Your summer beach read is here! 🏖️🍹 This month’s book club pick comes from the first author to pull off a brainy ballerina book club three-peat, the incredible @chloe.angyal.writes 🤩 I first fell in love with Chloe’s work when I read her non-fiction book Turning Pointe: How a New Generation of Dancers is Saving Ballet From Itself (if you haven’t read it yet, add it to your list ASAP!). Her next book, the steamy romance novel Pas de Don’t, was perhaps my favorite beach read last summer. And now she’s done it again with Pointe of Pride, the sequel to Pas de Don’t. While I’m not obsessed with eating food, I do use a lot of food metaphors in teaching. When I talk about showing CONTRAST between things (like softness in a movement, accentuated with a punch) - it’s like eating something sweet and spicy, or sweet and sour. When I add things STEP-BY-STEP - it’s like making cupcakes. You don’t frost first! Cupcakes need 🧁 Right ingredients 🧁 Added in the right order 🧁 With the right amount of mixing 🧁 Baked at the right temperature 🧁 For the right amount of time 🧁 Cooled before frosting 🧁 Frosting then sprinkles When I talk about adding JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT of something- it’s like nutmeg. The ingredient you shouldn’t notice by itself, but notice if it is missing. When I talk about SMOOTHNESS and SHARPNESS, fluidity and staccato - it’s like smooth vs. chunky peanut butter. Both are tasty. Everyone has a preference. You can enjoy each more when you contrast with the other. After spending the day at an All England Regional Final yesterday I was surprised by how many teachers and students were deflated by the results. It’s so easy to get caught up in comparing ourselves to other dancers or dance schools and their successes at competitions, but it’s also important to remember that each dance journey is unique. Success isn’t solely defined by trophies and titles, it’s about the passion, creativity, and dedication you bring to the craft. And remember that no two competitions are the same, one month you can be world champion and in the next you may not qualify for national finals. Does that make you less of a dancer or teacher? No. So instead of focusing on others, celebrate your own journey and the progress you have made. Take time to reflect on the results and feedback. Identify any areas for improvement and use this insight to adjust your teaching strategies and choreography or your learning style. Focus on the progress you and your dancers have made and recognise the effort that has been put in. Celebrate even the smallest of achievements and witness the journey you have had rather than just the outcome. Then maintain a positive attitude and remember why you love teaching or why you love to dance. Use any setback as motivation to continue growing and inspiring your students and yourself.
