I am often asked if the bedroom door should be open or closed for sleep. Especially from parents with toddlers who may start to protest bedtime and request the door be open. My answer is to keep the door closed. There are a few reasons for this: - We want to set up a positive sleep environment for our baby or child and this includes having a cool, dark space for them to sleep. Keeping the door shut will ensure that light will not enter the room, allowing them the opportunity to produce more melatonin and sleep more restfully. - Keeping the door closed for our older children in a big kid bed will help act as a boundary to keep them safely contained in their bedroom. Once they are out of the crib we want to treat their room like one big crib. This means that the room is childproof and has a clear boundary to keep them from wandering around the house in the middle of the night. - Keeping the bedroom door closed can help keep pets out of your child's room. If you have a cat or a dog that is free to roam the house at night, you may know how they can sometimes disrupt your sleep by jumping on the bed (I know I do!) Keeping your child's door closed will help keep pets from disrupting their sleep. - Firefighters recommend sleeping with the door closed. Providing two options, with a choice between the two, allows your child to feel like they have some control over the bedtime routine. Offering too many choices can be overwhelming for your child and may produce more stalling, so try to keep the choices minimal. You can even offer a choice before you start the bedtime routine! "It's time to go get ready for bed, do you want to walk to your room or do you want me to carry you?" This can be applied to your regular daily routine as well! "We're going to the park, do you want to wear your white shoes or black shoes?" Make sure you are offering choices that are acceptable for your child to choose. Don't offer sandals as a choice of footwear if it's raining, for example. As the holidays approach, you may be wondering how to protect your child's sleep during this busy time. Here are some tips: Prioritize sleep when you can When you don't have any plans to leave the house or have guests over, ensure that your nap and bedtime schedule stays on track. This will help keep a strong foundation for sleep if your schedule gets disrupted later. Bring your sleep environment If you are travelling to friend or family member's house and your child needs to take a nap while you are there, try to set up their sleep environment to mimic what it looks like at home as best as you can. Cover the windows so the room is dark. Bring your white noise machine. Bring their familiar lovey items if they are old enough for comfort objects in the crib. Use the same crib sheet you have been using at home so they have a familiar environment. Ask for help If you have the ability to ask for help, do so. Lean on your support group during this busy time. Remember the 80/20 rule This is a rule we like to stick to when it comes to your child's sleep. 80% of the time we prioritize sleep and stick to our sleep schedule. 20% of the time a nap may be missed or a bedtime may happen later than normal. It's ok. Enjoy your time at a holiday party or visiting with family, and get your sleep schedule back on track the next day. Say no if you have to Many of us feel pressured to say yes to every invitation during the holidays. Sometimes, missing a nap or offering your child a later bedtime may not be worth it to you. Here are some tips on how to protect sleep on Halloween: 👻 Protect day sleep Ensure you are heading into Halloween night with a well rested child. Prioritize sleep this weekend, knowing that your child may stay up later than normal after trick-or-treating. 👻 Have a plan Children thrive when they know what's coming. Prepping them for the big night can help reduce surprises and meltdowns. Try on their costume a few times before Halloween, practice trick-or-treating so they know what to expect, and have a meeting to outline all of the rules and expectations that come with Halloween night. Make it fun! 👻 Start early Get out there as early as possible. You will be able to hit all of the houses you planned to, and will be able to get back for a reasonable bedtime. 👻 Modify bedtime You may want to shorten your bedtime routine for Halloween night. Skip the bath, have PJ's ready, read one book instead of two. Don't get rid of the bedtime routine, children still need some wind-down time, just have all of your elements prepped and shorten it a bit. 👻 Have fun This goes without saying. Try your best to have fun! Keep expectations low. Understand that trick-or-treating can be a lot for a young child. They may be wearing a bulky costume, they may have to walk more that usual, they may get over-excited about all of the candy they are going to get. Emotions can run high. Prep them as much as possible before the big night, and then have fun with it! Halloween night is certainly one of those nights that fall into the 20% of the 80/20 rule. As we continue Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, it is important to bring to light one of the leading causes of death in healthy infants under the age of one in Canada. That's SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. "In Canada, from 2015 to 2020, there were approximately 1,700 deaths per year among infants under the age of 1. On average, 1 in 15 (110) of these deaths occurred while the infant was sleeping. While a number of deaths that occurred during sleep were of natural causes, such as respiratory diseases or congenital defects, the majority (83%) were sudden and unexpected and occurred in otherwise healthy infants." - Statistics Canada "- The majority of sudden and unexpected sleep-related deaths occur among infants under four months. - More than 9 in 10 infants who died suddenly in their sleep were in an unsafe sleep environment. - Nearly 7 in 10 sudden and unexpected sleep-related deaths occurred on a surface not intended for infant sleep. - Over half of infants who died suddenly in their sleep were sharing a bed." - Statistics Canada It is important to follow all safe sleep guidelines as outlined by the @ameracadpeds.
