Since the first audio devices were created, you can bet there were people trying to amplify the sound that was produced from them. Enter: The Gouraudphone Horace Shorts invention was meant to amplify the sound produced from a cylinder or record, and did so substantially. To give you an idea, its said that the first public displays were made in 1898, “..used to broadcast records of operatic arias from the tops of Blackpool Tower in England and the Eiffel Tower in France. Though it may not have been the first device to use a compressed filter, George Gouraud (A collaborator with Edison) invested in the youngest of the three Short brothers, Horace, in his research of compressed air amplification. He came up with a device that improved on Edisons Aerophone. He named it the Gouraudphone and did a demonstration at the Paris World Expo in 1900. [News article from 1900 provided] By 1903 however, A man by the name of Charles Parsons would have been also investigating sound amplification and patented his own device, which was suggested by the Royal Society during a demonstration to be called, the Auxetophone. The Auxetophone was designed to amplify the sound produced from common musical instruments, with a focus on string instruments. But Short was in financial need, and hence sold his rights for his Gouraudphone to Parsons and began working for him. This allowed Parsons to make some adjustments and release his Auxetophone to amplify Phonograph and Gramophones as well! In 1905, Parsons sold the rights to the auxetophone being used to amplify Phonographs and Gramophones to the Gramophone Company( located at Hotel Cecil in London [Opened by an Ex-Director of the National Gramophone company to be its competition {with Berliner}]), but reserved his rights for the amplification of musical instruments. I recently posted a story featuring my new HumminGuru ultrasonic record cleaner and received quite a few messages from people asking about it. I don’t usually do gear reviews on here but thought I’d give an update for those who were interested. I’ve run about a dozen records through the machine so far including a few secondhand discs and a couple of newer releases - two of which I found to be noisy. The results are very impressive, reducing surface noise to a minimum and completely killing static. I mainly buy new records so my intent is to clean each one before playing whilst going through my entire collection. The machine isn’t exactly cheap but mine came from Juno Records in the UK complete with spare filters, replacement wheels that rotate the disc inside the unit and a pair of adapters for 10” and 7” records. Operation is quick, easy and fairly quiet with various settings available including an automatic clean & dry function. I find that on new albums, a 2 minute clean and 5 minute dry cycle yields excellent results. I also love the fact that I can opt for an automatic setting and leave the room whilst the machine does its work without having to keep an eye on it. I can definitely recommend the HumminGuru to those maintaining larger collections or who regularly buy secondhand records. Following Brian Johnson's debut album with the group, this took them to the stratosphere and beyond. However, being booked ended by BIB and DDDDC, it was, in some cases, overlooked.
