A lot of us out there often worrywhat other people think of us. I used to be one of those people. I have long since been cured of that concern. There’s way more to being a good person than what others perceive you to be. Actually, what others think of you is none of your business! At the end of the day, your outward haters and your lowkey haters that disguise as friends are going to still be there watching your every move. And yes, if you make some serious gains in business results or interpersonally, they will see that success and try to label you as an ego driven guy who lacks humility… or if you’re a woman doing like I do, let’s face it, they will probably just label you a bitch. But does someone who is driven by their ego always make sure to take care of friends and employees in their circle as people? To make them feel heard even when you privately have been facing huge battles on your own? To make them feel appreciated via love languages (results vary here depending on their specific love languages). Answer: that person is probably being falsely labeled an egomaniac (or a bitch) by persons who are intimidated by their strength, and their resilience to stick to their beliefs and their game plan both. And our drive simply upsets these folks and makes them feel mighty insecure about the job they are doing as a friend or work associate - so they take the ill conceived easy route and put you down in an efforts to elevate themselves and look better by comparison. Don’t fall for it. You know what drives you. And you know your resolve. Do not make your unflappability a negative reflect on you by dimming your light for these people. People are watching you regardless. People are talking about you regardless. So just do you regardless. A moment of Monday captured last night before bed, of me reflecting on the events of the day… of the past few weeks…of this journey as of late… This picture was snapped at the moment I realized just how much my being a champion of the underdog, an advocate for equality, and a voice for fairness… all while also sticking to the boundaries I’d struggled to finally define for myself… has me feeling drained lately… and somewhat at a spiritual crossroads. Speaking up for others never seems hard for me. In fact, it’s one of the things I actually truly admire about myself. But speaking up for my own best interests with the same enthusiasm? For the guy who would gladly give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, yet would rather shove food in his mouth before he ever dreamed of speaking up to advocate for himself or to express his needs that are not being met? That’s always been a mighty tall order for me. Then again, I’m far better equipped now to rise to any challenge, regardless of its height. And that’s my takeaway from this Aries season spent almost entirely in Retrograde. The important struggles are never comfortably solved. But rather, you grow into greater strength so you have all the resources necessary for the battle and the win. Well the birthday party theme at work continued today. Before I left for my days off, I was trying to celebrate my fellow Aries associate Ella’s belated birthday when she came back to town, with a little pizza party. Little would I realize that the cakes and SusieCakes cupcakes and gifts started rolling in for me too! Today was bigger and purpler with Lorena bounding into work with a bouquet of purple silk flowers and balloons, and Christiana arriving with a birthday confetti cake… only to be served with a four confetti cannon saluteby them and our vendors Eddie and Tyler. The icing on the confetti cake was that several of my best personal clients were here in the store to celebrate their birthday boy too! My vendor teams also arrived with a second round of Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, gummy bears and Susie Cakes cupcakes … hey, what can I say? I have a reputation! I am #thankful to all of my team members and vendor partners who took the time to celebrate with me this year and who each gave thoughtful gifts that are unique to my eclectic tastes, and gift cards to my favorite Brentwood eateries and coffee joints. Today is officially this guy’s birthday! ♈️🎂♈️🥂♈️ Well I had written a warm and fuzzy post, but it got deleted. So let me instead take this cue from the Universe to share a little wisdom I have learned in this last trip around the sun, in a year where personal and professional disappointments were only surpassed by the atrocities performed by the Republican Party. It is an amazing thing to give of yourself, whether it’s family, friends, coworkers or clients, giving your energy and investing in other people can be a very powerful thing. But whether you are devoting this time to people or to endeavors like volunteer work, political causes, or growing a business… you have to make sure that the energy you invest somehow gets channeled back to you. And while growing a business can grow you in terms of money, and volunteering can fulfill you in a spiritual level, you have to be way more careful who you give your energy to. Setting up boundaries and sticking to them is something I learned way too late to do, as a recovered People Pleaser. But reinforcing those boundaries with people who seek to take advantage of your kindness, your commitment, and you doing the right thing is mandatory. Not because you’re trying to punish them. But rather to protect and nourish YOU. There’s this thing we do to alleviate the stress of the day by getting silly at the end of each shift. Getting your phone stolen sucks. Getting your wallet stolen sucks. Getting both of them at the same time stolen sucks way harder. I literally lost an ENTIRE WORKING DAY trying to recapture from the cloud whatever was in my IPhone, whilst trying to cancel all my credit cards without any phone and get those reissued ASAP, and also preserving my rent money in the bank (due the 1st) in my debit account, while draining the rest of my cash savings to cover the cost of the replacement phone. Got all that? 😱😖 Your head hurt yet? 🤯😫 Just imagine the stampede of migraine feet tap dancing all over my brain all day. Words cannot describe the pain… Now looking to the bright side, it took all afternoon between Team AT&T and Apple to recovered all my contacts, photos, etc from the Cloud so I actually got to keep my phone number. Had the pleasure of meeting Maria Shriver and Patrick Schwarzenegger at the Earthbar in Brentwood doing a pop-up promo for their protein bar company, Mosh. I heard they were coming to our complex and wanted to show my support and purchase some of their bars, which Mosh in turn uses to help fund Alzheimer’s research. Today thru the powers of social media, I wound up talking to my third grade teacher for the first time since the third grade. In giving her a quick rundown of my life since, my divorce was mentioned. She said she was sorry. I assured her she need not be. Especially since today, friends from all chapters of my life have been texting and posting their congratulations to me. Five years ago today… my divorce became final. 💜🙏🏻💜 No other event in my entire life has changed me more completely. Not a single bad thing has come out of my decision to leave what clearly was not working, and I have never regretted one minute of what came next. It’s all been about personal growth, making myself a priority (finally) and enjoying my own company as well as the company of those who helped me grow and not hinder. Five years ago today… I started on a new path in my career journey as well. 💸🏃🏻♂️ It feels unbelievable to me that I’ve now been with Bluemercury for 5 years now. Most of this time has been spent in the role of Store Manager, and I have grown so much as a leader and as a human in this role. Though it has been more challenging than all the past hats I have worn in the beauty biz… for the most part, I adore my teams, my coworkers in sister stores, my vendors, and my clients so much! When you surround yourself with good people, you elevate yourself.
