The patch of bird’s eye gilia in the Deer Flat picnic area seemed more impressive than usual this year. Or maybe we just hit it at the right time. 😍 Although it’s spread to other areas of the US via garden seed mixes, this member of the phlox family is native to only California. It thrives on open, grassy plains and slopes in our Central Valley, Sierra foothills and Coastal ranges. The scientific name, Gilia tricolor, is a nod to the striking combination of blue-violet petals and dark purple ring above the flower’s bright yellow throat. The white flowers attract large flying moths who cannot see the darker coloured flowers in the same cluster. All of the angel’s trumpets are from South America 🌎 Angel’s trumpet is a very poisonous plant, causing intense hallucinations, seizures, and even death in the most severe cases 😶 You can get poisoned by touching, inhaling, or eating almost any part of an angel’s trumpet 🫣 Angel’s trumpets bloom at night, pumping out a head, sweet scent fragrance to attract pollinators like moths and bats 🌚 Certain butterflies eat angel trumpets and store alkaloids in the body to increase their chances of survival in the wild. The high content of alkaloids in a moth’s body makes it unpalatable for most predators 🦋 The Indians regard the angel’s trumpet as sacred🙏 Traditionally, the plant has been used as a hallucinogen and to induce euphoria. Indigenous people of the Andes mountains used it as remedy and tool for their rituals.
