I've been reading a lot about emotional fluency lately. Emotional fluency means broadening our vocabulary around emotion to better understand, communicate and regulate our human experience. So when I'm feeling resigned at the fact that I haven't been able to get my seven-year-old to practice her dictée words, or I have a sense of curiosity around the new word my three-year-old keeps saying that sounds a lot like "bitch" I can vocalize my experience not only to my partner but also to myself. When I have more emotion words to describe my experience, I can better understand what I'm going through and seek the help I need. The human experience goes far beyond being happy, sad, angry, and fearful. Let's learn how to lean into this more fully. When you’re considering kids, parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, friends, and partners...it’s no wonder it feels so overwhelming! 👉 Sharing the increased mental load with your partner means less work and less resentment. If you’re the over functioning partner, decide this year to offload some things. ✨ “Hey love, I need you to take over your parents, your siblings, and everything for the kid stockings this year.” ✨ “Let’s each come up with 5 ideas for the kids and talk about them Friday night on the couch.” ✨ “Let’s revisit what is really important to us during the holiday season and see what we can take off our task list.” (A values conversation!) If you don’t normally share gifting responsibility, then this may be a conversation to have with your partner.
