🌱 THE PROBLEM WITH CURB DRAINS Although common in some older developments, house or yard drains are generally not allowed to drain directly into the street anymore. The problems are obvious - any rain water that falls on a house roof will run immediately to the street. This water then runs along the gutter until it finds a storm drain. Combining the runoff from your yard and all the houses around you can quickly overwhelm the storm sewer, flood your neighborhood or the neighborhoods downhill of your location. Modern residential storm water management has changed all that. It’s all about holding onto storm water as long as possible. Downspouts should now direct rain water to detention basins or yard sumps that allow the collected water to slowly percolate into the soil. The idea is to detain at least the first 1” of rain from any storm. (Photo 1) This curb drain is connected to a basement sump pump. Obviously, it presents a real danger during freezing weather. (Photo 2) This newer channel drain box is connected to an old cast iron pipe that, in turn, travels underground and connects with the downspout. DIY Liquid Laundry Soap - Make years worth of laundry soap for just pennies! Start by making our homemade powdered laundry soap (see past post). Supplies Needed: 5 Cups of Your Powder Laundry Detergent Large Pot Water Large Spoon or Paint Stick for stirring or hand electric mixer 2 Gallon Bucket with Lid* Liquid dispensing facet (Highly recommended but optional)** 2 gallon buckets can be found for free at your local bakery, just ask! Directions: Add 4 cups of water and 2 cups of powder laundry soap to a large pot. Put the heat on med-high, & stir until completely melted – (10 mins) Fill up your 2 gallon bucket halfway with hot water. Pour in the melted detergent mixture. Add whatever essential oils you like, (optional) Fill bucket to the top with warm water and stir. Snap on the lid and let set for 24 hours to gel up. It will be solid. Stir to the consistency you desire. Use electric hand mixer or immersion blender if preferred. The soap will be the consistency of a slime gel. If you using another dispensing container, pour into preferred containers and seal for storage. How Much to Use: For HE front loading & top loading washers, use 1/2 cup for a large load. If it’s a SUPER dirty, you can use a full cup. Use stain removers or oxi-clean as usual. For easy dispensing, attach a plastic adhesive hook on to the side of your bucket to hang your reusable laundry cup on it! I label my buckets by printing out the recipe and tape it to the back of the bucket. I use clear masking tape and cover the entire recipe. This gives is a water resistant/protective cover. This soap will last you a long time depending on your family size and makes an easy (and cheaper) alternative to store bought.
