afternoon. 🌸 4. Seed pod development Watch as seed pods appear and grow, containing the seeds that are yet to mature, while the plants maintain their vibrant green hue. 🌿 5. Happy World Earth Day! 🌍 We thought today would be the perfect opportunity to re-share our Pilot Schools Project and associated resources (available to download). For this project, MAKE commissioned three makers based in Scotland - Eve Eunson (@eveeunson), Stefanie Ying Lin Cheong (@stefaniecheong) and Deirdre Nelson (@map_making) - to design bespoke lessons that explored craft making and experimentation. With a focus on sustainability, each maker was encouraged to consider materials, their connection to place and the natural world, and highlight the importance of adopting circular economies in relation to their own practice.
