FROM THE ASHES Some years ago i bought a whole lot of wrecked, destroyed or damaged cehicles. All in 1/72 or 1/76. I paid 1 euro each piece, no matter what model or if it was a vehicle or a gun. I took it all and put it on the shelf of things to restore. I took many of those vehicles during the years, and today i decided i wanted to restore this Panzer IV H. it's dirty, partially destroyed and some pieces were missing. And now it's finished ! All details are done and the nuln oils did just dry off. Today in History - 28 April 1941: Sergeant Jack Hinton earns the Victoria Cross for his actions in Kalamata, Greece. "To Hell with this, who’ll come with me?!" Sergeant Jack Hinton on the night of 28 April 1941. Having been ordered with supporting the evacuation of the Greek port of Kalamata, Hinton fought his way down a narrow street under heavy enemy fire, destroying several machine gun posts, and attacking an armoured self propelled gun, before being severely wounded in the stomach. Attempts to evacuate were later abandoned, and the remaining Allied troops, including Hinton, were captured. Hinton spent the rest of the war in prisoner of war camps in Greece and Germany. Medals are not normally conferred on soldiers while they are prisoners, therefore it was a major break with precedent when the announcement of the award of the Victoria Cross to Sergeant Hinton was made on 17 October 1941. Hinton, in solitary confinement at the time due to several unsuccessful escape attempts, was presented with the ribbon of his medal by a German general at a parade in his prisoner of war camp. Doordat we het verhaal vanuit Rosa lezen - het is als het ware alsof ze praat op het papier - moest ik in het begin wel wennen aan de schrijfstijl. Het voelde in het begin wat onwennig, omdat ik me écht aangesproken voelde, ma chère. Maar al snel wende dat en sloeg ik bladzijde na bladzijde om. Verschillende emoties passeerden de revue. Rosa geeft namelijk een inkijkje áchter het masker van alle glitter en glamour. En haar leven bracht een aantal zwarte gaten met zich mee. De beginselen van haar levensverhaal zijn walgelijk, maar tóch lijkt er iets positiefs uit voort te zijn gekomen. Sprankjes van hoop. This rapid sequence of events marked a crucial turning point in the collapse of Fascist Italy, signifying the end of Mussolini's dictatorial regime and his direct influence over the country.
Wednesday 10th May 1939 The tour for the Hampshire Field Club ended in the garden with a talk at ‘Miss Austen’s tree. Mrs Stevens described how, as a four year old child, she was told the story by the gardener who had worked for the Austens. He was a ‘Tall man who wore a smock and a tall hat’ and that ‘he had gone to the Great house with Miss Austen to get a little oak tree sapling and this was the centre tree of three oak trees.’ ……………………………………………………………………………….. Personal note: There is no written evidence of an oak having been planted by Jane Austen -or who planted the other two. We know that Hornbeams were planted inside of the tall fence to form a shrubbery and that Mr Armstrong was paid £17 19s on 23rd July 1810 for shrubs. Constance Hill in her 1901 biography wrote “we have sat …beneath the shade of great over-arching trees, one of which, an oak, is said to have been planted by Jane herself.” “Is said? “ - Mrs Stevens was living here in 1901. Could this legend have been born by the growing interest in Jane Austen? Would Mrs Stevens have known who Jane Austen was when she was a four year old child in 1866? It is plausible that ‘the gardener’ was William Littleworth, employed as a manservant to the Austens from 1816 and who lived opposite in Pond Cottages. William remained in his post until the death of Cassandra in 1845, after which he found employment as a gardener. Sadly, In 1871 he entered the Alton workhouse and died in 1878. What an incredible experience! A weekend full of history and aviation!!! Here, I am on board the only B17 bomber in the world that still flies and is completely airworthy. I'm standing just above the bomb bay. Quonset Hut Remodel Day 60: It’s time to furnish this place … I went to Walmart today to get some hand towels for the bathroom. I walked away with towels, a toaster, dish drainer, paper towel holder, and a microwave. I get distracted easily. I also brought in a wing back chair for the living room and some extra dishes and coffee pot that my mom gave me. I have another chair, but I can only fit one in my car at a time. I am loving how it’s coming together. I’m in need of a bed, small table with chairs, pots and pans, and kitchen utensils. If anyone has any of these items that they’d like to get rid of for a reasonable price, let me know. It was a 2-beer day. But what’s really neat is the Strawson and Iredale are British copies and the Iredale has how many pounds and shillings the book was on special. The Herington is an Australian volume. Sadly it was price clipped but still interesting and cheap enough to buy. Also definitely a sucker for a Penguin Books paperback that’s in mint shape!
