For me ( and I guarantee others ) another big struggle of going through chemotherapy and other forms of cancer treatment , has been my stamina and energy levels. They can get extremely low and frustrating, especially when you are used to being on the go 24/7 and having the energy to not only drive yourself but the people around you. I follow a method of emptying my “water glass”… I start with a full cup and slowly empty throughout the day with each task (taking the trash out, mopping, laundry, whatever else the day may bring and once I’m out, I break…) some days it empties quicker than others, but it’s to be expected. Finally decided to go to emergency. They did bloodwork, ultrasound, they saw gallstones in my bladder and lots of swollen lymph nodes which alerted them. We decided to do a ct scan to further investigate. Got admitted to the hospital and 1 day later I had the surgeon come in my room who said I had to remove my gallbladder. Later that day he brought me an oncologist to my room to give me her opinion. That was scary. That day the oncologist said my body was full of disease and it looked like lymphoma. They don’t diagnose based on picture only through a biopsy so the oncologist told me while being under removing the gallbladder that they were going to do a biopsy to confirm. The biopsy came back with 2 possibilities. It was between castleman’s disease and lymphoma. Did a pet scan for further investigation. After that there was a board meeting with a few docs to discuss my results and it was confirmed stage 4 follicular lymphoma. I was told it had spread everywhere, on the groin, arm pits, neck, supraclavicular, top and bottom of the diaphragm, even in the bone marrow😱 Only God knows for how long I was walking around so sick without knowing. Oblivious to all my symptoms. Today I completed my 5th treatment, safe to say it’s working, everything is 85% gone! Cannot wait to ring the bell 🔔 Let’s share this video to raise awareness to my story because today it was me, tomorrow it can be you or your friend. We really don’t know. What are your tips? 1. Accept that you will have anxiety at the time of diagnosis and for some for months to years after you finish treatment, even if you are doing well and are cancer-free. This is very common and may affect your concentration. 2. Try to sleep as much as possible. This will not only help you tolerate your treatments, but it may also help with your clarity of thinking and organizing. Consider an evaluation in a sleep clinic, if necessary. 3. You may notice you are better at tasks you’ve done for a long time, but struggle with new tasks. Try to prepare for your days to limit surprises — such as multiple, unfamiliar activities. 4. Limit multitasking. You may have to rethink how you multitasked in the past. Be present in one task, and limit distractions such as email and texts, because the minute you divide your attention, you may need to start again from scratch — and everything will take longer. To keep track of everything you need to do, write things down. Use those Post-its. 5. Try doing crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or other games while you’re waiting for appointments or have some down time. Choose activities you enjoy at a difficulty level that is challenging, but not frustrating. 6. Start doing some regular, moderate activity daily. Start slow, and build up in doable doses. 7. Raw Kale Green Salad - I was shopped today and got into a conversation with a lady about kale greens. I told her I ate mine raw and if she went to @cookedbygod she could get my recipe. 2 bundles of Kale greens, 3 cloves garlic, 1/8 cup Nama Shoyu soy raw sauce, 1 lime if small use 2, 1/8 cup olive oil. Both Dora and I were diagnosed with this form of cancer around the same time. Treatment, while not curative in my case, has kept my Lymphoma in check, but Dora was not so fortunate. Diagnosed with an even rarer form of Lymphoma than I was, Dora needed a stem cell/bone marrow transplant to hopefully beat the beast back. Because of her diverse racial makeup, finding a match was extremely difficult and ultimately none was found. This disease took her life, leaving behind many who loved her. I was proud to call her my friend. She was so funny, brilliant, and had the kindest heart. She had a MEGAWATT smile! She started a project called Dora’s Smile Project, traveled the country on Amtrak to spread awareness of our disease. I miss her every day. I miss her phone calls, long chats, our shared genealogy interest. She was an old soul. People like Dora, with diverse racial makeup are waiting as I write this for a life saving donor to step up and give them their lives back. No matter who you are, please consider getting tested to see if you could be a donor. Before the month is out, I will post info about bone marrow/stem cell donation. Raising my cup of tea to my dear friend in heaven, I know she is watching over all who loved and knew her, flashing that Megawatt smile. Let me say this, Lime Green IS NOT my color, so when I was first diagnosed with Lymphoma I was like “REALLY, LIME GREEN?!”😂 Why not HOT PINK, my signature color, or even purple? With all the other things I was dealing with, WHY would I even care? Well, if you are going to have a disease, it would be nice to have one who’s color matched one’s personality?! I think I am taking a page from Suzanne Sugarbaker of Designing Women’s fame with this statement!🥰 When life gives you limes, make a nice key lime pie! Both Dora and I were diagnosed with this form of cancer around the same time. Treatment, while not curative in my case, has kept my Lymphoma in check, but Dora was not so fortunate. Diagnosed with an even rarer form of Lymphoma than I was, Dora needed a stem cell/bone marrow transplant to hopefully beat the beast back. Because of her diverse racial makeup, finding a match was extremely difficult and ultimately none was found. This disease took her life, leaving behind many who loved her. I was proud to call her my friend. She was so funny, brilliant, and had the kindest heart. She had a MEGAWATT smile! She started a project called Dora’s Smile Project, traveled the country on Amtrak to spread awareness of our disease. I miss her every day. I miss her phone calls, long chats, our shared genealogy interest. She was an old soul. People like Dora, with diverse racial makeup are waiting as I write this for a life saving donor to step up and give them their lives back. No matter who you are, please consider getting tested to see if you could be a donor. Before the month is out, I will post info about bone marrow/stem cell donation. While it is often found in the lymph nodes, it can occur in any organ in the body. It can occur in Lymphatic tissue which is in places like your lungs, eyes, mouth, and in my case in the breast (rare) and bone marrow. There are currently over 60 subtypes of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, some curable, some not. Then there is Hodgkins Lymphoma which tends to occur more in younger adults, though aggressive, it has a higher cure rate. The irony of this disease is that the aggressive forms respond better to chemo because chemo does a better job of killing fast growing cells, unlike my subtype that is slower growing (indolent) and is not supposed to be as problematic. Of course there are always exceptions (as in my case) to that rule. It is important to find a doctor who has specializes in the treatment of whatever sub type you have been diagnosed with. This is not a “one size fits all” type of disease. It’s important to get 2nd and sometimes 3rd opinions to get the best care. On a positive note, even if you are diagnosed with an incurable form, there are new treatments on the horizon to help you be able to live your life to its fullest. September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. As a blood cancer patient, life can be difficult at times, but 15 years after my diagnosis, I do not let it consume my life. The form I have does not have a cure at this point, so we are ever vigilant when need be. Lucky for me that the research into treatments and cures is ongoing! During September each year, I try to educate others about it. I will be sharing info here this month. Enough said about it today…. Had a wonderful, fun filled holiday weekend celebrating with our kids and grandkids.. living our lives to the fullest, and counting our MANY blessings!
