Today I visited the ‘Petitioning for Peace’ exhibition at St Fagans National Museum of History, it showcased the Women’s Peace Petition of 1923/24 and the striking Greenham Common banners during the 1980s. The exhibition is open until the 15th September and it’s well worth a visit! ~ In April 2023, a peace petition signed by almost 400,000 Welsh women after the First World War was returned to Wales from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History to the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. ~ In 1918, the Welsh League of Nations Union (WLNU) was established by David Davies of Llandinam. In 1923, the WLNU’s female members agreed to take a petition to American women who could join them and secure a future of world peace. ~ Local committees were set up with 400 women (and a few men) who had to gain signatures working together regardless of their beliefs and backgrounds. In seven months they collected a huge number of 390,296 signatures. ~ They set off to the US in February 1924 and were led by Annie Hughes-Griffiths who was chair of the WLNU. Woodrow Wilson (28th, 1913-1921) setting sail on the S.S. George Washington on December 4, 1918 with First Lady Edith Wilson. Wilson would become the first president to visit Europe while in office. He had outlined his Fourteen Points in a speech to Congress on January 8, 1918 and wished to visit Europe to promote these ideals, along with having them interwoven into the peace treaty. This, in Wilson’s mind, was essential for the early formation of a League of Nations, which could serve to arbitrate conflicts between nations and endeavor to avoid military conflicts in the future, such as The Great War. Wilson stated, “The world (must) be made fit and safe to live in; and particularly that it be made safe for every peace-loving nation which, like our own, wishes to live its own life, determine its own institutions, be assured of justice and fair dealing by the other peoples of the world as against force and selfish aggression.” Wilson was praised in Europe upon his arrival for breaking with the longstanding neutrality and isolationist tendencies of the United States with regard to the European continent by intervening in the military conflict on the side of the Allied Powers. Wilson’s position throughout his first term had been that of largely passive support for the Allied Powers and an opponent to sending American troops to Europe (something which had never been done previously), but ultimately would have the United States enter the conflict formally in 1917 by asking Congress for “a war to end all wars.” Many have argued that Wilson’s plans to enact his Fourteen Points were stymied by Wilson’s contraction of the Spanish Flu in early 1919, which left him bedridden and often unable to attend conference negotiations with other world leaders, resulting in the Treaty of Versailles being unlike what he had initially conceived. Smuts attended and played a leading role at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, advocating for the creation of the League of Nations (and making a major contribution thereto) and securing South African control over the former German South-West Africa. The League of Nations was the precursor of today's United Nations. The Peace Conference resulted in the signing of the Treaty of Versailles - which remarkably took place on the 28th June, 1919 - the day this booklet was inscribed. It is tempting to connect the inscribee - Mrs. R.H. Nicholson, to Harold Nicolson, MP, who was a member of the British delegation to the Peace Conference. Doch das Glück war leider nicht auf der Seite des Teams, welches aus David Will mit My Prins van Dorperheide, Richard Vogel im Sattel von United Touch S, Christian Kukuk mit Checker und André Thieme im Sattel von Chakaria bestand. 🏇🌴 Zehn Nationen starteten am vergangenen Samstagabend in der League of Nations – in der ersten Runde traten alle vier Teammitglieder an, im zweiten Umlauf nur noch drei Reiter. Letztendlich waren die Iren unschlagbar. Der zweite Rang ging an die Schweiz, vor den gastgebenden Vereinigten Staaten. Das deutsche Team musste bereits im ersten Umlauf acht Strafpunkte einbüßen – André Thieme, Christian Kukuk und Richard Vogel hatten jeweils einen Abwurf, von denen einer aufgrund des fehlerfreien Parcours von David Will nicht gewertet wurde. In der zweiten Runde gingen Vogel, Will und Kukuk an den Start. Vogel blieb fehlerfrei, Will hatte zwei Abwürfe und auch Kukuk musste einen Fehler an der Triplebarre einbüßen. Somit gingen insgesamt 20 Strafpunkte auf das Konto der deutschen Mannschaft und dies bedeutete Rang fünf in der Gesamtwertung.
