I first heard Dr. Octagon thanks to a CMJ compilation disc that contained the track Blue Flowers. This would also by my first introduction to Kool Keith, as I’d somehow missed Ultramagnetic MCs. Most, myself included, think of Dr. Octagon as a duo comprised of Kool Keith & Dan The Automater. However, the group also included MC Sir Menelik and contributions from Kut Masta Kurt, Q-Bert and DJ Shadow. The concept behind Dr. Octagon’s Dr. Octagonecologyst (1996) is as unique as Kool Keith’s rhyme style. The doctor is an extraterrestrial surgeon from the planet Jupiter. The album serves as a history of his many malpractices. The character was meant to be a one-off but Capitol Records were taking their sweet time releasing another of Keith’s records. It was during this wait time that Keith would meet Dan, who was very eager to work with the legendary Bronx MC. The album bookends Keith’s career up to that point nicely, with opener 3000 setting the space age tone of what proceeds and 1977, supposedly an early performance of Keith’s in which he announces a 1977 rap show featuring many of hip hop’s pioneers. For the skits featured on the album, Dan would tell Keith what he wanted him to do and Keith would drop a freestyle. The whole album is a wild ride through the minds of two hip hop legends and their friends. It can probably be best summed up by this Kool Keith quote: “A lot of people probably thought I was smoking PCP and was on drugs. Other groups might have needed to be on drugs to attempt a record like that. But I was eating potato chips when we made it. Yoo-Hoos and donuts. It was one big spaceship ride and everyone was riding. Me & Automator were Mr. Spock & Captain Kirk. Years later, inspired by the track of the same name, a housemate of mine would go as Halfsharkalligatorhalfman for Halloween. While the album didn’t chart a lot of people feel like that was because of the independent release. The big stores would have 10 copies then sell out the next day, then not have a copy for a month. Many consider this to be one of the essential rap album of its time.

It's not so much what the lyrics mean but how they sound that matters and it's amazing to listen to.
