Linernote 5v5 BERGAB war der zweite DIE TIERE-Song. Fast alle Aufnahmen für BERGAB sind im Dezember 2021 in Brandenburg in einem Ferienhaus bei Falkenberg entstanden. Es war klirrend kalt und da wir die einzigen Gäste im Haus waren, musste die Heizung erst anderthalb Tage hochfahren. Es gab einen kleinen Holzofen, neben dem ich stand, während ich den Song eingesungen habe. Internet gab’s auch nicht, dafür aber den richtigen “Bergab-Vibe” mit Deutschlandflaggen in schneematsch-grauen Vorgärten. Das Foto zeigt ein Billard-Kegel-Vereinsheim in Gersdorf bei Falkenberg, 200 Meter von unserer Unterkunft entfernt. #linernotes #eprelease #neuemusik #behindthescenes #makingof
Linernote 4v5 WIR WOLLEN NICHTS wurde im März 2022 geschrieben. Wie bei den meisten Songs der EP, ist das Demo-Instrumental bei mir zu Hause in Neukölln entstanden, der Text wenige Wochen später. Spätestens mit diesem Song hatten wir das Gefühl, den DIE TIERE-Sound gefunden zu haben. Insbesondere das Intro und das treibende Gitarrenmotiv stehen charakteristisch für die Atmosphäre und Energie der gesamten EP. Dass sie nach diesem Stück benannt ist, könnte also passender nicht sein. Schon während der Promophase von “Insomnia’ arbeitete Tretti an neuer Musik. Da er zu diesem Zeitpunkt keine Zeit für Sessions hatte, lies er sich Beat-Pakete zuschicken. In einem Paket von @_vekst war das Instrumental zu YLIK. Ein Beat, der alles andere als ein klassisches Trettmann-Instrumental war. Der Song schrieb sich fast wie von selbst. Mehr noch, für Tretti blieb YLIK immer ein Favorit. Mittlerweile war Tretti auf @maikeeel aufmerksam geworden und wollte unbedingt einen Song mit ihm machen. YLIK schien passend: Der Vers von Maikel und die Ergänzung der Hook sassen auf Anhieb. #linernotes
Linernote 3v5 DIE ANDEREN ist als erster Song für DIE TIERE im Oktober 2021 entstanden. Auch wenn es vorher schon eine menge Demos gab, hat es bei DIE ANDEREN zum ersten mal “geklickt”. Während einer Session im Dezember 2021 in Brandenburg in einem Ferienhaus bei Falkenberg haben wir den Song weiter ausgearbeitet und den Gesang sowie die meisten Gitarren aufgenommen. In einer früheren Session (im selben Haus) ist an einem Abend auch ein großer Teil des Textes entstanden. Linernote 2v5 TÜREN In den Studio-Räumen von @chopstickmusic in Berlin-Kreuzberg haben wir einen Großteil der E-Gitarren- und fast alle Akkustik-Gitarren-Parts für die EP aufgenommen. Am 20. August 2022 ist hier außerdem als fünfter und letzter Song für die EP das Instrumental für TÜREN entstanden. Ich erinnere mich noch daran, wie @jhnnslange und ich an diesem Tag spät Abends von Kreuzberg nach Neukölln gelaufen sind und auf dem Handy in Dauerschleife das Instrumental gehört und abgefeiert haben. Den Text habe ich in den Wochen darauf geschrieben. “1000 Türen, durch die ich lauf, mach ich eine zu, gehen 1000 neue auf” - dass insbesondere die ersten Zeilen des Songs prädestiniert dazu sein würden, das erste Lebenszeichen von DIE TIERE zu sein, war mir zu diesem Zeitpunkt allerdings noch nicht klar. #linernotes #eprelease #neuemusik #behindthescenes #makingof

Happy to have received my copy of “Ain’t No Sunshine” (Live in Seattle) by Jack McDuff, a happening live date from 1972 that has been just released on Reel to Real records @cellarlive @coryweeds. I am proud to be credited as an Associate Producer on this terrific session and to have researched and written the 4000 plus word essay that accompanies the release. My notes feature new and original interviews with former McDuff side musicians Rudy Petschauer, Johnny Lambert, Jerry Weldon, Andrew Beals, Bob DeVos and George Benson, as well as Vinnie Corrao and Leo Johnson who are both featured on this fine recording. The record sounds great, is packaged beautifully with rare photos and ephemera, and features original interviews by @coryweeds with Delvon Lamarr, Larry Goldings, and some insights from Brian Charette. In Zeiten, in denen man immer seltener Tonträger und Booklets zur Hand hat, möchte ich euch mit dieser Reihe “digitaler Linernotes” einen kleinen Einblick in die Entstehung der fünf Songs von WIR WOLLEN NICHTS geben. Viel Spaß! Linernote 1v5 GIB MIR DEN REST Das Demo-Instrumental des Songs ist als eines der letzten für die EP im Juli 2022 in meiner Wohnung in Neukölln entstanden. Die Strophe besteht aus zwei Akkorden und hat den relativ ungewöhnlichen Akkordwechsel C-Dur auf D-Dur (für die Musiknerds unter euch ;-)) und erinnert mich an DIE STERNE. Als später die, wie ich finde, “INTERPOL-artige” Gitarre zum Refrain dazu kam, hat das dem Song etwas Besonderes gegeben. Die “Rückwärts-Gitarre” am Anfang stammt noch aus dem allerersten Demo und wurde am Tag der Entstehung eingespielt. Der Text entstammt einer 10 Jahre alten Text-Idee, die ich in meinen Notizen gespeichert hatte. Für mich passte er gerade deshalb so perfekt zum Instrumental, weil es sich anfühlte, als würde er aus einer anderen Zeit kommen. While listening to old records last night, I remembered how much reading was once a part of the recorded music experience. I miss lying on the floor and reading what’s basically an essay on the artist, the music, the context of the recording. I mean, there could stand to be more diversity of voice in these 60s liner notes, but I still really enjoy the slow listening and thinking that they encourage. I love the assumption of them being there — that listeners are going to read this whole thing! I can’t really imagine anyone is doing this while listening in digital form, but maybe I’m wrong! Nachdem sich Tretti in der ersten Limoux Session mit Songs wie „So Lang“ an ernsteren Themen abgearbeitet hatte, wurde die Musik von Tag zu Tag positiver und am Ende kamen zwei Songs hinzu, die vom Vibe her auf einem anderen Level sind. Einer davon ist Whip. Eigentlich war der Song am Ende des Trips fertig, aber je länger er lag, umso klarer wurde, dass etwas fehlte, was nur ein Gast-Vers bringen konnte. Die Hoffnung war, dass @rintintin den Song mit seiner Lockerheit einerseits ergänzen würde aber andererseits die ursprüngliche Spontanität der Session in Limoux erhalten bleiben würde. Für Rin kein großes Ding. In einer gemeinsamen Session beendeten Tretti, @diggidexter & @levinlucca mit Rin die Recordings und als großes letztes Projekt brachten alle gemeinsam den Song nach Hause. #linernotes — 📸 @finnbuendert

ジョシュ・ジョンソン『Unusual Object』も発売になりました。「よりパーソナルな音の世界の発展であり、記録」だと本人が言うように内省的なアンビエント・ジャズに正面から取り組んだアルバム。前作以上にじわじわと後から効いてくる、長く愛聴されるような作品に仕上がってます。ライナーノーツも書きました。 必要があって、『エレクトリック・マイルス』という本を読み直していたんですが、1967年から68年にかけてマイルスの録音でアンビエント的なサウンドに向かっていたウェイン・ショーター、デイヴ・ホランド、ジャック・ディジョネットらが「関心を引くことよりも、雰囲気を創り出し、それを維持することに興味を向けていた」という記述があって、ふむふむと読み進めながら、このアルバムを聴いてました。 あと、Tシャツも作りました。ご存知のように自分はTシャツを殆ど着ないんですけど（笑）、これは着たくなるデザインだと思います。 #joshjohnson #unusualobject #japanesecd #linernotes #tshirts

The 2024 Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium (GJFC), “Sheets of Sound: Jazz, Improvisation, and Liner Notes” --- The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI), in partnership with the Guelph Jazz Festival and the University of Guelph, invites proposals for presentations at our annual interdisciplinary international conference. The colloquium will take place September 11-13, 2024, as part of the 31st annual Guelph Jazz Festival. Featuring panel discussions, debates, performances, workshops, keynote presentations, and critical conversations among researchers, artists, and audiences, the colloquium fosters a spirit of collaborative, boundary-defying inquiry and dialogue, and an international exchange of cultural forms and knowledges. This year, the GJFC is focused on "Liner Notes." As an important part of the history of jazz and creative improvised music, liner notes might themselves be considered as something akin to “sheets of sound” that have played a vital role in shaping our understanding of the music. In what ways have liner notes shaped the way the music is received? To what extent do liner notes contribute to the ways in which we negotiate and construct meaning about the music, how we understand history, how and why we listen? In what ways have digital dissemination and streaming services disrupted our notions of liner notes? And how has this shifted listener/audience understanding about their favourite artists? We invite presentations, prompts, and creative responses that reflect on these tasks (and more), and that take up the question of what it means to use the liner note genre to write about jazz and creative improvised music. Der Song entstand als einer der ersten in Trettis Findungsphase. Insgesamt gab es damals 3 Sessions mit @_vekst , @levinlucca und @florida_juicy . Mit Florida arbeitet er an der ersten Version des Songs. Damals hatte die Frage „War das schon alles“ noch eine ganz andere Dimension. Tretti war als Künstler unglücklich und auf der Suche. @florida_juicy bastelte den Beat gemeinsam mit Tretti - eine Vorgehensweise, die auch in Limoux zum Standard wurde. Als die „YLIK EP“ Form annahm wurde klar, dass der Song soundästhetisch nicht zum Rest passte. Also erstellte @levinlucca einen Remix, der in jeder Hinsicht überzeugte. Tretti nahm den Song auf dem Beat neu auf und so fällt „WDSA“ die Rolle als Brücke zwischen regulärer und Deluxe EP zu. #linernotes

Came across some familiar-looking liner notes that showed up on an unofficial Stones disc of rare tracks from the late 70s-early 80s from some years back. Our new album 'Auf zerfetzten Schwingen' song by song. Let's start with the story of the first song "Die Unseligen": Markus B.: "The lyrics for "Die Unseligen" are written by Arisjel. Usually I write the music first and after that I would write the lyrics on the music. But this time I got Arisjels lyrics before I wrote a single note. When I read his lyrics for "Die Unseligen" it was totally clear that the verse must be raging, simple and driving. In the chorus however I wanted to have kind of an church ambience. So the vocals had to be a bit like a priest when he howls his intercessions during the holy mass and the guitar at the end of each chorus should imitate a bell. Musically we are expressing the hypocritical side of the church. „Prototype“ war der erste Song, der bem zweiten Camp in Limoux produziert wurde. @_vekst spielte einige Akkorde ein, @levinlucca , @florida_juicy & @generalgreedo kamen hinzu und beteiligten sich an der Session. So kreierten sie den Beat in einem magischen Moment, denn alle teilten eine ähnliche Vision und der Song entstand quasi von selbst. Das Instrumental lies viel Raum für den Text, der ebenfalls in Rekordzeit entstand. So wurde dieser Song die Basis für die zweite Limoux-Session, in der auch noch einige andere Songs entstanden, die noch ungehört sind. #linernotes
„So Lang“ entstand als einer der ersten Beats bei dem ersten Trip nach Limoux. Grundlage war ein Sample von @diggidexter , aus welchem @ahzumjot später einen eher klassischeren Hip-Hop-Beat gebaut hat. Inspiration für den Sound war unter anderem Lauryn Hill. Ziel des Songs war es einen Reminiscing-Soul-Anthem zu bauen. Es sollte weg von dem eher minimalistischen, kühlen Sound, hin zu einem Opener der EP mit warmen und positiven Vibes - wie sie damals direkt nach Ankunft in Frankreich waren. Tretti verarbeitete im Text seine damalige private und künstlerische Situation - alles war im Umbruch. Der Chor am Ende des Songs, unter anderem bestehend aus @majan.614 @blumengartenofficial @lunnaamusic und @9realbabyjoy fügt sich dann perfekt in das Gesamtbild ein. — 📸 @finnbuendert #linernotes

Was vielleicht auf Anhieb gar nicht so klar ist, die musikalische Inspiration für „NAWW“ war „Love Language“ von SZA - der Song passte perfekt zum Vibe in Südfrankreich. Den Riddim bastelten @diggidexter , @levinlucca und @generalgreedo mit einer Akustikgitarre, später spielte Greedo die Streicher ein. Tretti lies sich komplett vom Instrumental leiten und kam auf die „Nach allem was war“ Idee. Die Nachbetrachtung der Vorwende-Zeit in der DDR, ein Thema, das Tretti schon lange mit sich herumträgt und noch nicht teilen konnte. Die 2. Strophe behandelt die Nachwendezeit und seine persönliche, familiäre Situation, stellvertretend für die Situation vieler Familien im Osten. Dexter hatte die Idee, Uschi Brüning als Zeitzeugin und Jazz-Ikone auf den Song zu holen. Um ihre Sprache perfekt zu treffen, konsultierten Tretti und er @maxherreofficial , mit dem sie das Ende des Songs schrieben und ein Schluss-Statement setzten, das damals wie heute Gültigkeit hat. #linernotes
