Her Evolution Continues… Not unlike her hair. This has been such a treacherous ride, the last few years. Heartbreaking at times. The perceived loss at various stages has been palpable. To go from “beautiful,” to merely “interesting.” In a society wherein we are treated quite differently when we meet certain ideals, especially when achieved so naturally. This culture encourages hiding, perpetuating living a lie. Many of us hide behind our hair for most of our lives, whether we realize this or not. It is just another mask, another filter, another barrier: constraining, contorting, and at minimum impairing genuine connection. Hats, sunglasses, makeup, clothing, cars, food, drugs, alcohol, caffeine, ideas, beliefs, wealth, status, rituals, and more. Hiding behind beauty and femininity was something I was particularly good at. I was largely unaware that I was doing so, but deep down, of course I knew this. I loved how it felt. I enjoyed how I was able to interface with the world. It made me feel more comfortable about the insecurities, making them less noticeable. It felt like belonging. And there is nothing inherently wrong with looking one’s best. There is nothing wrong with moving through the world of experience in deliciously stunning fashion. But it is that feeling of hiding that I question. When we are hiding, at bottom, it means we are afraid of being “found out.” As if something is not okay just precisely as it is. An underlying shame, unworthiness, and/or perception that we are NOT (((enough))). It is a lie. Even when we believe we are being genuine, we are almost always playing roles in our respective movies. What we forget, is that this is a “Choose Your Own Adventure” lottery ticket, even if we do not remember purchasing it. A jackpot we did not ask for, but here we are. It can be a real wake-up call, when one day you realize that the care and acceptance you had for yourself, was ultimately conditional. Acceptance is, as ever, an inside job. Transparency, authenticity, and truth must be fought for. Living (((free))) cannot be negotiated. The cost of not doing so, in the end, is astronomical. ~ Jo 23 April 2024

My hair has always been a sore spot for me because I didn’t know or had the patience to deal with it. I remember being told when I was younger how my hair used to break combs, brushes and I would see cuts on my mother’s fingers from my hair. I used to get relaxers to tame it and lost hair for it. After watching #goodhair the Chris Rock documentary, I left those moved to keratin treatments and staying natural which helped alot. I’ve done braids and sew ins to give my hair break from the summer heat and sun. I lost some edges and the back of my hair broke off really bad. I then started to crochet braids every 3 months with @knattystrandz_by_cci and documented my hair growth and journey. I tried different products before settling on @4conly which has done wonders for my hair and helping to keep it hydrated. I still have a ways to go and I’m ok with that. I am still learning and will one day get a point where I am ok with my hair as it, but not right now. I am still learning how to manage it, help it, nurture it and most of all love it. I took my crochets down yesterday and it took me seven hours to get them out, blow dried out, washed and deep conditioned, blow dried out again and straightened. Progress is progress. And I will keep it up. P.S: I did do what I an assume everyone black woman has done when struggling with their hair and contemplated cutting all the shit off. Sometimes the struggle makes you wanna cut the shit off. 🌸My mom always said__… 🌸 . . …A woman’s hair is her “crowning GLORY”. . . As a youngin, I never understood that line of thinking or that phrase. There are biblical implications with varying interpretations; therefore many have their idea of what hair means to women, mostly associated with length. I really don’t care about it at all! 🤷🏽‍♀️ . . What I will say—is, any woman who cuts her hair — going against societal standards of what beauty is —that’s a BOLD and CONFIDENT WOMAN. Now, multiply that sentiment times 10 for a black woman with natural kinky coils, that’s me. I have a hair story, as I’m sure most women do. I’ll share it in a blog post—not enough space here. One of my life’s greatest decisions was doing a big chop —ridding my hair of “creamy crack” and going short and natural; that was in 2018, I think. I’ve never looked back. Nothing against permed hair—I was simply tired of it—needed a change. I simply LOVE ❤️ my kinky tresses. This past Sunday was shampoo day—detangle, wash and condition. A true SOUL SELF CARE DAY! I struggle and actually dread shampoo day —the tangles and the knots are no joke. And plus, there’s a lot of emotion attached to hair. But once it’s all done, I feel so light and FREE! I’m learning to NEVER take LIFE for granted. I wake up each morning, open my eyes, step out of bed and start my day ~ never thinking that this could be my last. On March 19th, while joking around, I stood up, walked a few - too quick steps, looked around and the next thing I remember I was waking up in the emergency room TRAUMA UNIT. Hours later??? Disoriented when I opened my eyes, I saw my boo and my son staring at me ~ in a strange place. Nauseous with a “literal splitting headache”, I felt three sharp pains to the top of my head. There is power in surrender, there is power in acceptance. And I know None of this is easy. When we exist in our darkest hour we often cannot see any light. There is light, I’m telling you that from someone that fell so far down a pit of darkness… all I saw was despair, darkness, heartache, depression, and I felt I was eroding in the mirror. All of it was so painful, I lived lost for so many years. My hair loss began in 1999, I was 21. 2012 I started wearing wigs 2023 I shaved my head. Along the way of all this, I evolved. I found the ability to live with this, when I never thought that possible. That doesn’t mean it’s all easy, that doesn’t mean I don’t have frustrations, that doesn’t mean some days don’t flat out suck, but I am able to work with this, to have my life again. I am open to everyone in my life about my wigs, about my hair loss, because I lived so shut in for so long, I felt like a prisoner and a hostage to my hair loss for SO LONG, I didn’t want that anymore, so starting around 2014 I just began being more open to EVERYONE, friends and strangers. I found acceptance from others, and acceptance within myself, and I found a strength I never knew existed.

Traction Alopecia is hair-loss through repetitive and excessive pulling or stretching of the hair. I couldn’t in good faith put small cornrows in this queens hair like she normally gets from another stylist. After a deep consultation we decided on Olaplex treatment, cut and style. People have embedded in their head that having braids in their hair for long periods of time promotes hair growth and that can be far from the truth. Hair is a journey, but the black girl hair journey is more of an odyssey. I have always hidden in my hair. It’s been a security blanket for me. A source of pride and status. Only one other time in my life has it been above my shoulders, but it was long enough to flip still. As a black woman, having a lot of hair is often a talking point. It’s something that people generally will mention when telling you that you’re beautiful. “Oh you look nice. Your HAIR is amazing. It’s so long. I love it when you wear it straight….etc.” Well folks, a few weeks ago I was OVER it. So I took a pair of scissors and I CHOPPED it. I’m really settling into who I am and there are some things that I’m realizing since cutting my hair. 1. I have a beautiful face. 2. My smile is infectious. 3. My eyes are full of depth. 4. My skin is a beautiful chocolate brown. 5. I’m a 10/10 baddie. It feels good to document this for myself. Gisteren puntjes geknipt door Becky, dus de Before/After zit hem vooral in de lengte en niet in een color or style switch, én ik ga een nieuwe productlijn (shampoo, conditioner, mousse, olie) uitproberen. Backstory: Ik heb jaren geen vaste kapper gehad, hou niet van hele haar-routines voor ik de deur uit ga, zo nu en dan knipte iemand mij privé en ook heb ik met mijn mixed hair (wavy, curly, dun) al de hype van een krullenkapper geprobeerd. Leuke ervaring maar ik vond het weinig meerwaarde hebben voor mijn type haar, ik draag het vaak omhoog en wil ik wil het liefst gewoon zo min mogelijk product in mijn haar, het natuurlijk houden, bijpunten, in model, lagen. Met product erin -per krul- werd het een erg dun bosje en voelde ik me niet meer mijzelf ook al zat het twee dagen leuk. Dus vanaf augustus heb ik het vervolgens gewoon weer laten groeien, “kijken hoe lang het kan worden”. En korter knippen creëert volume zegt men, maar het creëert bij mij vooral minder volume/haar. Dreads of braids zijn helaas ook geen optie. Dus na maanden de boel steeds vaker omhoog omhoog, soms met wat nephaar gecombineerd, werd het hoog tijd om te knippen. Want klittende dode puntjes. Ik zat al een tijdje met… waar ga ik het eens proberen. Becky is de favo kapper in Groningen van iemand die ik online leerde kennen 🤗, stond in de krant en kwam landelijk in de media omdat ze 1x per maand gratis mensen knipt die het niet breed hebben, en nu blijkt dat ze ook de vaste kapper was van een vriendin 🤩. Daarnaast doet ze veel meer dan knippen alleen, dus stel ik wil wat “anders” voor een optreden of een project, dan weet zij raad, of heeft zij pruiken, haarwerken, et cetera. Wat ook heel belangrijk is voor mij, is de sfeer die in een zaak hangt. Transparency Post: Ariana is the only Afro Latina in her grade and one of the few biracial kids in her entire elementary school. The students are extremely interested in her hair. She’s ran home before begging me to straighten it asking me why she had to have hair like this. From birth, I always let her know that her hair is gorgeous and that some people may not understand its uniqueness. They might question it, try to touch it, and try to make fun of it. (The students call her Ice Spice and try to touch her hair all the time since it’s so fluffy). Today i picked her up and she was crying because some kids kept hitting her on the head and face with a ball because of her hair. She asked me “why me, there are so many kids in this school, why did they pick me?!” “I told her God’s creations are not mistakes and that there is nothing wrong with her. Walk into that school with your head held high, proud of who you are and what you look like. Don’t let them tear down your joy” I say all this because i feel like acceptance starts with the parents. Educate kids on boundaries and acceptance. A little bit of kindness and understanding goes a long way. You just never know what the other kids are struggling with behind closed doors.
