DEFEND THE DEEP // Despite the unknowns and risks of deep sea mining, several countries are pushing projects ahead to explore the deep sea using sonar to find the best areas for mining (check out our previous posts on the negative effects of noise on marine mammals). As of 2020, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) had already issued 30 mining contracts covering ~1.5 million square kilometers for mining exploration. If you want to prevent deep-sea mining (or at least slow it down enough to ensure thorough research is conducted first), it’s important to make your voice heard! You can do this right now by signing the petitions led by @onlyone and @greenpeace (links in our bio). MINING MISCONCEPTIONS // Plans for deep sea mining target 3 main ecosystems unique to the deep ocean where minerals and metals like iron, nickel, manganese, and cobalt are abundant; mid-ocean ridges created by volcanic activity, hydrothermal vents where superheated water and dissolved minerals pour out of the Earth’s crust like underwater geysers, and “nodule fields”, strange looking plains covered by spherical “rocks” that are actually dense metal deposits that form around ancient shark teeth and other hard items on the sea floor. . Reality: The habitats formed by mid-ocean ridges, hydrothermal vents, and nodule fields attract unique kinds of creatures found nowhere else on Earth, and the living community in these habitats varies significantly over small scales. Therefore, any loss of these organisms could be very damaging. Scientists are also still unsure how far sediment plumes kicked up by mining could travel before settling, which can smother any animals living on the bottom. Misconception: Living communities impacted by mining will recover quickly. Reality: Although communities around mid-ocean ridges have evolved to recover quickly from frequent volcanic activity, those around hydrothermal vents and nodule fields take hundreds to millions of years to form. Misconception: The deep ocean is not a pristine wilderness, so further human impacts are okay. Reality: It’s true that even the deepest parts of the ocean have been impacted by human pollution. However, they remain one of the least impacted ecosystems on Earth. One critical function of the deep ocean is to store huge amounts of carbon. December 1982. I could literally see this wave at The Tola Rivermouth from my bed where I grew up. This morning I shot some empty waves at sunrise off of the Capitola Pier before going out and getting pitted off my head on every wave- solo. The sandbar was all time and the swell was cooking. There was tons of current that made it like an almost stationary wave. I tied a rope to the pier and held onto it between sets. I rode for the genius shaper Mike Croteau who gave me everything. This board had 3 glass on square turbo fins (he called them Das Waffens), air induction holes going through the deck of the board, coming out onto a pressure plate and out through a channel that ran down the bottom half of the board and off the tail, and an English Beat inspired airbrush. To say I had a blessed youth would be an understatement. When I give my testimony of my own spiritual journey people are in awe. From how I went back out in the night clubs to work to save my family from death, how my entire family came and packed me up out of the home I loved and I transitioned out of it in 7 days and got a home with no job, the conception of my son/marriage/divorce, and how I left my dream job to transition to becoming a business owner. With that being said, there will be many that won't receive your positioning in their lives from God or that you are one of his chosen ones. Each person owns their own spiritual journey. Either they want God or they don't. I can only testify that I'm glad God was with me on my mine. 2024 is here. Nevermind the naysayers......Keep rising!!!! This kind of approach helps partners to work together in order to achieve practical results and quantify their progress. 🇳🇱🇷🇴The aim of the program is not only to share knowledge and expertise, but collaboration with foreign partners also creates new ideas and experiences that could be applied to the water management both in Romania and the Netherlands, respectively. Alongside experts from NARW and the Dutch Water Authorities, representatives from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Romania and the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Romania also participated at this meeting🇳🇱🇷🇴.
